You said bones? Is he still having bowel movements? Does he chew on other things? Socks the like? Perhaps he is blocked up? It could be so many things, hope the vet can figure it out for you Ski. My prayers are with you and Rab. (I honestly thought of a rabbit when I read this thread the first time, so I am sorry to have shied from it.) *Hugs*

Oh my. I really hope it is something minor. Poor Rab! Good luck at the vets!

Well the vet had no good news. They think its either liver failure or autoimmune hymolitic anemia. We will know when the blood results come back tomorrow. He only weighed 84 lbs. He was 92 two weeks ago but normally weighs 100. He is eating (though not much at all) and still drinking, but he throws up alot afterwords. His gums, eyes, and skin are all yellow. I didnt even think to look. 🙁 The vet called him ‘critical’ which of course got me all teary.

For the vet folks out there: When I asked about treatment and recovery for either of these things, she kinda didnt give me a straight answer. Can these things be cured? Is there a time frame? Is he eventually just gonna starve to death? She gave him some Amoxicillin but she said it may help with something though it was obvious she didnt expect it to. Im trying to look for some kind of possible recovery. I have to schedule X rays and hopefully an ultrasound but she didnt want to do that till the blood came back. Im sure there is a reason for that.

I’m so sorry to hear that, Ski. I hope something can be done for him.

I hope Rab is OK but please take him to the vet ASAP. When Tristen had the inverted stomach the vets at the emergency hospital told me if I hadn’t gotten him there when I did they would have lost him so don’t delay and keep us posted as to how he is. He is in my prayers and concerns.

*HUGS* Canine autoimmune hymolitic anemia can range from mild (and treatable) to severe and fatal. Essentially, it’s a disease where the dog’s own immune system is destroying the body’s red blood cells. Liver failure… Sometimes you can salvage part of a liver is part is still functional with surgery, since only 20-30 % being needed to function (not necessarily the greatest, but you could live). If the entire liver is diseased though, depending on the cause, the prognosis isn’t good.

*HUGS to you and Rab* *fingers crossed for treatable*

Edited: forgot the quote part at the beginning…

The vet isn’t going to be able to tell you anything concrete until they get the blood results back.

Given the color of his gums and eyes it’s most likely Liver Disease, and will definitely depend on how far along it is. On the bad side, really bad liver failure cases go really fast, maybe a month at most. I’m not trying to scare or hurt you, but I feel honesty is better in this case. The good news is that they may be able to treat it/ do surgery depending on how severe it is, and if he recovers will just have to be on a strict diet for the rest of his life.

The immune disease will depend as well, but I’m putting my cards with liver disease.

Ski I wish you the best of luck sweetie, and hope that things are more positive than they seem today. Try not to worry yourself until the lab results get back and take one step at a time. If he is “critical” they should take care of him ASAP and do what they can.

BIG HUGS to both of you!

BIG HUGS to both of you! Thanks girl. They gave me some special food, but only two cans. Hopefully we can just feed him slowly and he can keep it down. I’ll know tomorrow and keep ya’ll posted.

Most important part is keeping fluids down, a lot of the weight loss is usually water loss and from whatever it is he has. He will lose some weight from not eating/keeping food down, but it’s the disease that’s causing most of it. Did they say anything about giving him pedialyte or something with electrolytes? I forget the ratio of water to stuff tho….I’ll see if I can ask my mom.

They probably gave you science diet KD? or maybe RD? What were you feeding him before? (brand/type)

Above all else, TLC is the best thing for him! Give him some from us! =P

I’m sorry to hear about Rab. Based on the jaundice (the yellow eyes and gums) I would bet liver failure. If it is liver failure you might want to consider putting him down. It’s a painful bad way to die. You have my deepest sympathies and prayers Ski. *hugs*

He is still drinking and they didnt recommend anything else. They said not to let him dring large amounts at a time. He drank some there and only threw up a couple drops so at least he’s keeping that down somewhat. Im just so sad. They didnt give me much hope it seems like.
