No matter what it is, if he’s not eating and dropping weight, I wouldn’t wait to take him to the vet. Make an appointment as soon as possible, that way, if it’s something that you can treat, you haven’t waited until it’s so bad you might not be able to get him fixed up.
December 15, 2008 at 5:56 am #745466I’m sorry everything is piling up at once, Ski – and just around Christmas, too. Here’s hugs for you and Rab, and hoping he returns to normal soon.
December 15, 2008 at 6:03 am #745467I’m *SO* sorry to hear about your puppy Ski! 🙁 *sends warm dry fuzzies to you and Rab*
December 15, 2008 at 6:08 am #745468I’m sorry ski, I have 2 older dogs and sometimes they won’t eat for a day or so but they are both at healthy wieghts. I hope he perks up, the other dog attacking him could be becuase he senses Rabs weakness. Let us know what happens.
December 15, 2008 at 3:59 pm #745469I’m sorry Rab is feeling poorly. I’d take him to the vet too. Not eating is usually a good sign something if wrong. Don’t wait.
December 15, 2008 at 7:18 pm #745470I can’t express enough need to get him to the vet ASAP. That much weight loss and not eating, like everyone else has said, are BIG symptoms. Also the other animals may be fighting with him because there is something wrong…animals have 6th senses about these things.
Wishing you and Rab all the best! I’m really sorry he’s not doing good and am sending healing thoughts for him to get better!
December 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm #745471Well I am taking Rab to the walk in tomorrow at 0630. They said they have no appointments for the next two weeks and I think he could easily be dead by then. After I posted this last night, I went downstairs and Rab threw up all the food I had given him. It stayed down last night, but I found more barf this morning… I can only assume its from him. Mom said he ate fine (just canned food) this morning and I asked her to call if he pukes. Regardless, we will be going to the vet tomorrow. It just happened so fast. He started not eating and I just figured I would give it a couple days. When he ate the wet/dry mix, I figured we would be fine. Now that he is not eating that, and throwing up on top of it, I just dont think we can win this battle w/o a vet. Obviously its something else. I thought about a tooth but he has no problem eating crunchy treats. Thats why I assumed he was just being picky… because he ate treats and bones just fine. Thanks for all the good wishes. Hopefully the vet can tell me something. Now I gotta go to the command and ask for an AER loan to pay for this. 🙄
December 15, 2008 at 10:40 pm #745472Did you consider (probably gonna spell this wrong) but Parvo. My dog had Parvo when she was a little puppy and she didn’t eat, threw up anything she did eat or drink. She didn’t move and was weak. Just a suggestion. Hope all gets better soon!

Its not parvo. He is vaccinated and has been faithfully vaccinated every year. Also, he doesnt smell and parvo has a very distinct smell. I would recognize it anywhere. Hopefully they will take blood tomorrow. I assume they can tell me something with that. Can they detect cancer thru blood? I gotta look that up.

This is an older dog that has always had his vax, so Parvovirus is very unlikely. The symptoms sound classic pancreatitis to me, not eating, weight loss, vomiting, I am guessing he is also a bit lethargic, so the sooner we get a blood test, the sooner we know.
Anyway, we can all guess at what is going on until the cows come home, the blood results will hopefully give us the answers.

Sometimes they’ll check calcium levels when they look for cancer, but there’s no real blood test for it. The definitive diagnosis for any malignant cancer is usually the discovery of a lump and a biopsy to find out what it is. Leukemia can show up in blood cell counts.
Not eating, vomiting and weight loss could really be symptoms of…anything. Kidney failure, liver disease, pancreatitis, peritonitis, or some other infection.
The only way you’re going to know for sure is by bloodwork and/or xrays and any other work-ups the vet might decide to do. (And yes, parvo is unlikely in an adult dog, it’s almost purely a puppy disease.)

I will ask them to do x-rays tomorrow, too, then. Thats if they have an x-ray machine here. If not, I will make an appointment in Kalani. They can usually get me in the same week. There was no sign of cancer 2 yrs ago when he had x-rays but im guessing it can come up kinda quickly?? He has no lumps that I have found and I have been looking ever since Moocah started developing lumps (No worries, there… they were just fatty tissues) and they would show up pretty easy since he is so skinny right now.
December 16, 2008 at 1:11 am #745477Cancer can certainly happen fast, no doubt about it. Two years is more than enough time for something to come up.
I wish you the best of luck tomorrow with getting to the bottom of his issue, and I hope that it’s something that can be simply and easily dealt with.
December 16, 2008 at 1:17 am #745478Good luck with Rab tomorrow. I hope the vet can give you some answers.
December 16, 2008 at 4:54 am #745479Keeping my fingers crossed for Rab!!
