She was snotty to me too when I broached the subject of Water’s paintjobs. She asked if I didn’t have anything better to do with my time. π―
Nope, I reserve my time to harrass people who seem to think they need to copy everyone else’s ideas because they aren’t creative enough to come up with a few of their own. π π
It’s flattering for someone to enjoy your works, but only annoying to have them copied over and over again. πΏ
I hope no one is silly enough by now to buy any of her “Copies”. πI agree, it is flattering, but then why wouldnt you just ask the artist if its ok to paint something that kinda resembles it, RATHER than flat out STEAL it from someone πΏ …I wouldnt BUY anything from her…not to be rude…but it doesnt LOOK profesional to me for one, looks like a kid painted them. **SORRY** maybe I should have kept that to myself…but EVERYONE has an imagination….USE IT! πΏ π I REALLY think she should have thought this out more thouroughly before she started. π π
July 24, 2007 at 5:22 pm #602959Slightly OT… but still related…
I’ve been wondering something along these lines… and I’ve meant to post about it… but now’s as good a time as any… to attach it to this discussion… π
Years ago… I created a race of Unicorns… and based on mythology… “eyewitness” accounts and what not… I set about designing them…
I took the tails of a “tri-colored” horn… white at the base… black in the center… and tipped with red blood… and added the coloration of an Okapi.
I chose Okapis because they were once considered “mythical” creatures themselves… no one believed the “short necked giraffe” existed… until someone stumbled on the solitary Okapi in the forests of Africa. π
Not to mention… Giraffes… AND Okapis can have a “bump” in the center of their foreheads… yes they also have two “horns” but it’s the center bump that intrigues me… ^.^
And so my Okapi Unicorns were created!
Here is the only pic of one I drew that I have uploaded… I must have deleted the others. π
http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/l/m/lmtapley/mascot1.jpg.html
And here’s another creature… created by a friend of mine… that I drew… ^.^
http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/l/m/lmtapley/pahllock.gif.html
Anywho… These are my babies… I’ve always loved them… I had them coming in all colors… not just the russett brown and black hind quarters…
But what I’m curious about… is should I worry, that if I decide to sell the PYO Unicorn I paint like this… that I’ll get copycats too?
I’ve always been really protective of these unicorns… I want to put them out ther ein the world… and yet… I feel like they are my brainchild… (I mean I didn’t just decide to slap the color and pattern of an Okapi on a unicorn… I actually put some thought into why they might resemble/be related to Okapis)…and should stay that way… for fear of someone making good on my idea… you know?
I dunno if I’m making any sense… but any other opinions would be greatly appreciated!
If I should sell the Okapi Unicorn PYO I paint… or if I should just keep her? or just keep teh first one… then paint one to sell… etc…
π Flustered over here. π Oh well!
July 24, 2007 at 5:31 pm #602960Cali is soooo adorable! I can see why you are protective of her. Hopefully no one will rip off your idea….
July 24, 2007 at 5:33 pm #602961With creating anything there’s always a risk that someone will copy it. It’s like when we decided to sell Fairy Fossils or created the Elevation Indicator (see my website for information on both of this things). We didn’t know how many people would try to do the same thing, and if we would be able to catch/stop them. But they are things we (my husband really) created and believed in. And we wanted to share them with the world, so we did it. Granted, we have legal legs to stand on if someone tries to copy our items, but it’s still a risk because we may not know about the copies right away.
I say, if you love something and you want to share it with the world, you should. If people copy you, it will never be true to your vision anyway because it’s a copy of your vision, and copies are never as clear as the original. π And people who have to copy and can’t come up with their own ideas are never going to be as talented as the person who first created it. Otherwise they’d come up with their own ideas.
July 24, 2007 at 5:51 pm #602962AGREED Emerald! π
AND WOW!!! I LOVE your unicorn! I would LOVE to have one JUST like it on a Windstone! BUT…they are right, if you decide to do them and sell them without the idea copyrighted..which I dont think you can do on a already copyrighted figurine…that there is ALWAYS the chance for a “copycat”. If you were to do them, I would say LEAVE them off of Ebay, and sell them to those here on the forum you KNOW would appreciate them and cherish them without the worry of that. I PERSONALLY would LOVE to have one! I would also..just my opinion, those who do get one, if you choose that route, keep the pictures of them off of the internet…but again…like the old saying goes…
“Opinions are like a*&holes, EVERYONES got one!!” LOL π― π π
But that is what I think. But as far as “your” idea for “your” creation…get her copyrighted and continue with your idea of a store and create your OWN pieces. They would be a SMASH HIT! I have that feeling! π π
July 24, 2007 at 6:06 pm #602963July 24, 2007 at 6:25 pm #602964I love Cali! I can see her embroidered on tank tops and sweatshirts. This isn’t expensive to do. I think you should get about 20 test shirts done and sell them. I think you would be surprised how many people would buy one. I would love a sweatshirt!
As for the copyright… I don’t know. She looks like a horse head and body with okapi markings. So it does seem original as I’ve never seen one. The question comes down to, how hard would you be willing to fight for it?
It would be easy for someone to take your idea, but it’s a lot harder to copy the drawing style. I could sit here and draw one of those, but it would never have the same character as Cali.
It’s different painting a Windstone PYO as an okapi is different though as it’s a natural occuring animal marking and therefore left open for anyone to try. How many tiger griffs have we seen?

