I saw that episode and thought that very same thing at first! I can’t seem to see anything in her throat and the vet said he didn’t feel any obstructions. I wanted him to do an x-ray but he said he though bloodwork would be more beneficial so I’m waiting on that. GAH!
Heh, I remember the vets thinking it was quite funny on the show-lol Thankfully they got it out easily! I guess you’d probably be able to see it if that were what was wrong with your kitty, I would have wanted an x-ray to cause you can’t see THAT far just by looking in the mouth. Maybe the bloodwork will show something, I know how stressed cats get when it’s vet time 🙁
Maybe you could try posting her problem here? Lots of knowledgeable people willing to help. I go there whenever I have kitty questions :*
November 3, 2008 at 2:17 am #737280Just a thought, drag0n: asthma can also cause coughing and gagging signs in cats. Cats don’t cough very well, so it doesn’t sound like much when they do.
Take a good look at her breathing when she’s resting (awake). If her sides are moving significantly more than usual for her, then a chest X-ray is a really good idea. With your regular vet, of course, not Dr. Nolikee. With a lot of hospitals you can call and insist on seeing one vet only.
Good luck!
November 3, 2008 at 4:44 am #737281I agree! Asking for one vet is a good idea, since it’s like going to one pharmacy or one general practitioner… someone gets to know you and your history (or in this case, your cat’s history). That guy is absolutely unacceptable. I’d question whether I’d want to even call him a vet. I certainly understand the no real need to vaccinate a cat that stays inside (I grew up with a cat that lived to be 22 and went to the vet twice in his life… first when he got his initial checkup after my brother got him, and when I took him to be euthanized due to cancer – not my choice… being a kid at the time, but he was healthy and was an only cat who never left the house, so *shrug*), though in MA, it is required by law that all cats, dogs and ferrets are vaccinated for Rabies
(cats and dogs after 6 months, ferrets after 3 months – googled it). That doesn’t mean how you were treated was acceptable in any way. He should also have taken into consideration Snickers’ history with shots and her reactions. I know a friend who should get flu shots because he works with seniors, but can’t (allegic to eggs), so that requirement gets waived because it would kill him. Someone pissed in his cornflakes as a baby or something 👿 I would definitely find a new vet and never go back.We had a horrible vet (the vet office was close, got bigger, and seemed to gradually care more about money than actually caring for animals). He tried to bleed us dry when our cocker Muffin (mom’s name choice.. not mine!) was ill. He ended up suffering from renal failure (put down a few days before I left for college… not fun). I went with my parents when we went to pick him up from that office and they were trying to talk circles around and above my parents with medical terms, terms that I understood perfectly (being a bookwork does pay off). I told my parents I didn’t trust them and told them why. I actually called the person talking to my parents out on the language thing by putting the long, jargon riddled speech into simple layman’s terms for my parents. The look on their face was like someone had just knocked the wind from their sales and they weren’t expecting it. Interestingly enough, my neighbor’s daughter have boxers. One of their boxers was treated by them for the same thing, renal failure, and they got a similar run around. The dog literally was half a healthy weight when the dog was put down. Not right. We have since switched vets for our dogs. I may have to travel a little further, but it is worth it for good care. So much better! Makes me really reconsider the thought of going back to school for veterinary studies instead of language (it was a consideration at one point back before college). Hopefully the cat hospital treats you better! Good luck and good thoughts for Snickers! She’s a sweetie!
Too bad I wasn’t with you Drag0n. I would have ripped him a new one. 👿 Your house is VERY clean and your pets well taken care of. I can indeed vouch for that!
November 3, 2008 at 5:03 am #737282we had a similar thing happen to us… and the vet was horrible..
after checking around we found out that he had several lawsuits against him..
in your case the way he acted was a form of medical malpractice (vet malpractice) the way he treated you and the cat…
he may think he’s ok, but if you pushed it you could file a lawsuit and make a big deal out of it..
what I did, was write a very long and precise letter and listed all the things our vet did and said wrong and how he treated the cat and explained that if he was a “real” doctor and did that to a human, he could possibly be sued for large amounts of money..
then I demanded a refund of any money paid, because the things he did, tests and everything were improper for the symptoms our cat had, that we shouldn’t be obligated to pay for his “incompetence”..
we got a check for what we paid about a week later… and moved to a new vet..
so, if you don’t find out what’s going on, then maybe it’s a good idea to dispute what he did… either way I would write a letter about how he acted towards you, and treated you and your cat…
you just have to find out the right person to send it to…
November 3, 2008 at 3:49 pm #737283I’ll try that forum and thank you siberkh1, I know if anyone knows how spoiled rotten my animals are it’s you, LOL!
My boyfriend actually called the better business bureau and found out he has a history there too

It’s not hard to do and it will warn other people away from that vet. Also tell everyone you know not to go to him. That’s one thing that the vet has forgotten. Talk about bad service gets spread around faster than talk about good service.
November 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm #737285Ditto what Pegasi said. Bad reports, customer service, etc. spread faster than the cold virus. Hitting ’em in the pocketbook always gets results.

