I recently got a male gryphon who I knew had some chips but arrived with much much more damage than I realized. I have several questions before I tackle his repairs!

1: he has several old chips that were badly repaired. The worst in on his wing which looks like several pieces were glued back on but not very well, Would it be best to just re-break all that off and resculpt it? I already have several other chipped areas that will need resculpted so one more is not the end of the world if thats what it needs.

      2. small chips. how best to repair? I feel like the epoxy sculpt wont hold well to such small areas. Part of me thinks maybe just sanding the jagged edge down and painting over would suffice?

      3. Epoxy sculpt, the smallest amount I see is a quarter pound, which is way more than I need, does it last a long time, are there smaller amounts I could get? I hate to get so much as I don’t do a lot of sculpting anymore and I don’t want to waste it!

I think that is all, for now anyway. Thanks so much in advance!

        1) I’d take a smalll file or other scraping tool ( carbide scrapers from Rio Rhondo work well for this) and pare off any excess rather than try to remove them, then fill defects with Apoxie Sculpt or other moldable epoxy and resculpt the detail. This avoids causing more damage when you remove the bad bits.

        2) epoxy sculpting materials do well filling small areas, but, if they’re small enough, smoothing the edges and repainting may work as well. Your piece, your call.

        3) Epoxy stores better if you put a piece of plastic wrap (Saran wrap, etc) over the top before putting the lid back on. Store in a cool place. If you mix more than you need you can freeze it, then thaw when needed. (Good for at least a couple of weeks).

        Hope this helps.

I had bought very small tubs of Apoxie Sculpt at Joanns; maybe another arts/crafts dealer would also have it in small packaging.
