Cat, the food is called Hills. He wont eat it, though. He ate two bites earlier, but my mom gave him a bite after I went back to work and he threw it up and now he wont touch it. Im pretty much giving him whatever he wants and will eat. He just had some puppy biscuits and a peice of chicken. At least he will be happier and is eating something. Hopefully he will keep it down.
Hills Science Diet. Best stuff on the market, either a/d or l/d, the l/d is for liver problems. It’s too bad he won’t touch it. If anything give him just boiled white meat chicken (no skin) mixed with rice (cook it with unsalted chicken broth if you want, NO butter). However, NO TREATS, no one really has any idea what’s in those things and it’s basically just full of crappy stuff. Kind of like the equivalent of potato chips and slimjims for people.
Keep trying to get him to eat the Hills Science Diet, it’s specially formulated to help with specific problems, maybe mix some in with plain boiled chicken if he’s absolutely not touching it.
Much love to you both and butt scratches for Rab!
December 17, 2008 at 10:59 am #745511*hugs* I’m still hoping for some good news…Hope springs eternal.
December 17, 2008 at 2:40 pm #745512You could try mixing it with baby food like I did with my Mister.
December 17, 2008 at 3:26 pm #745513Oh no, I’m afraid Nirvana and Skiberkh were both pretty dead on… I hope the vet brings you some good news. I hope Rab is treatable 😥
We used to boil white rice with boiled hamburger and cottage cheese for a cat we had with really bad body function problems. He was inbred and EVERYTHING you could imagine was wrong with him. He always got threw up and had diarrhea, but he survived for about 2 years on the rice diet relatively comfortably. I don’t know if the recipe would help Rab with his condition, but at this point, I doubt it would hurt and he would be eating something. Though it’s all on if he could keep it down.

Hamburger can be really fatty, and usually liver problems stem from too much fat/other stuff in the diet, that is if it’s not genetic. You could try baby food as well, but again it’s got a pretty high fat and calorie content formulated for babies (we’ve used this for sick kittens and puppies that I nursed back to health in my bathroom). For older dogs with problems, I know my mom says to stay strictly with skinless boiled white meat chicken and plain white rice, no butter as a last resort if they’re not eating prescription dog food.
I’m not trying to put down your suggestions Drag0n and 2Huberts, it’s just knowing the reasons behind not using certain foods for certain problems. This is all also assuming that it is a liver disease. Also, baby food seems to affect older dogs differently than older cats….besides the fact that it would be rather expensive to buy enough jars of baby food for a Rottie! 😆
Ski, let us know what the vet says and know we’re here for you!

I though I could relate, but I have never lost someone close to me. Now that its happening, I can relate alot better. Im sorry for what you just went thru. Its worse than I thought.
I’m just sorry you have to go through it. I’m hoping for news that his condition is treatable and not too expensive.
December 17, 2008 at 8:09 pm #745516I’m so sorry Ski, ***GIANT HUGS****
December 17, 2008 at 10:58 pm #745517Well no getting him to eat the the Hills (i/d) but he will eat chicken. I will try rice too. Vet said, and I quote here, “His liver is sick.” Guess she was putting it in lemans terms for me. He also has a mild case of anemia. She recommended an ultra sound. The E-vet has a machine and they can get me in tomorrow at 1800. The vet said we could discuss treatment after the ultra sound. I was kinda hoping to be able to do that after the blood test.
Rab ate this morning. He even at the dry food, which he would not do before. I dont know if this is like a recovery or just a break before he gets worse. Im trying not to get my hopes up but I can already feel it happening… like denial or whatever.
I will try rice. I cant even imagine how many jars of baby food I would need to fill Rab up.
December 17, 2008 at 11:07 pm #745518I’m glad to hear that he is eating a little…a sick liver is not a good thing…did you ever think of making your own food for him just pass it in the blender…that would be better than baby food since you know exactly what he is eating.
I used to make all of my son’s baby food…lots of work but so much healthierDecember 17, 2008 at 11:12 pm #745519Personally I would stick with the bland diet, boiled chicken and rice, throw the hills dog food out the door, it is filled with corn, which dogs can not digest. I am sorry Rab is sick, we just went through a scare with our cat and it is horrible.
December 18, 2008 at 2:58 am #745520lol, no offense taken, Cat, and the baby food is only to add a little extra flavor to tempt, not to feed. Well Ski, wasn’t good news, but wasn’t too terrible awful so far either. hugs
December 18, 2008 at 11:05 am #745521I’m really sorry to hear about your dog, I hope he’s going to be alright.
December 18, 2008 at 6:35 pm #745522Sorry to be coming into this thread kind of late, Ski. 🙁 Regarding the situation with Rab: for what it’s worth, at least the liver is capable of some regeneration; it’s a tough little dude and can put up with a lot. I’m glad it’s not autoimmune hemolytic anemia: that’s nasty stuff anyway.
The ultrasound is going to look for why the liver is having trouble, and I’m glad he’s having that done because it’ll tell you a lot. There may be a tumor in there (sorry :(), or it may be a nasty infection (in which case Amoxicillin is a great place to start, it having good access to the liver and not likely to do any harm). Knowing more about the situation and its cause will help you know what to expect. And if they can rule out something like cancer, then that’s good too.
You might ask your vet whether GI protectant drugs like Sucralfate might be helpful: if Rab’s stomach is upset, something to soothe it might help his appetite a little. She’ll be weighing the usefulness of any drug against what his liver can tolerate, so she may choose something else–everyone has their own preferred approach. Also, if he eats something and throws it up, he may feel a little nauseous when faced with that food again, or even think that the food has something wrong with it. When you find something that works, stick with it for as long as you can. If he tries all of his “safe diets” while he’s feeling nauseous, he may not trust any of them.
It sounds like you’re in good hands. This is a terrible situation to be in, but hang in there. Hugs!
December 19, 2008 at 6:53 am #745523Getting into this topic really late…I don’t know much about this kind of thing so I can’t give any advice, but it looks like you’ve been getting a lot of good input from everyone. I hope Rab is getting better now and will be OK! I know this situation must be very stressful. Hang in there, Ski!
December 19, 2008 at 7:44 am #745524Apparently Rab wont be getting better. The vet took X rays and an untrasound. What she found was a “mottled” liver. The liver should be one solid color and his has spots on it. She said no large tumors or anything like that, and she suspects some type of cancer. She said they can do a biopsy of the liver, but the only lady on island that does it lives on the big island and just left. She is not due back till mid January. I can possibly pay to fly her back out early, special for me, but I wont know that until tomorrow. What she told me, basically, was that the biopsy would tell me what is killing him… doesnt mean its treatable or anything like that. She doesnt think infection because no fever or anything indicating infection. I can also opt for surgery to biopsy the liver, and she can do that herself, but Rab would have to be under anesthetic. Rab didnt do well the last time he was under and im scared that at his age, he may not recover from it. I am not sure what to do here… If I need to, I can possably raise the $1300 for the biopsy. What Im worried about is that it wont do me any good and Rab would just suffer more. He’s not eating canned food anymore.. only the 100% chicken treats, but thats something. His equilibrium seemed off today… dont know what thats a symptom of or if its my imagination. The vet guestimated 1-2 weeks but that depends on various factors. I repeat: This sucks.
