I had a little momma cat once and she would bring poor half dead critters to the door so she could train her kittens to hunt. That in of itself is a little disturbing, but not as disturbing as me opening the door for her to let her in the house and then finding her sitting there, very proudly, with the hind quarters of a rabbit laying at her feet π― ! I have no idea how she killed a rabbit. She was a tiny cat, and the rabbit, or what was left of it, was almost as big as she was π― !
October 16, 2008 at 2:01 pm #736469π There’s a word in German for cats: Stubentiger, or living room tiger. It’s a good name for some of them – like yours, purpleturtle.

Cats are very efficient predators. They have a natural bacteria that occurs in their saliva and under their claws that causes a very fast infection in many animals, and it is particularly deadly to birds and small animals. Even the ones that ‘get away’ often end up dying within 48 hours if they’ve been bitten or scratched by a cat.
Cats are also really good at taking out animals that are as big as they are, and sometimes even bigger.
It’s why- unless you live in the country and need a farm cat- I really think cats belong indoors.

Sometimes even bigger… yeah… like two kittens winning in a fight against a full grown rottie…. Spice would sit behind the dog, and Sugar would swipe and swat and smack at his face… the dog would be so worried about Spice that he wouldn’t pay enough attention to Sugar and eventually ran away… and this happened more then once! π
I think cats belong inside too, but my parents would let the animals out from time to time.
October 16, 2008 at 6:54 pm #736474Here in the city kitties belong inside but occasional outings on a leash are allowed
October 16, 2008 at 8:03 pm #736475We have coyotes where I live, the kitties need to be inside for their protection. My Akira Boo sneaks out and it is my greatest fear that something will eat him. He’s my favorite and he lacks common sense about animals larger than he is.

Sun Dragon Koi #3October 16, 2008 at 10:12 pm #736476All of my cats are indoor cats. Growing up in the boonies, we lost alot of cats, mostly to predators, some hit by cars and others to parasites they get from consuming wildlife. Our outdoor kitties would kill sooo much wildlife. Can’t be upset for a cat doing that, that’s thier instinct, but it still was heartbreaking to find little dead birds and what not. When I was little I actually had a cat-killed graveyard. My cats stay indoors. They are safe and the birds and squirrles in my yard appreciate it.
October 16, 2008 at 11:50 pm #736477My neighbor lets their cat just wander all over, and he loves to attack the birds. We’ve lost many birds this way. Any time I see him, I scare him off. One night, I got him square with the hose right across the top of his body (didn’t want to hit him in the eyes, since he was sitting, facing my direction). π Someday, I may just put some food coloring and water in a squirt gun though. Something very vibrant and noticeable. I love cats, but unless you have a need for a barn cat, they just do too much damage to wildlife, since many times they aren’t killing for food, just because they have the instinct to do so, or for fun. Dogs can do this too… my dad used to work on a turkey farm that had problems with a neighborhood dog, pet, that snuck into a turkey farm he worked at when he was young. The neighbor was warned and he didn’t care about tethering his dog. After he killed over $2000 in turkeys in about 15 minutes, needless to say, the dog didn’t get away far. Owner didn’t care and the dog just killed for the fun of it. Bad combination. *shakes head*
October 17, 2008 at 5:19 am #736478The trouble with indoor cats is that they don’t care about anything other than getting outside. Ours sit around all day and meow at the door–sometimes, when they’re really desperate, they’ll jump up and try to push the handle… It’s a bit depressing, really. I believe in indoor-outdoor cats, but at the California house we had to keep ours in because of dogs and coyotes. Now that we’re at the Oregon house, if we let them outside, they go exploring and then come back and beg to be let in again so they can go to the bathroom. XD Our cats are so domestic they can’t even poop outside a litter box.

My cats have always been indoors only (at least as long as they’ve been with me), and they don’t give a rip about going outside. Although on a really nice day in the summer, they may ask. But they know what the answer is. They sit in the windows and enjoy the outside, watch the squirrels, the birdfeeder, the rabbits and chipmunks. It’s like they have pets or a show. If another cat comes in the yard, Claire screams at him/her to leave her pets alone. And then we go out and chase the cat away. Things might change once she’s gone. Merlin doesn’t seem to care if another cat is in the yard, so we’ll see. Tasha’d probably invite him/her in for a game.
October 17, 2008 at 1:52 pm #736481I have 6 cats…Of those 6, one goes out(Sugar), but she doesn’t leave the back sidewalk which is only 15 ft long. Old Butt (Amadeus, he’s 16) tries his best to sneak out, but as he has aged his balance isn’t the best and he isn’t so slick anymore. If the door isn’t open for more than a minute there isn’t one cat who tries. The one stray I have (Pretty Gurl) meows at the door, but then when I open it she runs away from it and deeper into the house. She was declawed in the front and is a very pretty girl. π Sweet and kind, I still don’t understand why anyone would have abandoned her. My guess is she was some elderly lady’s cat and maybe she passed away and the kids thought to let her loose and someone would take her in. *shrugs* I dunno, but she loves Glen and I, is not feral in anyway, and purrs the loudest of all, and will always have a home with me. Sylvester, my baby, who I swear wishes he was human, or that I was a cat, stands in the doorway and looks out but never tries to get out. He can say “Momma” and prefers to be in the bathroom with me when I shower, and waits for me by the front door when I am gone. π And not to mention he is spoiled rotten! π Charlie and Dot could care less about outside…They are content to spend time behind the screens and looking out the glass. In other words, all 6 are in the house, which makes for some interesting “Kat Tag” games and arguments at times. π π π
(Oh yeah…13 year old kids with nothing but time to waste are great for chores…Glen gets litter box duty daily to keep it clean for them. π π π )October 17, 2008 at 2:11 pm #736482emerald212 wrote:My cats have always been indoors only (at least as long as they’ve been with me), and they don’t give a rip about going outside. Same here. :} I’ve lived with (or some may say been owned by!) 5 cats over the years, and they were all content inside. Only one of them ever wanted out (she was a stray we found outside) so we’d take her out on a harness from time to time… she’d get her fill of being outside pretty quick, and get grumpy and want back in. XD I am confused by the reasoning of “they want outside!”… my two huskies want outside all the time, but I’d never let them run loose. They’d cause all sorts of grief and kill animals. They, like the cats, get outside time on a lead and seem content with that. π
