Gorgeous work! I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work.
July 12, 2014 at 6:39 pm #915506Very nice! I painted an orange dragon for the swap and although I am not usally fond of orange, I think it looks really good on these pyos.
Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!

I agree! Though I’m rather fond of orange in any case, the bright cheerfulness of it brings out the playful nature of the sculpts (I saw yours too, very fun!)
July 12, 2014 at 11:47 pm #915509Very nice!!! My first PYO looked like the incredible hulk… and not in a good way! LOL! They are very different then painting ceramics. Great job!

Thank you very much! Hah, not like ceramics at all indeed, though not unlike painting D&D miniatures which I used to do a lot in college (admittedly I never reached the level of it you see with some of the more amazing examples people do, but I could generally get the eyes pointing in the right directions, hah). It’s nice not to have to work so small!
(BTW I love love your work and your repairs are just amazing!)
July 13, 2014 at 4:06 am #915511Wow, congratulations! You finished this so quickly and it came out looking so nice.
July 18, 2014 at 2:53 am #915725AnonymousWow I didn’t think I’d rave about an orange scheme like this! May I ask what was the name of the paint colors you used?
You’ve got a great grasp on color layers for a first PYO, though if you’d like to reduce the “mess” on first layering is to prime your sculpt first with Golden Titanium white (because gypsum can be more absorbent in some areas and thus take more color than intended) and use Medium (I use Golden airbrush medium but GAC 100 works too) for thinning paint for washes (water is generally bad for thinning paint because it stretches the plastic molecules of acrylic risking peeling years later or easy scratching).
July 18, 2014 at 4:58 pm #915740Oh man I just finished painting up the details and I am so happy with this. Just needs a clear coat and the eyes and pad added now! I’ll get better photos that show off the iridescent scale details when it’s completed. Hm… needs a name too I suppose.
That’s a lovely job with the orange koi markings. I like the gradation along the kirin’s sides and the detailing on the flanks. Very nice. Congratulations!

Thank you very kindly! The specific paints I used are:
Maimeri Titanium White
Liquitex Cadmium Red Medium Hue
Maimeri Permanent Orange
Pebeo DYNA Iridescent Orange Yellow
Liquitex Iridescent Rich Gold
Liquitex Iridescent Bright Silver
Creamcoat Gloss Interior VarnishI’ve been buying Maimeri over Liquitex at my local art shop as my colors run out (Dots and Doodles) because they run a bit cheaper and I’ve had no issues with their quality for what I generally do. I’ve really been enjoying some of Pebo’s other specialty lines and I thought I would give these a shot, and I was not disappointed! It’s quite different from the interference paint, but the shimmer is still very nice. Cat is trying some on his Foo also, I’ll post that when it’s farther along.
Very interesting to know! I’m not used to using mediums, since I like to work fast and they seem to tend to retard the drying rate (even if it’s not a retarder), but I will give it a go next time depending on what I have in mind.

Male Hearth....one day🤞Dream on.July 22, 2014 at 3:16 am #916018Congrats on your first! The color orange definitely doesn’t get enough love =)
The Pebo ‘DYNA’ paints are not quite like Golden’s interference paints (they have a base color and do not become milky when applied heavily, however because of the colored body they do not wash as easily), but their effect is very shiny and pretty.
Maybe you know this, but in case you didn’t, if you dilute the Golden Interference color before you apply it with something like GAC, or airbrush extender, or water, you shouldn’t get a milky effect.

Yup, I’m familiar, and the interference looks lovely when applied properly, but these (which are a different range of colors) also look good but can be applied like regular acrylic, opaquely if desired. It’s a different effect overall, but also shimery. I wouldn’t think one would replace the other, just that they’re good for two different kinds of effect.
November 12, 2014 at 9:09 pm #921728Alrighty, it took a while but Cat did finish up his Foo Dad! This is not at all my work, just his, but he wanted to show off what he did too. Both of us work differently, so I can’t give much comment on it, but here’s his first PYO:
November 12, 2014 at 9:25 pm #921729I got a surprise (very much a surprise) Windstone Paint Your Own for my birthday. This time one of the adorable little kitty gryphons. Because the eyes and gem color were not my choice this time, I tried to go with something that matched them. I’m really happy with how this guy came out, I think I’ll call him Nankeen (after the Nankeen Kesteral… which the colors arn’t really based on but bear with me.)
November 12, 2014 at 10:08 pm #921732Both are very cute. I like the Kitty Griff’s stripes. And what was the inspiration for the Foo?
