If you havent seen already there is a family of ‘black dragon’ repaints on Ebay. The hatchling has major damage. They are all painted in some kind of matte black paint. I usually LIKE black Windstones but these look terrible…
December 5, 2011 at 2:45 pm #864477Poor babies! I would seriously buy these. Not because I like them… but to give them a facelift. They need some color love.
Is anyone here going for them? Drag0n? Hannah? Kyrin? If so, then I’ll just pass them by.
December 5, 2011 at 3:11 pm #864481Did you see this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAT-BAG-WINDSTONE-EDITIONS-/200684551650?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb9bb3de2
The seller says: “IT DOES SHOW A LITTLE WEAR ON THE PAINT BUT CAN BE TOUCHED UP VERY EASILY I HAVE SEEN THIS ITEM BRING AS MUCH AS $150 AT ANTIQUE AUCTIONS SO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS GREAT BUY”. Can be touched up very easily???? EWW!! When is the last time a paper tiger sold for $150 (especially one that doesn’t have much paint left)?December 5, 2011 at 5:52 pm #864490I reported the black ones to John, and here is his reply:
I don’t really know for sure but they look like they were painted at Windstone. There looks to be some color peeking through the mother’s black but they look like they were spray painted, and before the pads were put on. As they are in So. Cal. I am going to guess that they may be some seconds that an employee received from us or something like that. Could be that we painted them black as a test to see what they would look like in black. All that is just a guess so it also could be that they were re-painted, but it doesn’t look like they were done with a brush.
So maybe they are “ok”?
December 5, 2011 at 6:07 pm #864491Sounds like they could POSSIBLY be treasures! Whoever gets them is going to need to inspect them extra closely.
December 5, 2011 at 6:12 pm #864492I will second john’s assessment. The pads definitely look like they were put on after the dragons were painted.
December 5, 2011 at 6:24 pm #864494I like them, actually, but only just as they are still monotone. But in some photos it looks like different colored blacks were used to give a type of depth.
December 5, 2011 at 8:13 pm #864506Uh … it is possible those are original. We did a tiny batch of jet black dragons for one store that begged us for them. I don’t remember what color jewels we used, but the paint on those dragons looks original. You can see how the paint goes under the pads on the big dragons, and see how messy it is on the bottom of the hatchling?… exactly the way we did them!
It is possible these are the very rare black ones.. I think we did 6 solid black, and 6 black and tan ones for that store. However, for a short time we did paint the bottoms of the colored dragons black, so it could be possible that this is a pair of repainted-black-bottomed ones.
I think the store that bought the black dragons was in Pasadena, California. I wonder where these came from?December 5, 2011 at 8:30 pm #864510One thing though: the hatchling’s jewel is a different color than the male’s and mother’s…

http://windstoneeditions.com/forum/can-someone-verify-dragon-1980sThis is an old thread from a collector with a solid black male. It has orange eyes, purple jewels, and very sparse gold detailing. The black color has a purple tint. The owner was told by the shop she bought is from that only 5 were made. A second collector in the same thread also has a black male, but with blue eyes, purple, green, and blue tinting, and more extensive detailing in gold, blue, and purple.

There are few different versions of these blackish test paints that we sold. There are at least two sets of blackish colored ones with a little bit of color on them.
I remember that when we brought the black ones into the store that wanted them, a man bought a female dragon while we were there. He was very excited about it being just solid jet black. (I thought they were hideous, but then, I thought the black-and-tan ones were really pretty and they didn’t sell at all! So what do I know.)
December 5, 2011 at 9:36 pm #864521on that mother dragon it sure looks like it was a old brown one painted over, there is some color coming through on the wings and front leg. best of luck to whoever gets them… keep us updated!
December 5, 2011 at 9:46 pm #864523Oh wow! That’s really cool! 🙂
December 5, 2011 at 10:00 pm #864526I suppose these could be original, but they don’t have the usual detailing. They don’t have metallic toenails (all of the other Windstones I’ve seen had at least different colored toenails, if not metallic), there are no gold markings on the ridges, etc. They do, however, seem to show something *through* the black. I thought maybe old brown, but then the eyes would be blue. Maybe old green? In any case, to me, black does not appear to be the original color. The texture of the paint actually screams black spray paint to me. I don’t think they’re ugly, as Wampus does, but I don’t think they’re particularly beautiful, though.
December 5, 2011 at 10:57 pm #864537I’d get them if I had the funds, but I currently have 2 males & 2 females that need serious fixing to play with here. Since Browns & Old greens in those sculpts don’t seem to go for much, I am wondering if I should bother to restore them to original or not. Might just fix them & wait to see if I can get permission to repaint them. They are very beat up, the females will need almost complete reconstruction of their wings.
