I don’t paint PYOs (I just read about it) but I think that people recommend clear coating the piece and then doing the antiquing. That makes it easier to control the amount of antiquing? Then, I suppose, you clear coat it again when you are happy with the antiquing.
etruscan is exactly right! Once you are ready to antique, I would recommend putting 1 layer of a topcoat on it, then letting it dry completely (Give it about 3 or 4 hours before handling it), then antiquing and finishing off with another 1-2 layers of topcoat. The first layer of topcoating helps to solidify the paint job that you already have on there, so that when you are antiquing (which involves painting a color into the crevices and then wiping the paint away) you don’t rub away any of the paint underneath!

Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!July 12, 2011 at 8:43 pm #850852And I have never antiqued before soo very nervous about messing it up lol…so any pointers there are welcome as well! 🙂
Im still a beginner PYO painter, but what I do when Im antiqueing is use acrylic retarder to thin the paint, as well as some cheap blending gel. It gets the paint very thin, and because of the retarder, it will take longer to dry-so if you paint your piece with an antiqueing color you dont like, its easy to wipe it off. Just be VERY CAREFUL when wiping! I use a paper towel-something less absorbant, so it doesnt bring the under colors with it.
Also, if I were you, I’d mix in a darker reddish brown into her fur in parts-like the center of her leg, and down her spine. That will give her some depth. Same with the wings. You might try taking the same color you mixed to get her fur color and adding a tiny bit of a darker color and painting above the marks on her wings so it will look like the marks are fading down from dark to light.

It’s my guess that of all the windstones you ever get, this one will be the most special to you.

July 17, 2011 at 12:57 am #851269Thank you everyone! 🙂 I am very pleased that she came out so cute! I think Tundra would be proud of me. The pretty mat she is sitting on is the one i crocheted her that her urn sits on, I just borrowed it for the pictures, I knew it would have looked beautiful on her with those eyes.
