I didn’t ever like the plant bowls for betta’s. I always thought that they were curl. But that is just me!
July 20, 2008 at 8:23 pm #723955Jen, I read that Betta site, actually. That’s why I said it would take me 2 pages to type out everything.
I have a friend with a small tank he’s going to sell me, I may have to ask you about those ferns though, when I’m going to get one (probably not until the end of the summer).
I won’t get one until I have the plant though. 😕 I read that the fish really like the plants. Not to eat though, they are carnivorous. 😉
Anyway I have to do laundry, tata!

And thanks, Jen, for that website. There is some good info there, and I saved it to my favorites.
I think I’m going to stick with the plastic plant I have at this time. He seems to like it and it’s less work for me (my plate is full right now!!).
We put Ghost’s light on a timer, so it will shut off at night and on in the morning on it’s own. We are going to a big convention in August (yes, I have someone coming to feed him), so this way, my helper won’t have to come twice a day, and he won’t be left in the dark all day.
I want to see more pictures of your betas!! 😀 :squeak:
July 21, 2008 at 1:29 am #723958Well I think I can work out a deal where I get a tank free… so once I get that, some plants (plastic or otherwise, I will have to see if I can find some good plastic ones) and those nice little $3.99 bettas. However, Petsmart doesn’t seem to sell betta food. What’s up with that? They have all the other stuff imaginable for fish, and they don’t have food. Just the tropical fish flakes. 🙄
There was a beautiful one, so if I can get the tank soon, I may just see if he’s still there…
He was red with some blue on the fins right near the body, that faded to red. Gorgeous!
EDIT: BAH. The guy told me the tank wasn’t even his. Bah, Bah, and double Bah. Now I have to find something else. Preferably something else cheap. 😉

If nothing else, places like… walmart.. have it too.But Wally World is so far away… 😆 Also they have a decent sized bowl I could use for $15, I couldn’t find anything else. (and a 2gal tank that Petsmart was supposed to have was out of stock, poo) I think it’s either just under a gallon, it’s close at least, and designed fairly spaciously.
Well they have bloodworms but the price 😯 I wouldn’t want to feed a fish exclusively that, it’s more expensive then my catfood!
July 21, 2008 at 6:33 pm #723962I used to have 4 or 5 Bettas at any given time. Just couldn’t resist “saving” them from those horrid little plastic containers at walmart. 😀 My kids called it my Betta rescue program 😆
I just kept them in assorted large glass containers I had on hand. Old vases, a giant ( gallon size) Brandy snifter, etc. 😆July 21, 2008 at 10:28 pm #723963I had a beautiful blue beta and some tetras in an awesome 10 gallon tank with real plants and pretty black and pink rocks. They were so pretty to watch!
Then I went on vacation. My mom agreed to take care of them for me for the week I was gone.
I came home and the tank was disgusting. It looked like she’d dumped a weeks worth of food on top and just forgotten about them. The food was molding, the tank was green, the filter had stopped filtering water but was still running dry, my tetras were floating belly up on top of the water and were molding. My beta was still barely alive, and I tried to save him, but he died two days later. The tank was so disgusting and I was so mad that I just slammed it into the dumpster. I really didn’t want to clean that mess.
I don’t have the room to get another tank in my bedroom, but I still want one 😀 they’re pretty fishies.
congrats emerald 😀
July 22, 2008 at 2:44 am #723964There’s been bubbles/foam at the top of the aquarium now all the time. I don’t think it’s Ghost doing it. I think it’s the filter. I’m going to change his water tomorrow, and rinse the aquarium and the gravel again. See if that helps. I’ve got the new water set up and waiting to go tomorrow. I’ve shut the filter off for tonight. So there will be places on the top of the water that are clear so he can gulp air.
July 22, 2008 at 5:06 am #723965The bubbles are meant to last a long time (since they’re a ‘nest’), so that’s still pretty normal…but, it never hurts to be safe!
July 22, 2008 at 3:40 pm #723966Well, I would get rid of them every morning, since there is no place for him to gulp air or for me to feed him with all the bubbles filling up the space between the top of the water and the bottom of the lid.
But I watched for a while, and the filter is making the bubbles – filling in the space with them. Not Ghost.
He’s been pretty happy without the water filter running, so I may just take it out. It would give him more room without it.
July 22, 2008 at 4:54 pm #723967I’ve never put a filter in with my betas. I read someplace that they really dislike the turbulent water, since they come to the top to breathe.
So maybe getting rid of the filter would be the best thing.
July 22, 2008 at 5:26 pm #723968Emerald, foaming water (that is not caused by a happy boy betta,) can mean a few things.
What brand of water conditioner are you using? Some brands are much better than others. Avoid anything such as “Stress Coat” or the ones where they add aloe to the mix… there is no proof that the aloe helps the slime coat of the fish, and it only tends to foam and gum up the filter over time. I think it is good for sometimes helping an injured fish but in general isn’t a good everyday water conditioner.
How long has it been since you set the tank up? If you’re running a filter it’s best to let the tank cycle, which can take 3-4 weeks depending. I don’t think you have any detergents or soaps in the water for you to have to worry about rinsing them out (your fish would have died right away if this was the case). You may only complicate things if you really clean the tank.
