Thank you!! I’ll be practicing on the oil clay for a bit longer, but I’ll be needing some real clay eventually. I actually got the oil clay for my son to use for the art portion of homeschooling and I thought I’d borrow the white…he still has the grey. 😀
August 21, 2007 at 9:03 pm #609934Ha,ha… I love his little hind foot! He’s very sweet. 🙂
August 21, 2007 at 10:04 pm #609935I guess it was a otter before I read your description. I think it is really cute.
August 22, 2007 at 5:00 am #609936wow that’s really your first sculpture!? He’s so cute & I love the big eyes gives it an anime feel. It’s a really cute otter 🙂
August 22, 2007 at 12:35 pm #609937Well, I’ve squished around some basic forms to show my son how to mush it around….gumby type forms…but never actually sat down and said, “Today I will sculpt…” I was actually surprised it turned out as well as it did…. 8)
August 23, 2007 at 5:36 am #609938Can you imagine what you will achieve with practice after a period of time? 😀
August 23, 2007 at 5:45 am #609939Looks good!!!
He almost looks like a character from the ‘serendipity’ books with those big eyes 😀
August 23, 2007 at 11:50 am #609940Thank you so much for all the encouraging words!! Once I get the dentist paid I’ll have to order some sculpey to make keepables! 😀

August 24, 2007 at 6:11 am #609943Some other types of clay to consider if you don’t want to have to bake it
– Crayola Air hardening clay, found at Staples and Craft stores
– Crayola Model Magic Clay, found at Staples and Craft stores. not as good for fine details but is lightweight. I used it to make a bunch of masks
– Critter Clay, found at the taxidermists who will also have all kinds of really cool eyes. It’s an air hardening clay that acts almost identical to real ‘have to fire in a kiln’ clay
– Apoxie Sculpt, a 2 part air dry clay but only has a limited window of workability. Also found at the taxidermistsAugust 27, 2007 at 12:34 am #609944My apoxiesculpt has kindof a gummy texture, but it may be old…I only use it for patch jobs and don’t particularly like its texture. I may try out the others though, and if I don’t like it I can guarantee my son will! 😀

Apoxie Sculpt is only gummy and sticky at first, if you don’t like it’s consistancy when you first mix it, and I don’t like it much either. Wait about an hour after, then it isn’t bad to work with at all, though you have to remember that now you only have about 2 hours before it finishes setting up.
Also, if you dip your fingers or tools into a bit of water before you press on or work on the apoxie, it doesn’t stick and you can smooth it.
Just takes a little getting used to, at first I hated it. Now I like it a lot, it does alot more than I ever thought it would.

August 31, 2007 at 6:41 pm #609946I got some Sculpey and the texture is really different from oil clay! Wow…I’ll need to practice some with it but I really love the fact it won’t dry out on me until I’m ready to bake it. 8)
