Some modern art is okay (Alexander Calder’s mobiles are pretty neat, and I’ve seen some brilliant abstract sculptures with a high degree of craftsmanship)
But a heck of a lot of modern art stands only on excellent salesmanship, promotion, and a lot of big fancy words to justify it. 30-50 years from now, history may take a kinder view, but in my eyes, not even a sweet little Poad can redeem it.

December 24, 2009 at 12:41 am #790950Rusti, are you sure what you mean isn’t ‘contemporary’ … meaning created in recent history? e.g. all the art being created today, right now, is contemporary, simply because of the creation date. 🙂 Unless looking at it from a museum point of view, which means most any art created after WWII. Confusingly, ‘Modern Art” refers less to the fact that it is being created in modern times and more to the fact that it was an art movement a few decades ago.
Art classification is very complicated and sticky and I don’t like to play much with it because it stains my fingers blue… XD
The only constant I know is that with any art, there will always be those that like it, and those that do not!

Both Seurat and Matisse ended up in my ‘Modern Art” history book, which also contained references to Dadaism, Cubism, Surrealism, and towards the end, Manga/anime, believe it or not. The modern art ‘class’ I had covered up to World War I, or therebouts and then ended.
Classifying art *is* a sticky subject, no argument there! Somedays I think Bosch needed to be born a few centuries later so he could have been part of the Surrealism movement, but as it is, he shows up in Renaissance classes.
I don’t claim to be an expert, though. I took 18 hours of Art History (only about 6 of which were my choice, I thought ‘why not?’) to get the minor to go with my graphic design degree. The minor is about as useless as my retention!

She didn’t sell for very much, though.
December 28, 2009 at 7:03 am #790956No she didn’t, kinda surprising. I was willing to put down more for her.
Oh well, I won’t complain about a bargain. :3

December 29, 2009 at 5:26 am #790962Nice Poad!
Nice griffy, too… but I don’t like the red eyes for some reason.

Congrats on the good fortune of catching him at a nice price (good for the buyer at least, not as much for windstone).
Oh… that dragonleaf poad is REALLY nice! I hope more will appear (but not necessarily all this month!
