Well, I don’t! XDI hate using my airbrush, to be honest o__o It’s just a pain to clean up afterward… I hate it. Not to mention while you’re airbrushing you have to clean it, otherwise the paint gets choppy. Blah. Not worth it for me. Sometimes I’ll randomly get an urge to do a pyo in mostly airbrush… though not often at all. Looking at my gallery, only three dragons are airbrushed… and they all ooolllld early dragons. All my ki-rins are hand done and same with my wolves. I actually started out using an airbrush on the pyos, but switched to all brush because it’s just easier…
I haven’t in awhile, but I do like using it for basecoats because, as you said, it takes just a minute XDJust out of curiosity, what kind of airbrush are you using? o.o

Eh, I really have no idea (I have two). They were bought so long ago. I should really just buy a new one or something they’re that old.

XD I mean, are they gravity-feed? Or siphon-feed? Or is it an AB (expensive like whoa, but for very fine detail)? Here’s the one I got –>

It’s a handy little guy, and you can buy extra bottles to just switch between. Plus, lids for them to keep the paint for later. e.e Hobby Lobby (full of awesome, as always…) had some little Paasche bottles that don’t fit the siphon lids, so watch out. >.> I would have bought them on accident if they hadn’t had the siphon lids for sale too, so I could try them out. I think it’s best just to buy the bottles with the siphon lids, and then some extra regular lids so you can keep the leftover paint if you want.

Oh! XD My double action airbrush is a gravity feed, while the other is just a single action siphon-feed.

Hrm. Which one does the paint get choppy on? Or is it both? What brand of paint do you use? o.o I hadn’t noticed anything like that with mine, but…if it’s going to happen, I want to know before I start spraying something important. XD
September 13, 2008 at 3:49 am #670147First in progress pic of a new kirin. =) I had to paint his horn silver. >.>; There was a nick in the plating (which also had some hairline cracks), and I figured it would look better in silver anyways, with those grey eyes…too bad it’s not as nice and smooth as plating, but eh. <3
I’m attempting an ‘agate’ sort of pattern. o.o; We shall see how it goes.
I took this picture with my crappy cellphone camera b/c I was too lazy to go downstairs and get a real one.
September 13, 2008 at 4:56 am #670148I’ve seen worse cell phone pictures
this is going to be interesting to watch develop ^^ I look forward to seeing more, you paint beautifully

Also, I lost both of those ‘auctions’, since I wasn’t willing to pay more than $40 for a PYO Kirin blank. =x Oh wells, more Poadâ„¢ monies.
In other news, I have started experimenting with my airbrush. >.> The air compressor scares me. XD I have this idea that it will blow up, even though I take very good care of it. e.e *bonks herself* It will probably make some things a lot easier, though. Anyone else here use one? I’m pretty sure Kujacker does…and probably purplecat? What do you guys like better about using an airbrush? o.o Aside from how it takes a quarter of the time to lay down a basecoat! I love that part. >.> I need to get one of those little lazy susan things on a stand so I can spin them around as I go…we used them in my ceramics class at uni to spray on glazes. Very handy. Esp. since the paint seems to dry slower with the airbrush medium in it…
Edit : Dick Blick has them! They’re called Amaco No.5 Decorating Wheels. I think they’d be handy for anyone painting PYOs, not just airbrushers, though!
You don’t have to go to Dick Blick, I use a cake decorating one…$12 at Michaels, in the cake section.
As for airbrush, I like to lay down the base coat, and also once you get used to layering on colors, you can paint a dragon pretty darn fast…but for details, I still prefer to hand paint. The kirin I just did for you only has the base color airbrushed.
Oh btw! We found her other eye! Yay, I won’t have to ask for a replacement…that helps!

September 13, 2008 at 12:16 pm #670150I can’t wait to see how this one turns out, kitsunelady. Which type of agate are you basing it on?

Haha. Just something I made up in my head. XD I wanted it to be blues and grays and blacks. I just like that “pattern” of close-together stripes, not necessarily a specific color or anything…right now, he’s just got a base of a kind of sparkly white. I drew the outline for the pattern on with a pencil, and then filled it in with blue interference. The current top color is a light silvery blue. =) Not sure how many “layers” I’m going to give it, since I already like it the way it is, haha. I’m considering using a marker to draw some really thin lines on, but am not sure how that would hold up when I glazed him.
Thanks for the advice Kyrin. =) The little dragon actually intimidates me. All those nooks and crannies, ugh. x_X That and base coats will be my main use for the airbrush. =D Unless I actually develop some skill with it…hee.
I’m glad you found the eye! XD
September 13, 2008 at 5:16 pm #670152He looks cool so far, I like the horn painted silver… looks pretty!
Man I can’t wait for my order to come in…September 13, 2008 at 6:32 pm #670153I like him so far (and gray eyes, my favorite :3)! And I love that silver horn. I’ve always been afraid to try and leaf over it, or paint over it @__@
September 13, 2008 at 6:42 pm #670154Nice start, looking forward to seeing more! 😀
September 13, 2008 at 11:57 pm #670155Well, it looks great so far, kitsune! Agates are some of my favorite stones….so many pretty varieties:)
Kujacker, I painted my kirin’s horn silver. I used a DecoColor paint pen and it came out nice.
Kitsune, what did you use to paint your kirin’s horn with? Anybody else paint theirs?
September 14, 2008 at 3:56 am #670156I did the same thing you did, lamortefille! =D I was really afraid to do it, too. You just bite the bullet and do it! The fact that mine was already nicked and cracking helped. The faster and thicker you get it on there, the smoother, since it settles a bit. I farted around with it too much, and now it looks more like brushed silver on mine. =| But I think if you pump the pen until it’s coming out in a steady flow, and then get it on there quick, it might turn out pretty smooth.
But, glad you guys like him so far! I finished the pattern on one side, and will take a picture when I’ve finished the other. I think he’ll look even better when I paint his fur. It’s going to be dark.
I also gave in and used a pen on him to draw some thin black lines. It’s permanent archival quality, so…we’ll see how it likes a glaze.
