After putting on the clear coat (and waiting a few days for it to really, really dry), I antique mixing 1/3 paint, 1/3 water and 1/3 antiquing medium (I buy mine at Michaels). It helps removing the excess, especially once it’s a bit dry; you just use a humid sponge/paper towel/etc. With paint and water only, I think I’d find it harder to remove.
