      I FAIL!

      >_< There is a thing going on at work for 2 catagories. Guys and Girls. Most percentage lost in a 6 week peroid gets $100 cash. Nice incentive to start wanting to do what I have been meaning to do for months....maybe YEARS! In the begining of the 3rd week now... I lost 3 pounds, then gained 2, now I'm right back where I started... FAIL! Anybody have some diet advice??? I've been TRYING to excercise, but I usually either forget or am too tired after work. I'm not terribly overweight, but I want to loose the love handles and shed some "apes" ( as* pound per square inch is what I call them ^_^ ) I have been on the saltenes and cream cheese diet and that worked for a day or two and my body found a way to just turn that back into fat too *sigh* I have quit soda and have stopped eating after 7pm and still no change x.x I just have no ambition... I have never been able to stay true to a diet for more then 2 days before cheating, but this time I have really tried!!! BAH!

Dude, drag0n, I am right there with you! I stepped on a scale 2 weeks ago and saw I weigh 155 X_X the last time I checked I was 145, and before that, for the longest time I was about 130/135. I had such sticker shock, I was motivated to try and loose those 25lbs. (living with a man DOES put on the pounds!!)

Last year I tried to diet too. I learned in my Anatomy and Physiology class that complex carbs are harder for your body to digest than simple sugars (makes sense, right?) and so, in working harder to break down these carbon chains, your body uses the energy as its getting it from the foods, and they don’t turn immediately into fat.

I went online and found a list of foods that have complex carbs, but here are some off the top of my head-lentils, barely, grapefruit, apples, pears, plums, yellow squash, zucchini, strawberries, soybeans/chickpeas, whole wheat items (bread and rice and flour) I bought whole grain pastas (at walmart, they’re not real expensive-even Krogers {if they have Krogers where you’re at} they put them on sale sometimes) and whole wheat flour (its used in slightly different portions than regular flour, it tells you on the label) and I made soups and stews with the beans, carrots, lentils, squash, and okra. If you like Indian foods, they have a lot of healthy stuff in them.

Here’s a link with a list of complex carbs
        http://howtothinkthin.com/instincts2.htm

A friend of mine eats a lot-but he’s really picky. He avoids anything with “Partially hydrogenated” and processed foods. He’s skin and bones but that boy EATS. He also says he does cardio-swimming (but other types would work too)

I tried that-I avoided processed foods for two or three weeks and I seriously started feeling better! I heard that milk helps you digest, so I started drinking a glass of milk right before bed. I FELT skinnier the next day.

I wasn’t even craving greasy foods and the plethora of sweets like I used to-but I think I went on vacation or something and shot that all to you-know-where.

This past week, Josh’s uncle in Tennesee was talking about this Apple Cider Vinegar. “The pounds just melt away! I lost about 40 pounds” he said. Everyone’s ears perked up and we all went “*head tilt* aroo?”
Yeah, this stuff, made by Bragg
        http://www.bragg.com/
supposedly is a wonder liquid. I found some in the health food section of Krogers, so Im sure that a standard groccery store should have it. It was $4.99 on sale for $3.99
        Apple Cider Vinegar
Josh’s uncle said he drank two table spoons with a tall glass of water every day. I went and got some yesterday. Word to the wise, DO NOT DRINK IT STRAIGHT! Unless you can stomache like-cheap vodka, moonshine or everclear or something. It burned so badly I drank half of the glass of water trying not to cough. Its aweful stuff! But its not so bad mixed in with water. Just drink it quick! This is day 2-I’ll let you know if it works.

Josh and I have also been walking around our apartment complex at night (too hot during the day) (or around the block would work too) and we’re running the last 1/4 of the trip. Its just long enough that I feel accomplished and energized, but not so long that you’re exhausted and miserable afterwards.

I also found that if you cook stuff at home, you know exactly what’s in it, so its easier to control your diet that way. Its a pain yes, but personally I feel better eating REAL vegetables, sugar, meat, milk etc. nothing fake or processed. Your body can digest the real stuff better. I found a delicious recipe for whole wheat chocolate chip cookies.

        SO, IN SUMMARY
        Complex carbs
        No processed foods/partially hydrogentated anything
        No high-fructose corn syrup
Whole wheat pasta, bread and rice
        Milk before bed
        Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar
        Cardio

Another piece of advice that I’ve used is that you need to “trick” your body. If you diet for a long period of time your body adjusts to it and it stops working, so what worked for me was to diet for 2-3 days then don’t for 2-3 days. Your body won’t know what’s going on and you’ll drop some pounds.
What I’ve been doing recently is the “Special K” challenge (sort of!). I eat a bowl of some sort of whole grain cereal for breakfast and lunch and then whatever greasy delight my hubby and kids are having for dinner (I TOTALLY agree, living with boys made me pack on a lot of weight!). I have probably 3 times the energy I had before I started eating the whole grains most of the day! It has made me feel so good that I’ve been more active during the day.
They should give you more than 6 weeks! You need time to find what will work for you and make you feel good too.
          Good luck, drag0n! 🙂

hiya drag0n! I’ve been working on my weight (who issn’t 😉 ) and have lost 😉 about 30 lbs. since January. It’s mostly with smaller portion sizes (and i agree with skeeter; living with boys is tough on your diet…) I can’t walk much ’cause of my stupid feet and the weather only warmed up here last week, so not much exercise going on. I haven’t denied myself anything, just eat smaller portions of it. I must admit that over the July 4th weekend all I wanted was popsicles and that’s mostly what I ate; well that and red licorice  It’s just been a slow process (which makes me crazy) but at least it’s STAYED off so far. Only 50lbs. to go…

