Parrots need some help

Many people don’t realize, but homeless parrots is actually a big issue in the USA. Not as much as dogs and cats, but most rescue groups are overflowing with unwanted parrots!

To make matters worse, the economy is seeing a downturn of people buying parrots (and that’s probably a good thing) but this means that huge-scale breeders… which are often like puppy mills and set up with as many birds as possible to churn out baby parrots (bad thing)… are going under and suddenly hundreds of birds are needing homes. Breeding parrots are usually not overly tame and require work to get them up to ‘companion’ quality and some never do, so usually they are auctioned off cheaply and any leftover birds may be euthanized. This is a terrible, sad situation! Many parrots go back into poor breeding situations.

While paying money for the birds is not at all ideal (as it just supports the auction), the rescue groups in Florida where this is most commonplace are trying to save the birds as much as they’re able, hoping at least to provide them a better quality of life.
Sadly there is an auction this weekend with over 700 parrots in it. These Florida-based Parrot Rescue groups are trying to help. If you know of anyone that can help or donate a few dollars I’m sure it would help them.
I was just looking at the photos on the auction site. While the birds have sizable cages, the only thing they have in the cage (besides assumed food and water) is a single perch, often just a dowel or piece of PVC. No enrichment whatsoever or even anything to chew besides the perch.

Also, because I am aware there are a lot of ‘pity scams’ online, I looked it up. The auction is real and so are the rescues.

Ugh. Those Stampler folks have a reputation for doing these despite public outcry. This isn’t the first, and with the economic climate it won’t be the last. I wish I could help, but it’s just not in the cards right now. 🙁

I recently rescued an amazon and an alexandrine parakeet. The alexandrine is very nice, but oh man, that amazon has already left scars on my hand. I’m having a hard time with her trusting me, but I figure with their long life span, she will warm up eventually.
It’s kinda of funny, she was in that show on Showtime called the Brotherhood and was in a Danimals Yogurt commerical. Maybe she’s just a diva?
