Boy isn’t that the truth. A friend of mine has an interesting way to deal with not using her credit card. She put the actual card in some water and then put the water in her freezer. That way the card is still there for emergencies, but in order to use it she has to defrost it making her less likely to use it for a “frivolous” emergency instead of a real one.

lol Buying Windstones isn’t an “emergency”.

Credit cards aren’t evil incarnate if used properly. I fell on hard times at one point about 13 years ago and had to have one of my cats put to sleep because of financial difficulties. It haunts me like a sin. It will never happen again.

Poor kitty baby 🙁 Hopefully she’ll recover and not have any long term effects; but I know what you mean about wanting to end her suffering. Hard choices and decisions. Hang in there *Hugs for kitty and for you*

Poor doggy. Could always be worse…for instance…

Today I came home and my husband tells me he thinks something is wrong with one of our barn cats.

Yep, the lid he had on the antifreeze left over from cleaning his radiator had come off and she was looking for water and must have drank it. She has all the classic symptoms for antifreeze poisoning.

At this point there is little I can do, so I have her in my back bathroom with water and a blanket and am going to have to just make her as comfortable as I can. I can’t afford to take her to the vet, and they aren’t open on the weekends, and the chances of saving her are slim to none, all he could do is put her down. If she is still with us on Monday, I will take her to the vet so she doesn’t have to suffer more than she needs to.

I feel really bad, and hubby is really sorry, he thought the lid was secure. I wish I had some euthasol so I could put her down myself, but the darn drug is very controlled, with good reason, but still it would help to be able to do something to help her now, without breaking the bank.

Poor kitty, she is so sick all I can do is hold her and love on her and wish it was over.

Ohhh, I am sooo sorry! That is a horrible way to die. I started making my husband get the pet safe antifreeze, because we have so many vehicles and animals. I will keep you and your kitty in my thoughts and pray she doesn’t suffer.

Hugs! Again, I am sorry! It would be better if you had access to humane euthanasia at this point! I will be thinking about you!

I really hope there will be something they can do for your cat. I HATE to see animals suffer but I also HATE to see them put to sleep. Good luck

Considering that she is likely to go into kidney failure, and probably already is, it is kindest to put her to sleep. There is little to nothing they can do for cats with regards to antifreeze poisoning unless you can catch it in the first hour, and I have no idea just when she drank it, could have been anytime in the last 12 hours.

I love her, and will be sorry to see her go, but there is no hope, except to hope I can get her to the vet before she begins to suffer so he can put her out of it.

It sucks, but it is all I can do.

I’d be more upset if this were Zinc, he’s my baby, and when he passes on I am not going to take it well.

But Mama isn’t really a love cat, she’s always been standoffish and sometimes hostile, she’s a good mouser, that’s about it. So while I am sad this happened, I am very grateful it wasn’t one of my more loving and affectionate cats.

She came close to getting destroyed a few years ago when she attacked my son’s then 18 month old cousin in an attack on the dog. She scratched and bit up the dog and then tore up the kid on the way out the door, she nearly got put to sleep then. So really she’s been lucky, she’s lived another 4 years since then.

I know I sound kinda cold, I’m really not, I’m resigned, I know there isn’t much to be done, so I’m trying to distance myself from her emotionally. It’s hard to lose a pet, especially when it’s technically your fault, I should have double checked that bucket.

This is the first time ever I have lost a pet to something other than old age or something unforeseeable, like cancer or colic. This time it was the fault of her humans, we failed her.

Anyway, sorry to have stolen your thread Keschete.

Sometimes they treat antifreeze poisoning with, I kid you not, IV everclear. It’s a hit or miss treatment and it’s only worth trying within 12 hours of poisoning. Antifreeze is sweet-tasting and unfortunately animals love it.

After 12 hours, even the drug they have that they use in dogs won’t work. Crystals are forming in the kidney’s by then and what essentially happens is the kidney’s turn to mush.

I’m really sorry about your kitty, Kyrin.

And Kaya? Join the ranks of vet techs who have brought their animals in to their veterinarian coworkers and watched their vets’ stumped faces. It’s like a twisted game.

Yeah, I looked up all the possibles and the prognosis for cats was very poor even in the best of circumstances, and it just isn’t practical to spend hundreds on her if there is little to no hope of recovery. Best thing is to end it as quickly as we can so she doesn’t suffer more than she has to. But I sure wish hubby had made sure that bucket lid was on solid!

He thought he had, and he’s apologized a million times, but the thing is, you can’t take this sort of thing back. I made sure the lid is on tight, and he’s getting rid of it asap.

I’ve always been paranoid about antifreeze, and usually hubby is much more careful, so I’m a little disappointed in him at this point, he knew with everything freezing and water being harder for the outdoor cats to get that he really had to make sure this was secure. But he’s not alone in the blame, I noticed the lid was loose earlier this week and didn’t slam it down, I really didn’t think they’d try to get at it, stupid me.

I really don’t think it’s anyone’s fault. Accidents happen, even the horrible ones, so don’t beat yourself up too badly. Even if she had water, if she had access to the antifreeze, she would drink it. They just like it that much.

It’s a hard lesson learned, but nobody’s fault.

yeah, I know, but still. Now I am worried about the other cats, I’ve only seen two of the other outdoor cats, and they appear to be okay, but I haven’t seen the other two. Since they are Mama’s kittens, grown but still hers, I wonder if they got into it too.

Smudge and Avalanche appear to be okay, no wobblies or signs at all, but tomorrow I am going to have to see if I can find Chiger and Hazel, it will be very upsetting if we’ve managed to poison more than one cat.

I hope, but of all my cats, I would have to say that Mama, Chiger and Hazel are the dimmest of the bunch when it comes to intelligence, sadly.

                    Sorry about your doggy Keshete.

Kyrin, I knew a dog once that drank anti freeze. It was a neighbors dog. She was nasty and had dogs all over the yard and never took care of them. The dog was either fed antifreeze by a neighbor or got into its owners drug stash. The poor thing was disoriented and sick and stumbling…totally out of it. I thought it was gonna die, but this puppy pulled thru. Maybe your kitty can, too. I hope so.

I did look up the everclearthing because alcohol into the blood can kill people so I imagine that would be tricky treatment. One responder did say they just put some everclear down the cats throat and thats how they treated it. I suppose you may not want to try that, though… might make him even more miserable. So sorry about your kitty.

sorry about your kitty too kyrin….i’m a big animal planet fan and i watch shows like emergency vets and to treat dogs they’ll put a tube down the dogs throat into the stomach and give them charcoal to induce vomiting if it’s in a short time after the initial drinking of the antifreeze. Apparently the charcoal absorbs most of that stuff…yuk. I’m not sure if that will work on a kitty though…
there was a thing on the news a few years back saying that somebody was throwing bags of pet food over fences drenched in antifreeze killing lots of pets, but i heard that the majority were saved using the charcoal method. ask your vet about that…maybe they could try? good luck.

My most wanted list: Peacock kitty wizard, carnelian mouse wizard, copper patina frog wizard, autumn leaf poads, pumpkin spice kitties

It’s too late, it only works if you can get the cat treatment within the first 2 or 3 hours, when I found her her symptoms were well along, so we’d already missed that window. All we can do now is keep her comfortable as possible and take her to the vet tomorrow so he can end it humanely.

I am just hoping she is the only one who was stupid enough to drink it, at this point I am in fear that she is only one of three, but I can’t find the other two.
