(Some authors I like have turned out to be twits when I actually encountered them in person or on the net. That’s always sad.)
Yeah, I’ve corresponded with John Varley too, nice guy. Found out, after I left the Central Coast that he lives there. Auugh!
Alan wasn’t what I expected, he isn’t much older than I am, and I had thought he was older. But other than that, he is very cool. He told me I mamaged to ask a question no one had before. Something I am proud of, I asked if he got to choose his book cover art, turns out the answer is no.

Sorry, it had to be done 😆
That needs to be edited a bit… the new version needs to read
“They passed down all the roads long ago, and the windstone collectors followed close behind them, leaving many more footprints…”
Trample, trample, trample! 😀

Weirdness… Of all the authors… I just found and started reread Alan Dean Foster’s ‘Sentence to Prism’ two days ago and the poof he gets mentioned here. Spooky 😯 ‘Twilight Zone’ Theme follows – Dodo Dodo Dodo Dodo….
April 26, 2007 at 2:40 pm #564692I have to say that one of the nicest authors I’ve met is Terry Brooks. He was so great! I had brought about 30 of his books to the convention, then I felt weird when I was in line for his autograph because everyone else had 3-5 books. I picked out a couple favorites and put the rest away. When I got up to him, he said, “Where’s that bag of books I saw you with?” I told him what I decided, and he said, “Go get them.” So I did. And he signed every one! Not just his signature either. Each one had a note, his sig, and the date. Awesome! And he took a photo with me.
I haven’t met Alan Dean Foster yet. Hopefully he’ll come to a convention in the midwest soon.
Patricia McKillip was pretty great. Ellen Klages, awesome.
The best was Kevin J. Anderson. He almost became a friend. If there’d been more time, he would have. I met him at a convention where each one of the guests sat at different tables for the banquet and you could sit with them. So my hubby and I sat with him. We talked a lot about writing, and what my Honorable Mention from the Writer’s of the Future Contest meant I accomplished (6th-8th place out of 40,000 entries!). We hung out a bit at the room parties, and when I said goodbye to him on Sunday, he hugged me. He was so nice! He and his wife Rebecca Moesta were both so encouraging to me as a writer. Whenever I get discouraged, I just think of things they told me. 🙂
April 26, 2007 at 5:04 pm #564693Anne McCaffrey is very friendly. Her son Todd is too. I was lucky enough to meet them at DragonCon. 😀
April 26, 2007 at 5:10 pm #564694OH! I would LOVE to meet Anne McCaffrey. It’s good to know she’s nice.
Mercedes Lackey ruined my image of her, although I still like her writing and her books. I won’t go into more detail than that.
Katherine Kurtz is nice too. She came to my dealer’s table to sign my books because she heard I was stuck there during her autographing session.
This fall I’m planning to be at Valley-Con in Fargo, ND. They are having Diane Duane, Peter Morwood, Janny Wurts, and even more writers there. Also, WisCon in Madison, WI, over Memorial weekend is a huge writer’s convention. I always meet great writers there… cough, cough, Ursula K. LeGuin, cough, cough. 😀

When you see her, please tell Janny Wurts to get the Curse of the Mistwraith series finished!! I’m growing old here….lol

I got to meet Kevin J. Anderson and his wife Rebecca Moesta at Dracon*Con 98. If I had realized she was going to be there I would have brought one of the SW books they co-authored. I still have my hard back copy of “Darksaber” that he signed though. Don’t plan on getting rid of it ever.

You got to Mercedes Lackey? Lucky you! She hasn’t been on book signing tours in a LONG time.
April 26, 2007 at 7:25 pm #564697Yeah. Mercedes Lackey was at Convergence in Minneapolis a couple years ago, with her husband Larry Dixon.
I need to tell Janny Wurts that message for myself too, lamorte. Honestly! What’s taking so long? 😆
April 26, 2007 at 7:38 pm #564698I would love to meet Lackey!
I’ve had my image of McCaffrey ruined too, sadly. Though not by Lackey. But I probably shouldn’t bring that up again.
April 26, 2007 at 8:33 pm #564699I’d like to meet Mercedes too, now I am wondering how she ruined your image of her.
Not everyone is as nice as you hope they are, and then some you think won’t be, are. Best thing I guess is to have no preconceived notions when meeting someone.
I lucked out on meeting ADF, I knew he was at the con, but I was chained to a con table of my own and didn’t expect to meet him. But the bookseller next to my table asked him to come and presign a few books and so in the hour before everyone else came into the dealers room, there he was, all mine for like 20 mins.
I don’t write, well not much, mostly am an artist. But is was neat to meet him, I’ve always loved his Spellsinger and Flinx series.

Emerald, just to clarify…did Mercedes Lackey ruin your image of Anne McCaffrey or of Mercedes herself? I was a bit confused. 😕

I knew that didn’t sound right when I wrote it. Mercedes Lackey ruined her own image in my eyes when I met her. Let’s just say that she wasn’t the best guest at the convention, so I understand why she doesn’t do too many of them. I don’t want to publically slander her though, and it could have been just an “off” weekend, so I don’t want to go into details.
I haven’t met Anne McCaffrey, so I still see her with rose-colored glasses 😉
April 26, 2007 at 10:35 pm #564702Thanks for the link, Kyrin!
I just met Christopher Moore at Lunacon and he was great! Also met Tamora Pierce – she was very nice and signed books for me when she wasn’t formally signing. I was afraid to intrude but someone else brought books up and she saw me watching and asked if I wanted books signed!
I’ve also met Suzanne Brockman – she writes romance books about Navy Seals. She is super nice! At the last signing I went to she was having a drive for bone marrow donors to help out a Seal from Spotswood, NJ – he went to the same high school my niece went to. (Turned out he matched with TWO people – I think he got the donation from a woman in Germany.)
And the time I almost passed out from excitement – I met NORA ROBERTS! The In Death is one of my all time favorite series (the Anita Blake series is my other favorite) and I got to meet her, got books signed by her and a picture! I’m such a fan geek!
April 27, 2007 at 12:22 am #564703DDVM nice siggy!
I met Suzanne Brockmann two weeks ago. She stopped over in Seattle on her way to Alaska to see her son in a play. Her husband Ed Gaffney was with her. He writes mysteries. They both seemed very down to earth.
