I have an injured Lap Dragon whom I’m going to try to repair! Her head damage is scary-looking, but I think I have most of the pieces; the real trouble is the ding in her wing, which I will have to rebuild. It’s a small wound – we’re talking maybe a quarter-inch long, and not very deep! I kind of hate to buy a full-size tub of Apoxie when I know I’m going to use, like, a half a gram of it. Storage is already a problem in my life, and I hardly have a spare ounce of space to cram craft supplies in (I have a bunch in my rented storage facility, in fact. Along with Windstones.)
So! Does anyone know if Apoxie or their parent company sells sample-size or one-job amounts? I just need to fix a nick, not build a whole new body part!
(Tomorrow I’ll try to update with pictures of the damage, so I can post progress shots as I work! Just gotta go buy some superglue, as somebody in the household has misplaced it and isn’t fessing up.)
UPDATE: Photos!
First, the damage: yikes!
After gluing:
I was dumb and didn’t try fitting the pieces together first before gluing (I was afraid of bits getting banged together and falling apart), so once I got the big chunk with the horn embedded in I realized too late that some of the lower pieces extended up under the horn piece! *facepalm* I had to file down the backs of those so they could fit. Then I dropped the last little flake and couldn’t find it anywhere! So there’s a white spot on her face I’ll have to fix.
Still, she looks so much better with her horn back in position! The face spot and the wing chip are all that still need fixing, and my apoxie came a couple days ago, so I’m all set to try it! *gulp*

September 6, 2015 at 12:19 am #934294That sounds perfect, size-wise! Thanks for confirming. 😀
Actually there is a much much smaller pack you can get, let me see if i can find a link cuz i have some in the tiny size.
EDIT, and the 1/10 a pound is actually the one you want, its about 1.5 oz total and beeing two part it is split in two, each tub is about a little bigger than a quater and maybe 1/2 inch tall, so it the pefect small amount and if you store it in the freezer it pretty much lasts forever. I myself end up buying the four lb tubs but thays cuz i do regular repairs and lots of sculpting with it.

September 15, 2015 at 12:23 am #934468A slight update: Ordered the Apoxie on the 8th, so it should be here soon! (I’m a little surprised it’s not here yet, honestly, considering what they charge for shipping.)
I’ve gotten the big pieces glued into place with Superglue, and the only places Apoxie will be needed is on the chip on the arch of her left wing, and a small spot on her face (I DROPPED the chip that went there, argh! And I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE despite looking on my hands and knees and running my hands all over the carpet and brushing down my clothes and everything! So frustrating.)

My apoxie arrived, but thanks to a wedding in the family I haven’t had a spare second to sit down and experiment with it yet!

October 5, 2015 at 9:22 pm #935473Apoxie time! Boy, this stuff is frustratingly hard to deal with in small places. D: I’m completely out of practice, too — used to use it back in my model horse days, but that’s been so long!
Pics of her resculpted facial scale and wing curve:

October 5, 2015 at 9:29 pm #935476Now it’s time to play with paint!
Thank goodness her broken areas are primarily a single color, and she didn’t break right at a dramatic blending. 🙂 Fortunately, I have a lot of metallic paints in the green-blue-purple range, but of course it’s hard to tell what they really look like in the bottle! So I did a little testing, first.
Trying to figure out what paints I have that might match:
Applying a couple layers of the blue that seems closest:
Not a bad match! I’ll have to do some blending and shading on top of it, and then I’m going to try contacting Windstone to see if they can send me one of the markers they use for the gold points, as I’ve seen other repairmakers do, so I can touch up her little gold dashes along the wing edge and repair her “beauty mark”. So only two more steps, hurrah!

October 6, 2015 at 1:46 am #935499Thanks! But don’t sell yourself short, Betrluk! Frankly, it’s looking much better than I thought I could pull off! 😀 So you just might surprise yourself if you ever do take a stab at it…

October 6, 2015 at 11:22 am #935529Great job so far! You wouldn’t know the poor thing had the horn sheered off! Yeah Windstone sent me a couple of the gold paint pens as they don’t sell them at my local Michael’s now and I couldn’t find them anywhere. They had just enough gold left in them to touch up a few pieces. I should warn you though, I tried using one directly on the edge of a dragon wing once and pressed it a bit too hard and the gold paint leaked all over the wing. I couldn’t get it off so I had to repaint the wing and then ended up sending it with some other pieces to get repaired by someone who had the same emerald paint. So since then I have just dabbed some of the gold paint pen on a paintbrush and used the paintbrush to touch up spots on my pieces. A warning though that the gold paint does not like to come off clothes, pallets or paint brushes very easily so be careful with it!
Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!

Thanks for the tip! That’s a good idea to use a paintbrush.

January 17, 2016 at 1:01 am #940056At long last, I managed to sit down and tinker with this repair project a bit more!
New pics, showing the much-improved paint-blending work:

Now I just need to add the gold bits back on, and this dragon ought to be able to pass for new, at least from a reasonable viewing distance! 🙂

January 17, 2016 at 5:50 am #940075She looks great! Nice work on the face especially 🙂 And good colour matching!
lol, that Apoxie stuff really is irritating in itty bitty pieces, isn’t it? I sometimes have to use tools rather than my fingers to get tiny bits started, or it just sticks to my fingers.

Thank you! I did the gold trim tonight, so I’ll post those pictures tomorrow.
It really is tricky in tiny amounts! I gave up on my big blunt fingers and wrangled it with toothpicks, which worked pretty well.

January 20, 2016 at 1:19 am #940199Aaaaaaaaaaaand finished!
The “regolding” went well, and now both sides match once more!

I feel very accomplished! There’s a lot I could have done better, and perhaps one day I’ll go back and rework it a bit – the facial rebuilding left some rough textures that mar the paint, which annoys me and looks sloppy. Beyond that, however, I’m pretty satisfied!
