Hah, numbers always have colors for me too! It’s a little weird when reading numbers that are printed in color and they aren’t the “right” color for that number. Words sometimes take on color too though I notice it less.

I remember reading once that synaesthetes generally see the letter “A” as red, and I thought, “No!! A is most definitely blue! S is red!” I think a red letter A would look really weird to me (reading The Scarlet Letter would probably drive me crazy 🙂 )

Words tend to take on the color of the first letter for me. So words that start with “A” are blue, words that start with “N” are orange, etc.

I think my favorite aspect of synaesthesia is seeing colors for sounds, though – I’ve noticed that I have certain songs grouped together in my mind because they have a certain overall color scheme (yellow songs, red songs, etc). It’s fun, really.

Interesting….I wonder if Synesthesia is linked to artistic minds….I do that too…

I find it so interesting how synesthesia takes on different forms with different people…. for instance, I would never judge a word by its first letter. Instead, I go for either the emphasized syllable or the letters that are the most noticeable, like “yll” in “syllable”. And even so, that only sets the stronger colors in the word– there will still be others mixed in afterward. “Syllable” is salmon pink, pale blue-green, and scarlet with a mottled brown-green-blue at the end. It’s a very pretty word in my mind, hehe.

Now I really want to go read some Nabokov.

This is fascinating. I have dyslexia so as long as I read all the words that are really in front of me I’m good. Sometimes I get some really bad translations like:
put a small animal in a source pen
put a small amount in a sauce pan

It’s very disturbing to be making cream of potato soup and using small animals. And I’m not even sure what a source pen is.

But letters and number are just that, no color no emotion. I can see where it would be distracting and frustrating if the number fight though…kinda like picking the wrong word.