November 3, 2008 at 11:24 pm #737286OKay so now I’ve been playing phone tag with the vet. I called to see if the test results were in and the girl at the desk said they were so I was on hold for about 20 minutes and got “well, he’s with a patient and will call you back” Then my phone rang and I ran to the back (cause I’m at work) and before I could pick up he was in the process of leaving me a voicemail. I tried calling back but just got a busy signal. I listened to the voicemail and it just said “hello, this is dr. brusie returning your call” and that’s all! So I called and called, finally it rang and the same girl answered. I said “I JUST missed the call and could I speak to dr. brusie about the blood results?” I go on hold for another 15 minutes or so. Then a SECOND girl asks me the same thing, like she didn’t know why I was on hold. I wait for another 5-10 minutes and then I get that “he’s returning other paitents calls and he will call me right back when he’s off the phone.” So that was about an hour ago!
ARGH! If it’s not something bad then why wouldn’t he have just said so. I’m so worried now I feel sink to my stomach! Either he doesn’t care of loves to play mind games. GAH! I asked the girl if she could just PLEASE let me know if the results were good or bad and she said she would be more confortable if the vet actually spoke with me about them. 😥 What’s wrong with my cat!?!?

November 4, 2008 at 3:27 pm #737288Sorry, you’re dealing a bad vet. My vet actually won’t vaccinate animals with vaccine allergies and she does treat them. She’s even gone so far as to provide documentation that the animal has bad reactions to vaccinations and in her opinion it would be detrimental to the animal to vaccinate. The owners still have to be careful about biting accidents if there are any, but ti does clear them if someone tries to say they are not taking care of the animal properly. I hope it works out and we’ll keep our paws crossed that nothing is wrong with your kitty on my end. That’ a lot of paws comming from my house. 😉 😆

Sun Dragon Koi #3November 4, 2008 at 4:18 pm #737289OKay so I FINALLY got word back from the vet this morning. First off he told me “GREAT NEWS, you’re cat doesn’t have rabies” ….. NO KIDDING!!!! 🙄
All of her levels were normal for the most part. Her sugar was a little high, but nothing to be worried about. She doesn’t seem to have diabetes or anything like that. I guess her white blood cell count should be around 6,000 – 7,000 and hers was actually about 18,000 which suggests she has a massive infection of some sort, but she didn’t have a temperature so it’s very strange. He then asked me if there has been any unusual changes that may be stressing her out…the only thing I can think of it the new kitten….she HATES him and is constantly hissing and hiding from him since he arrived and her p[ersonality has done a complete 180 the past 2 weeks because of it. I’ve been hoping she’ll adjust, but I just thought she was being stubborn…
Gah! I don’t know what to do, but the only thing he could suggest is to keep her on the amoxidrop medicine. I don’t know if I have to find a new home for the kitten now or what… I’m very relieved she’s apparently healthy…but what am I supposed to do if she keeps making herself sick due to stress? *sob*

What a D*ck. 👿
I talked to my vet yesterday too and she said she wouldn’t vaccinate a cat that had reactions either.

Kitten-bit came with an upper respiratory infection, didn’t he? It’s quite possible that she may have caught it, if he did. And her WBC isn’t something I would be alarmed with, it’s not astronomical (I’ve seen much, much higher) but it is indicative of some systemic stress. Like a URI.
I would keep her and Sticky separated for a while and reintroduce them gradually. My kitten, when I first got her (four years ago now) spent a lot of time behind the bathroom door while the elder felid got used to the idea of another cat in the house. At first she had the same reaction Snickers is having – fussing up a storm whenever the kitten was out, but she eventually got used to it and now they just beat each other up.
edit: Normal limits on a WBC can be anywhere from 5 to 20k in a cat, if I recall my clinical pathology correctly.
November 4, 2008 at 6:44 pm #737292I agree with Rusti. The kitten will put some stress on her but separate them and give her some time. I’m currently fostering an older cat for my cousin’s ex-girlfriend (I did it for the cat not the person) this is the second time around. The first time it was bad and she was very unpleasant. But this time she seems to have settled in better. Cats will usually work it out given enough time. But it can take upward of 3 weeks sometimes. Stress combined with a little URI could make her numbers go up and make her extra crabby because she feels bad. In Selina’s case it took months…months of cat fights ugh! 🙄
But I’m glad the kitty’s numbers are okay.Looking for Blue Fawn Baby Kirin

Sun Dragon Koi #3November 4, 2008 at 8:40 pm #737293Oh wow Rusti, that’s a relief to hear. He made it sound like the white blood cell count was ridiculous and practically off the chart!
My plan is just to keep them better seperated for now. It’s just so hard with the kitten because I don’t have any doors in my house except for the bedroom and the bathroom and the kitty scales baby gates in a single bound! He’s so needy and clingy and follows me everywhere I go. You know, the cracked out kitten phase when they are into EVERYTHING and have to be attatched to your pants if you stand still for too long. I’m sure Snickers feels like she can’t have a single moment of uninterrupted cuddle time with me and it was really showing in her attitude, but now it’s effecting her health.
I’ll have to kennel the kitten a little more then I’ve been until she gets use to the idea… she really is a special case though. SHE HATES ALL OTHER CATS with the unrequited PASSION ON 1000 SUNS! I don’t know why, she was perfectly fine with all the cats she grew up with, but any other new feline that has been introduced she has run out of the home one way or another. Any other critter she’s good with. Dogs, ferrets…. she just hates cats. *sigh* I wish I could explain to her she’s not being replaced. 🙁