One ‘trick’ I have found to be helpful in a diet is to replace most (all if you can stand it) of your drinks with normal water, and drink more water overall, unless you already drink a lot. At a minimum, limit or omit sugary drinks (sadly a lot of juices and most flavored drinks have some sort of added sugar– be it cane sugar, corn syrup, or a sugar substitute).

Wow guys! Thanks so much for all the advice!!! I’ll try a little of everything and see what works for me. Hopefully I’ll start to see some results. Right now I am about 5′ 1″ and weigh 160 >_< If I could get to 135 I'd be extatic!

I have been drinking A LOT more water and no soda. I know black coffee and tea are supposed to be good too but I just can't deal with black coffee. Blah!

Since I've been dating Shaun and we have been living together I've put on like 20 pounds, but HE has put on about 45-50 so I guess I'm not quite as bad as he is ^_^

Well everyone’s advice here is excellent! I definitely honed in on the water drinking and buying non-processed foods and whole grains. These are all KEY to following a good diet!! The problem with fad diets is that they get old really quickly – like, within a day or 2 – and its way easier to fall off the wagon and go straight for the worst stuff for you in retaliation!

I’ve found that replacing normal, every day foods in the kitchen with healthier alternatives has been the best way to “force” myself to eat better. So just as an example: if you like making sandwiches (I LOVE cold cuts!), here’s a quick breakdown of the caloric content in a “regular” sandwich:

                Hellman’s Mayonnaise (2 tablespoons): 180 calories
                Arnold’s White Bread (2 slices): 180 calories
Kraft American Cheese (2 Slices): 120 calories
Salami (I just found a generic brand, 2 slices): 148 calories
                TOTAL: —–628cals

Compare that to what I have in my kitchen:

                Hellman’s Light Mayonnaise (2 tablespoons): 90 calories
Nature’s Own Whole Wheat Bread (2 slices): 100 calories
Land O Lakes 2% White American Cheese (2 slices): 90 calories
Healthy Choice Oven Roasted Turkey (2 slices): 60 calories
                TOTAL: —–340 cals

And honestly.. it tastes BETTER! I tried some regular american cheese the other day and couldn’t stomach it, I’m so used to the Land O Lakes cheese now that I hate everything else! And even if you don’t think you can make yourself count calories every time you have something, as long as you do the research when you pick your brand and type of food (whole grains! Non processed! No sugar added!), once you’re surrounded with good things it will just come naturally that you shed the pounds.

One awesome trick with water is that if you’re feeling a little bit peckish and it’s not quite time for dinner or lunch, guzzle a big glass of water (not too fast or you’ll cramp XD) and it will tide you over for at least a half hour. If you don’t like drinking water constantly, do a little research into getting some packets to add to your water – they make a ton of delicious tasting no calorie options, my favorite being Snapple’s iced teas! Crystal Light is pretty good too. They DO have artificial sweetners in them so be aware of that, I know some people don’t like that stuff. I HAVE to have a cup of coffee in the morning and I HATE it black so I HAVE to add Splenda to my coffee, as well as about 3 tablespoons of skim milk. That’s another thing! If you’re a milk drinker, go skim. I hated it at first, but after a couple of weeks of getting used to it, you’ll find it tastes just like milk ever did. In fact, when I go to a restaurant or someone else’s house and have milk that’s not skim, it tastes like cream to me now! Blech!

I have a LOT of weight to lose. I’ve struggled with it my entire life and it’s only gotten worse in the past couple of years. I’ve done a fair amount of research and I’ve tried a fair amount of diets, and I’ve found that if you don’t like what you’re eating, IT WONT WORK! So it’s really important that you find foods that you like to eat and you think are delicious, but just happen to be way better for you XD I hope it works out for you drag0n!!

OH I totally forgot about this too – there’s a neat website I am on called “spark people” – http://www.sparkpeople.com – it’s a place where you can enter your goal weight, how much time you want to lose it in, and this website will give you caloric goals per day – how much of it you should eat, and how much of it you should burn. It lets you set up an excersize schedule, gives you options as to what you’d like to do and how much you’d burn doing it, and even gives you menu options you can choose from to get the exact amount of calories that you’ll need to get each day! If you are the type of person that likes seeing solid data of how to get to your goal, this is the place for you!!

