Oh dear. This looks rather like the problem with the OW horns that was discussed in another thread. Since both the horns and the eggs are electroplated in gold, my guess would be that there’s a glitch at the company that’s been doing the electroplating. 🙁 I just went and looked at my brown Coiled Mum and I’m afraid her egg has a couple of corroded spots too. I had been thinking that this was a fairly recent problem, but there’s also a 1mm green spot on the horn of my BG Lap, and I got her fairly early on in the run of that color. Also, I know she didn’t have that spot when we lived in the desert, and we’ve only lived in this more humid area a couple of years. I really wonder if humidity aggravates the problem.
Electroplating is such a fiddly process, and Lord knows if there were even a tiny gap in the plating then the underlying metal would cheerfully corrode over time. I wish I knew what I could do to delay the process, though! We can’t exactly move back to the desert . . . much as I miss my sand and creosote bushes.
November 23, 2009 at 5:35 am #793658I think they said in the other thread you could get rid of it with a baking soda paste. 6.6
November 23, 2009 at 11:27 am #793659Wouldn’t it just come back? 😕

That would be my assumption…so maybe you could seal it up so no more air could get at it after cleaning it off. I have no idea how to gold leaf (my mental image is ‘put down some sticky stuff, attach gold leaf’), but isn’t there something you put over it…? Maybe that would work. o.o;
November 23, 2009 at 10:32 pm #793661Yar! Never seen that happen before! 😮
November 23, 2009 at 11:05 pm #793662green indicates the presence of copper. though it will come off with baking soda and a toothbrush, it will return, as metal objects containing copper require regular polishing to keep the shiny finish. Is this happening in the newer pieces? or older ones?

In my case new one. I have two of the coiled mothers and they are both that way. Straight from the factory. 🙁
PS: didn’t recognize you there purplecat with that avatar…lol
Maybe I should change mine and messup people 😈November 23, 2009 at 11:26 pm #793664ah, sorry….I’m rarely here anymore, and realized i didnt have one at all! then had to upload somethin right fast, cause missing one would bug me. 😳
yeah, I’ve read a bit and it’s almost definately the presence of copper….as turning green is pretty specific to that metal. I can only guess that copper was mixed in with the gold resulting in this, making it a problem that cant actually be fixed on the problem pieces…other than regular cleaning.
Very frustrating, and somewhat disappointing. Thankfully I’m only seeing small signs of this on a couple of my pieces, though I’ll really get upset if it starts happening on my secret keeper.
November 23, 2009 at 11:40 pm #793665But Secret Keepers haven’t got anything gold-plated on them, so it shouldn’t?
Here’s something on sealing copper to keep it from oxidizing –

Maybe you could mask off around the egg with some paper and give that spot a little spray with the Permalac they mention?
November 23, 2009 at 11:59 pm #793666ah, I had to go look at her, I was picturing her with old warrior horns… *facepalm* Has there been any incidences of this on claws or places where gold was “painted” on ? I’m not here as often so I may have missed it if it came up. And is the painted gold supposed to be real gold as well? I forgot.
November 24, 2009 at 12:11 am #793667Ah, baking soda paste! Thanks, kitsunelady, I had forgotten about that. Regarding sealing the site: I wonder if anyone at the factory has experimented with shellac or Permalac on the electroplated items? I wouldn’t mind doing something to protect the “weak spots” but I wonder if there’s any risk of creating a new problem. :shrug:

I’m wondering about the same thing 😕
November 24, 2009 at 12:21 am #793669usually putting any sort of clearcoat over a real metal will change the shine of it…..making it seem somewhat duller. I remember playing with chrome with my son a couple years back and learnin about that…I also got clearcoat on my wedding ring a few times which had to be scrubbed off because of that as well.
