I guess it can be considered a form of art, you can do alot with it!

Does anybody else crochet, around here? I sort of feel like an old lady, sometimes, but it’s great to keep your hands busy while you’re watching TV. I guess it’s sort of like smoking, since it prevents you from eating!

Here’s an afghan I’ve been working on, off and on, for a couple months.

I crochet off and on… my mom is amazing though. She makes those huge, thick afghans that weigh like 8 pounds and keep you super warm… in less than a month! I’m not as good as she is. 😉

That Afghan looks beautiful and very comfy, Rusti. I have aunts and great-aunts who crochet, and Oma (Swiss Grandma) does too, but I can’t say I do it.

Wow, someone else who crochets!! Yah, I crochet off and on too, whenever the craze takes me and I am sick of doing other stuff. I make ponchos, scarves, afghans, etc….mostly with large hooks.

I’m into knitting right now tho. I’m working on a scarf with malabrigo kettle dyed wool, beautiful and extremely soft.

Granny squares and rows and rows of single crotchet stitches are all I really know right now, but I’m making the attempt to learn how to read patterns so I can do more.

My sister does all sorts of cool things, like flowers and such, but she’s got someone to show her, I’ve been more or less learning on my own. but I can sure fly around that granny square! 🙂

I’m tempted to see if I can sell them, but they’re a lot of work for what people will pay for them, unfortunately.

If you know of any easy patterns, point me in that direction, I need to branch out. 🙂

I couldn’t crochet to save my life, but I do a little knitting – very basic stitches.

Can someone please tell me why I keep making triangles when I’m trying to make squares when crocheting? I thought I was following the instructions correctly from the book, but I couldn’t figure it out so I gave up. At least knitting needles keep everything straight.

It sounds like you aren’t doing enough stitches in the corners. When you approch the corner stitch you will typically work 3 or more stitches into your base row therefor creating a “bend” I can post a picture if youwould like.

Here I made a starting granny square. I chained a circle, worked 16 double crochets into the circle. Worked 4 double crochets(dc). In my next stitch I did 1dc, chained 3, did 1dc all in the same stitch. I did that 4 times around and joined into my first stitchs. I have a rough square w/ 4 ch3 spaces that become the corners. If I were to do another row it would become more square shaped.

Ooh, ooh I crochet! Not all the time, but I’ve taken to it much better than knitting (at least where more elaborate patterns are concerned).

Sadly I don’t have pics of the afghans I’ve been doing lately… I gave them away as gifts. I’ve done several in the same pattern, and while reasonably complicated, you can finish this one in a week or two in a few hours a day if you’re dextrous enough.

As for making triangles: asinnamon has the right idea. Don’t forget that last ‘hidden’ stitch at the end (whether it requires one or more stitches in it)! It’s easy to miss, and for awhile I couldn’t figure out why I kept losing one stitch at a time, getting shorter as I went. *grumble*

Thank you Asinnamon! I also noticed my “last stitch” when I came to the end (ex: doing first row after the chain) was always bigger than the rest. I probably just needed to triple up like you mentioned. Maybe I’m not as crochet challenged as I thought! 😀 I’ll try it the next time I get some down time.

Digital Dragon, yes, this was the same problem I was having.

                Thanks guys!

Yah, sometimes it can be hard to find that last stitch at the end of the row. When in doubt, count your stitches. I’ve been crocheting a bunch of years, so if you have anymore questions, give me a holler!!

Heh, I’ve had the problem of forgetting to count when I do things before, and ended up with a ‘scarf’ that was sort of…wavy…on the edges.

Took it apart and started again, so it was more or less even. At least with this stuff, you can pull things to pieces without much trouble at all!

Just curious, Rusti, but how much is an Afghan worth if you were to sell it?
