Wow,if you can see it,you’re too close.Glad it was in the distance.
I honestly have no idea how far away it was. It could have been very close. My friend and I were on our balcony on the cruise ship having a snack when she noticed it forming. The boat just kept on moving away from the island we were leaving, so clearly it didn’t pose us any harm (plus, waterspouts are notoriously weak), so we grabbed our cameras and clicked away. We didn’t come across anyone else who noticed it even though it was visible for over probably 15 minutes. It was raining a tiny bit, though, so I suppose people were below decks.
January 25, 2012 at 9:02 pm #870797What a neat lightning shot, bodine! WOW! 🙂
January 29, 2012 at 7:27 pm #871671You don’t need a super fancy camera to catch lighting, it just needs to have a manual setting ability 🙂 – You set the settings a certain way, tripod the camera and take long exposures 🙂
If you look at the treeline on your whirlwind lightning (Congrats on catching a bolt by hand, I tried that for years and never had any success! lol) – what happened was the cameras natural settings made it a longer exposure, so your movement was recorded. – Long exposures = The shutter stays open longer, and captures all of the light that comes through in that time and combines it into one image. – Ever take a photo indoors and have it get all blurry? That’s why!
But when the camera is on a tripod, it isn’t moving, and so long as your subject isn’t moving, you’ll get a nice crisp photo! 🙂Here are a couple of my faves from this last summer.
They’re photographed with my Sony a55 and I did study quite a bit on how to do them (And I found myself with a lot of trial and error shots!) – Point and shoots are fully capable of doing this! (I have some beautiful shots from my P&S camera of lightning, ‘n I relied on it for many years. Honest truth is, they can and do compete with basic DSLR cameras without the price tags!
A big trick is gettin them while they’re not right on top of you (When a storm is above you its difficult to know which way to point the camera! When it’s closer, but not right over you, you know which way to point the camera! 😉 lol) and standing in a full on lightning storm with your camera isn’t for the faint of heart… I get a rush off it, some may find it unsafe ;p hahaha.***There are links below each image to see the whole photo***
I need to work on color adjusting this one again (I had my white balance off, it’s been a work in progress to get the white balance where I wanted it since, lol)
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a153/XRavensIceX/ChasingDreams.jpgThese are taken once I started gettin an idea of what I was doing XD They remain some of the most exciting images I’ve created, in my personal opinion… I actually had hopes for a photographing a completely different storm than this (opposite direction, lol) I was disappointed to see it die off before it got close enough to properly photograph (and before it got dark enough to photograph easily. I’m still no good with day lightning, lol) I turned around ready to throw in the towel when I saw this one building in the distance behind me! and with Sunset colors *heart*! I spent the next 2 n a half hours standing in the middle of my country road photographing this storm. – So-worth-it! The early photos turned out to be the better of the batch, can’t beat the hints of orange!

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a153/XRavensIceX/BrightNightII.jpgand yes. Those white dots *are* stars 🙂
I can’t wait for spring/summer.. more storms to chase down! 🙂 My family and bf laugh at me, I hear the slightest rumble and I’m a two yr old in a toy store! Going to the window, watching for where it came from, debating on jumping in my truck and running it down… I’m also prone to haunting the weather reports XD
January 29, 2012 at 8:07 pm #871679Thank you KaytanaPhoenix.I have a dinosaur camera at the moment but when I upgrade I will definetly contact you.I don’t know much about it except for pointing and snapping.I did catch a very cool shot of lightning one time by standing out in the yard during a lightning storm but I got it! Problem is,when I transferred it to my old desk top and then transferred it to this laptop, the file is strange.I can open it and see them but when I try to share ,they cannot.Any help with that? The lightning was so hot it is a twister.Cool shot really.I would love to share it,help? Thanks.
Okay,I poked around and figured it out! This is one of four but the best one.Caught with a little $100 digital camera.Love lightning!
That is a great shot. WOW

You have a great talent for the shot. That first image is beautiful Kay.
Brilliant imagesJanuary 30, 2012 at 12:16 am #871713Thanks Branz! That storm sure did make me work for it! Chased it 15-20miles before gettin a good line up on it, then stood in a mosquito ridden field for 3hrs… I felt that one for Weeks, lol.
I have fun w it, in the summer it really is what I live for 🙂
If anyone wants to learn how to do night sPOhots, I’ll be happy to help where I can, they really are amazing. n it doesn’t require the hrs upon hrs dedication, I just can’t walk away until I know what I’m photographing has nothing left to give, it’s in my blood, lolJanuary 30, 2012 at 3:15 pm #871765VERY cool shots, Kaytana!

I don’t have much for lightning shots with me right now.. I don’t think, anyway, I’ll have to look on my external HDD, but next time I’m back to my pc I will pick out some more (and other weather photos) — I should start my own photography thread.. I’ve been dying to share photos with people, but I’ve got someone people in the Colorado Nature Photography community that would love to see me go down (Short of the long. I called out lies and it didn’t go over well XD lol) so I’ve been honing my skills and let the dust settle before I post any in that circle..Windy days will make me sleepy! and cold.. just hearing the wind ‘n I’ll be cold, lol..
I’m not a diehard storm chaser, not yet anyway.. I’m going to be researching meteorology some though, so I have a better idea of when to expect the weather, how it’s going to behave and best yet.. when a good time to leave is (Colorado plains, known to get their tornados and/or large hail, lol) at the moment I’ll chase existing thunder storms to a point.. I want to find a storm chasing crew that isn’t too far from where I live to see if maybe I can ride with them.. having more than myself to watch the roads and watch the sky might help some ;p and someone to watch the sky on really wild storms while I photograph is also good.. no hide and seek with a tornado! lol. Yeah.. I’m kinda weird 🙂
