But my favorite is gothic metal/rock and Japanese. Nightwish, Xandria, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Midnattsol, Leaves’ Eyes/Liv Kristine and (a few songs of, but not a lot since they have some of that awful “cookie monster” voice) Theatre of Tragedy. Those are all a good start for gothic metal. I’ve heard Sonata Arctica called gothic metal, though I don’t think they are. Might just be metal in general. But I like them as well.
*flails* Really! Haha I’m so excited, female-fronted gothic/ symphonic metal/ rock is my favourite too! Well, okay, Evanescence is my favourite and a lot of people don’t consider them metal, but Within Temptation, Epica, Lacuna Coil, and Nightwish (And Tarja’s Solo stuff) are my other favourite bands. I saw Lacuna Coil recently, at the beginning of February and got to see Within Temptation for the first time last September. I missed Nightwish, Tarja, and Leaves’ Eyes when they came through though.
I never liked Xandria a whole lot before, they had a few songs I liked but nothing major, but their recent album that came out on the 6th is amazing! I can’t turn it off. I just got Epica’s new one today but haven’t given it a thorough listen yet.
And also, when you say cookie monster voice, you mean the growling stuff right? Because I hate that too XD Part of the reason I prefer Evanescence and Within Temptation over Epica, Tristania, Eluveitie, etc. Actually I think the only reason I like Epica and Tristania is because Simone and Vibeke’s vocals are so amazing. I’ve listened to a bit of Midnattsol and Theatre of Tragedy but not a whole lot, I much prefer the melodic female vocals.
Haha, sorry for the long reply, it’s just exciting to find someone who likes the same music I do! 😀
Yeah, the cookie monster is like, when they’re using that horrid grungy, like you said, growling noise and still trying to sing or yell in it. Hate it so much. And yeah. Tristania has it all over the place, so I never listen to their stuff. I think I like one or two songs that didn’t have that voice in it. Forever Slave uses it a bit too. Which sucks, since I enjoy the female’s voice.
Honestly, when I was first introduced to Xandria (by random. I downloaded a bunch of random Gothic music many’a years ago. Geez. 10+ or so years ago?) and the, like 3 or 4 songs, didn’t interest me at all so it took me awhile to investigate their stuff. But I LOVE their album “India”, which made me just give all their other work a new chance… and now I like oh… 97% of their work. Oooh the song “Sisters of the Light” is my favorite from them. “Return to/India” are both close behind it, and then “The Lioness”.
I’m not big into Evanescence. But yeah, I thought they were rock, not metal? Regardless, I like a few songs, like their hits (Immortal, Bring me to Life, etc) but beyond that… not much else. I like “Hello” (what can I say? I’m a sucker for depressing music). That’s my favorite from them. But being honest, I haven’t listened to them in, wow, years probably.
I have SO much gothic metal music. It’s great stuff :3

If you listen to Tristania’s 2007 album, Illumination, there is much less growling. I think that was after the growler in the band left, so the album is much softer overall. They have a few gorgeous ballads worth listening to, like “Destination Departure”, “Down”, “Lotus”, and “Bird”. With Tristania, Epica, Eluveitie, all that, I tend to listen to the songss without the harsh male vocals almost exclusively, though it depends on my mood. I tend to prefer the ballads 😛 Epica actually has some crazy awesome ballads, my favourites are “Tides of Time”, “Solitary Ground (the single version)”, “Feint”, “safeguard to Paradise”, and “Higher High”.
Maybe I should give Xandria’s other albums another chance. Have you listened to their new one at all? It just came out last week. It’s changing my opinion on them a lot. I think I have all their albums, just haven’t listened to them in ages. Definitely giving “Sisters of Light” a listen when I get home.
Do you like Sirenia? Or the Gathering? Or After Forever/ ReVamp? I don’t even think the Gathering is really metal at all but a lot of people who like the female fronted gothic rock love them. My favourite song is “You Learn about It”. I don’t like After Forever or ReVamp, again because of the growling, but there are a few gems in there. “Sweet Curse” by ReVamp is probably my favourite song of all time, by any band, ever. XD
Hello by Evanescence is an awesome song, I love the depressing ones also. Their new song (which they better make a single), “Lost in Paradise”, is a really gorgeous depressing song. It’s faster than Hello and not as creepy but pretty awesome nonetheless. 😀
March 13, 2012 at 9:52 pm #876612Eee female fronted goth metal – some of my favorite stuff! But I also like music I can sing to, and I’m a soprano so their music tends to be in my range.
My faves are Within Temptation, Nightwish (both singers, I find it weird that a lot of people are all for the new girl or the old one), Lacuna Coil, Delain, Xandria (though I haven’t listened to it much recently.
But I like a lot of other music too – a bunch of oldies that my mother has sheet music for that I grew up with – one of my faves to sing with my mother is The Gambler by Kenny Rogers, but there were many more!
… I can pretty much appreciate anything that’s actually singing (not rap, or growling “cookie monster” singing)…. 🙂

Yay! Another one! 😀 I like both Nightwish singers, but for different reasons. Tarja’s solo stuff is amazing too, I love the slower ballads. I liked Dark Passion Play but honestly didn’t care for Imaginaerium at all. Not because of the singer, I just didn’t like it overall. OH and Delain, another band I like! Charlotte is so nice too, she usually responds to people on twitter and her blog and such.
March 13, 2012 at 10:32 pm #876617The only gothic music I like is Nox Arcana . Beautiful music . I use to like Midnight Synicate but I lost interest in them . Nox Arcana is just the better one .

Epica does have some good songs! I like “The Alleged Paradigm” a lot (yeah, no vocals, but no matter), “Quietus” and “Blank Infinity”. And yes, Solitary Ground!
I do have a lot of songs from The Gathering and After Forever, but I can’t say that I’ve listened to them at length. If you have some good songs from them to recommend, I’ll have a listen!
I have a few songs from Sirenia. But, like the others, I haven’t listened to them at length.March 15, 2012 at 12:15 am #876689Jennifer – so funny, you linked Porcupine Tree (which no one that I’ve EVER met has heard of!) but not my favorite song XD My favorite is Trains 🙂

I’ve also fallen for Celtic Thunder .March 24, 2012 at 11:09 pm #877188Wow, I gotta catch up on what everyone has recommended! XD
So, I’m usually really good with vocals while I paint, ’cause it weirdly helps me concentrate (my mind multitasks almost ALL the time, so the vocals help that part of my mind that wants to do something else concentrate on something while the part of my mind that is painting can stick with the painting) does that make *any* sense? lol! XD .. So on a painting I’m not enthused about, the vocals will help my mind wander someplace else, or think about something else while I paint.. keeping me from getting bored… if it’s a painting that I do enjoy, vocals and sound will make my mind wander with inspiration, and often my music will directly affect my paintings, the more a song speaks to me, the more inspired the painting will be… It’s totally weird but works for me 😀 That’s why most of my paintings are named after songs..
Last night I found for wonderful inspiration music “The Piano Guys” – http://www.youtube.com/user/ThePianoGuys just really got my mind going 🙂
I do my most creative work when I’m listening to something that has a haunting sound to it 🙂 ‘n this is absolutely the mos broad landscape of music genres..