                Good luck drag0n 🙂

I can’t drink black coffee either but if you add a packet or 2 of truvia (stevia) it is tolerable. I also put a splash of skim in…about a tablespoon is all. I also recommend interval training. I have had great luck with that. You walk (or use an elliptical or some other form a cardio) for 5 mins to warm up then for 20 minutes you do 1 minute of as hard as you can (without injuring yourself) and then another minute of a slower pace. After 20 minutes of that then do a 5-10 minute cooldown and stretch. As fitness increases then you can increase the interval portion or adjust the length of the intervals to keep your body guessing.
I am having an aweful time with my weight, especially this last 2 years. And I still haven’t found the motivation to eat less and exercise more. it’s great to read this and know that others are working on their weight too and being successful. It’s very motivating. 🙂 Good luck to all!!

One other thing I find that helps is that I write down everything that goes into my mouth. I was astounded to see how much i was consuming in the course of the day :O and the number of times that i stood in front of the ‘fridge and pantry (mostly out of boredom…) From there you can decide what you might be willing to cut out of your diet or replace with a lower calorie version. Wal-Mart carries a flavored water that is carbonated, tastes great and has zero calories. I had a horrible time getting enough water in my diet and i missed drinking soda – that water helped both problems; tastes like soda and one or two bottles a day help with my water intake. Good Luck!

THIS! Watching Josh strap on a 40lb back pack and go turtle hunting in the creeks in 100 degree weather was painful to watch, but he’s dropped a ton of visual weight, and maybe 20 or more pounds in the last month just exercising O.O I watched him slim down and it motivated me even more. Its easy to say, “Well, even if Im a few pounds heavier than I used to be, its okay, he/she still loves me” and brush it off, but when that pesron is saying “Okay, put on your work out clothes, lets go for a walk/run!” Its easier-especially when that person is suffering with you. And too, I try to guilt myself into it…”But you did it the last TWO days in a row! You CANT miss now! It would be a shame. You dont want that do you?” inner voice answers, “…nnnoooo” and other inner voice answers back, “Well then lets get goin!!”

I’ll second a lot of things the others have said. I fluctuate between 125 – 128 pounds. Here’s some of the things I follow.

I DO NOT drink sodas. Sodas are the work of the devil!! LOL. I drink lots of water, teas, and some fruit juice (pure juice, no syrup).

I try to stay away from the “fake” stuff – especially trans fats, aspartame, and high fructose corn syrup. I don’t care if corn syrup is “natural” and comes from a plant. Corn should be eaten on the cob, not turned into a liquid. Metabolically, it does terrible things to one’s body.

Don’t skip meals. I eat 3-4 smaller meals a day and will also have a tiny snack or two if I get hungry in between. The amount of food I eat is probably a bit excessive for others, but I refuse to withhold food from my body. I don’t won’t my body to think it’s starving and go into “survival mode”. I make sure I keep my metabolism running. I don’t count calories either – I hate math. 😛

But I watch what I eat… I follow the blood type-genotype lifestyle. It’s not the easiest “diet” for people to follow, but for me, I can follow nothing else. It’s works for me, and in my mind, makes a lot of sense. It’s hard to explain, but it basically takes into account your genetic makeup and how certain genes react with the foods you eat. Some react positively, while others should be avoided. It may sound a bit far-fetched, but when you are tired of feeling like crap and can’t make things work, you get desperate. In 2 weeks, I felt better. In 2 months, I had lost 15 pounds… and all I did was substitute some food choices.

Do I eat cookies? You betcha! I have a batch of home-baked chocolate chip cookies coming from my sister-in-law today. Am I going to eat them? Oh yes, every freakin’ last one of them! 👿

Do I follow the diet 100%? Pssh…no. I’ve been on the diet since 2003. I’ve kinda learned which foods I can “sneak” and how often… and some foods I’ve refused to give up. It’s all about give and take. I found that if you stick with it though, the diet can be very forgiving when you want to cheat. 😉

                          Hannah,
I am not trying to nit pick! It could be that you typoed or mis-wrote what you meant (heaven knows I do all the time, hahah!) but I wanted to let you know just in case– and for anyone else that cares– “whole wheat” is a marketing gimmick. According to US packaging standards, if they say “Whole wheat” it can still contained refined flour. There is no guarantee of how much actual whole wheat grains are used.. it could be 1% or 90%. All it means is that wheat flour was used!! Which is sort of expected with wheat bread…
There is no additional nutritional benefit! This is just white flour. Processed grains are stripped of the parts of the grain that contain most of the vitamins and minerals (and nearly all the fiber!) and are left with the endosperm only.

“100% Whole Grain”, however, is a whole different ball-field. This is the whole grain– the whole seed- and contains useful vitamins, minerals, and fiber. If you are going to eat bread may as well have the benefits. 🙂

                          Here’s some reading: http://vspages.com/whole-wheat-vs-whole-grain-4314/

Woops! Yeah I was just typing it quickly to give an idea of the exact bread package I was reading off of – it IS 100% whole wheat:

                          http://www.naturesownbread.com/NAT_Varieties/variety.cfm?categoryid=101&productid=284

They advertise this on their website as well:

                          100% whole grain
22 grams of whole grain per slice
3 grams of fiber per slice

I figure this is the type of stuff you were talking about. Sorry that I wasn’t more specific! (I also only copied and pasted the stuff I was most concerned with XD)
I like that on their website they even urge you to look at the package to see exactly what’s in it because it’s your best bet for finding the right stuff!