This is very true. There have been okapi kirins already, and I’m sure someone will paint a PYO unicorn like one at some point. A coloration that occurs on a real animal belongs to everyone. π

I’m glad this was brought up. LadyBrooklyn, if someone does an Okapi PYO unicorn it doesn’t necessarily mean they copied you. It could be coincidence. Case in point. I had briefly considered painting a PYO unicorn as an Okapi when they first released the sculpt. And remember, I’ve never seen a picture of your Okapi-Unicorn-Pegasis before today.
I think it’s pretty common for people to want to paint wild hoofed animal patterns on the PYOs. People have already done a Zebra and a Quagga pattern on a PYO unicorn. And if it wasn’t for my sister being adamant about getting a Okapi Kirin instead of a Okapi unicorn, I would have followed through with that idea.
By the way, your drawing is lovely, LB. And I’m sure your Okapi unicorn will be too.
July 24, 2007 at 8:06 pm #602967DragonsCavern wrote:**EDIT**Well it seems that someone aparently liked my idea of my “Spirit Wolves” I am really glad to see that they are liked and truly was a GREAT idea….This person, not sure if its a forum member, but they did have a pretty good idea for the war paint designs I think…thought you all might like to take a look, although the wings look too much like the very last one I did. Which both so far are proudly owned by the same person π
I hope this isnt taken the wrong way π― ….I am actually flattered by this π³ BUT, I was reminded by a special member that read this new post of mine…and with Water’s previous problem with this member, I am really NOT sure how to take this and am VERY CURIOUS OF THIS situation….I dunnno…what do you guys think of all this??? Here is the link, and PLEASE let me know what you all think. It seems to me that this person is the same that tried posting pictures of Waters to sell it and when they got in trouble for it resorted to picking things that looked some what easy to paint and trying to copy them and sell them which..
I think your spirit wolves look much better then that..
July 24, 2007 at 8:36 pm #602968greywolfspirtwalker just bought a pyo wolf. Can we assume this will be the next to be copied?
I recognize the paintjob, but can’t remember who painted it. It looks like a pastel piece and not many use that technique.July 24, 2007 at 9:20 pm #602969Thanks for your thoughts guys!
I can’t believe you all like Cali so much! She was a hit years ago… and apparently still is… π Though I think my drawing looks old and crude! π Then again… as an artist… I’m my own worst critic…
Heck… ALL of the drawings in that gallery make me CRINGE!!! π
Anywho… I think I will do the Okapi… and soon… and probably keep her off of ebay… that way the main body of people who see her are here… rather than the whole world. π Then we’ll see what happens from there. π
Until then… I’ve already painted my Eohippus resin in the Okapi pattern… twas fun! π

Doing Piki really inspired me. I ordered a unicorn for the very purpose of doing another okapi PYO. When I did Piki, I had totally forgotten that Ruffian had done an okapi-based kirin before… here I thought I was being an original…
So, no! I won’t be copying you when I actually get to paint my okapi unicorn.
