My last 2 cents! (I promise. For at least 30 minutes).
Most laps, emps, etc are painted by production painters. Grab bags are painted exclusively by Melody. Melody’s work is generally priced higher because the pieces are unique, signed, more detailed, and the base cost of her painting is higher.
However, if you want to do a linear pricing of Melody’s laps and emps that are special, the price of the smaller pieces go up a lot.
We do need to compare apples to apples here. Mass produced production pieces are not the equivalent pricing structure to unique pieces from Melody.
April 30, 2013 at 7:52 pm #896590I agree witn Kiya. I’d much prefer Windstone gets a larger portion of the profit from selling Melody’s work. $300 is steep, I know, but I’ve been trying to buy a candy corn since I found the website last December and have lost out to the high prices (which someone pays!). So $300 is not unreasonable. I’ve only seen one grab bag baby unicorn go for less than $200 on ebay (and that was a natural from the last batch) – that means the resellers are getting a minimum of $70 profit from the original purchase (I realize with trading alot of resellers are reflecting their cost in trade goods). More of that should be in the artist’s pocket – its only fair. If we can’t affort it, we can’t afford it, but you know someone will….
AS for preferences, I vote for the supernatural, candy ‘corns, etc, etc, etc. Melody – go wild! or not as the spirit moves you. After all, these may be the last youngs for long time….
April 30, 2013 at 8:08 pm #896594Just curious … in your calculations, what is your base price for the little pieces (baby unicorn, baby kirin, baby Poad, and so forth)? It must be very low if you have $200 for a lap and $300 for an emperor as part of a linear increase in price.
I would go by store price which are all under $100 and I’m going by store price for the larger pieces….I just can’t see paying $300+ for something much smaller than than the large pieces regardless of if they are handpainted or not…..
4 things I'm looking for:
1. Mother Meerkat
2. production color Sitting Young Oriental dragons to be made in more colors besides VF, Brimstone would be awesome!
3. Female Griffin – Siamese with White
4. September Raffle Prize 2022 AHD Male GriffinApril 30, 2013 at 8:31 pm #896596Whatever Windstone decides to price the grab bags at will be fine with me. I can’t say if I would be able to afford one (or choose to purchase one) or not, but that is not the company’s problem. It’s mine. Melody’s pieces are worth far, far more to me than a production piece.
April 30, 2013 at 8:35 pm #896597Personally, I would LOVE to see a batch of safari or supernatural! 😀
April 30, 2013 at 8:44 pm #896602My preference for the GB young batch would be normal safari and “supernatural” colors and patterns. Those paint-puke ones do nothing for me. 😛
As for the price, as steep as $300 sounds, I have to agree with Kiya. Grab bag unicorns have definitely proven themselves to be a good investment; even if you get one you don’t like, you can either trade it or sell it to someone who probably loves it, without losing money.
Hey, at least if they are priced high they won’t sell out in less than a minute!
April 30, 2013 at 9:09 pm #896605besides resell can’t be a factor, there’s always people who will pay anything to get what they want on ebay despite how high it goes…..
Agreed, it seems the latest batch havent been reselling for much more than $200 anyway. I’ve seen 2 end less than $200.
I would personally prefer to see natural horse colours- not only because they’re my favourite but also because they’re simpler and may keep prices more reasonable for most of us.
April 30, 2013 at 9:10 pm #896606I’d love to see anything but paint pukes–not exactly my cup of tea. Safari, ‘soft fantasy’ or a fantasy batch like the lichens, would be lovely.
That being said, Seems I might be well out of my budget, but I love to look at them even if I won’t be able to afford one.
April 30, 2013 at 9:15 pm #896607Again, I’m not a decision maker in pricing (or even an inputter!) So these might end up much closer to the previous batch. I really have no idea. 🙂 My opinion and about $7 will buy you some Starbucks. 🙂

yey! someone agrees with me!

I’m not arguing it would be fairer. However, the market can clearly support it so Windstone has very little motivation (other than altruism?) to price something for much less than they could sell it for otherwise.
The difference between 90 unicorns at $200 and 90 unicorns at $300 is roughly $9,000. That’s approximately $450 per employee at Windstone – or more than a week’s pay for many of them.
So…
1.) The market would support $300/each (especially in a small batch)
2.) It’s still less than the price of getting a young from Windstone on ebay OR buying one second handAgain – not a decider in the pricing. BUT, this is a luxury item and Windstone is a business. If they price the piece in such a way that they make more money AND it still sells – then there is very little to discourage them from doing so.
April 30, 2013 at 9:30 pm #896611Would you take a $9,000 pay cut without a clear reason? 🙂

…but what if they do raise the price and oh the people that can afford it buy some….then the others who are priced out don’t so there’s youngs not getting bought….eventually if the prices rise enough, this will happen….does Windstone really want to alienate people and perhaps drive some of them away?

Eventually, yes, but we’re no where near that point, IMO. Especially with a batch of 90.
Again – this is a rather empty debate as I don’t set the pricing and have no input. The $300 was a purely theoretical number and what I would do if I were in charge. 🙂
