CO Akita needs a home ASAP

Got this from my friend in CO She raises Akitas and has 10 already (two for sale) She recently lost her job and cannot take on any more.
This is what I’m talking about:
I had a call from a lady from Denver this morning – she is desperately
trying to find a home for her 8 1/2 year old akita. She’s a sable color –
always lived in the house. She is a perfect dog – except – she doesn’t like
small children. They are moving to California and can not take her – they
are leaving in less than 4 weeks. If they can’t find her a home she will be
put down …. if you know of anyone wanting to adopt a girl that is
housebroken, doesn’t chew things up, and is a couch potato pretty much
please let me know. She’s going to check in with me every few day – Thanks

I have no idea why they cannot take her. Perhaps they are moving where there are no pets allowed. I just thought I’d run this by y’all and see if anyone is interested. If so PM me and I can put you in touch.

Has your friend tried to get in touch with a breed rescue group, khat? There are many, MANY breed rescue groups in CO and the surrounding states–we got our Golden retrievers from one when my parents lived out west 🙂 Some will even drive over state lines to take an animal at no cost to the owner. I don’t personally know of any Akita rescues, specifically, but it is worth a shot!

I don’t know. I sent an email suggesting that. They may be too full to take on another Dog. And your right, there are many that will come and get the dog. Perhaps they are just hoping to find a private home first. I know I would do anything rathr than put down a healthy animal
I also thought if they could at least take her to CA she could go to a rescue there. I know they have one.
This is not my friends dog. It belongs to a woman who called her hoping to find a place for her.

There are many akita rescues- but I don’t know about that part of the country just here. I know most here won’t take a dog over 6 years of age because they’re near impossible to place. They expect you to figure out a way to keep a dog once you’ve had one that long.

Any ethical vet will not put down a healthy animal. It would be very hard to find one. Unless they lie and say something like the dog is agressive and has bit people or has cancer or something you can’t just come in and say put this dog to sleep unless there is a life threatening illness where the dog is in pain or the dog is agressive or something like that. However, they could end up taking the dog to the humane society where at that age it would not likely find a home 🙁 That is really sad- Akitas are great dogs. I have always had them and also German Shepherds.

my sister’s Akita was taken by an Akita Rescue program because he had arthritis in his legs and needed a surgery to relieve pressure…she couldn’t afford the op…and they took him….had the surgery done…and found him a new home…

as far as I know…they never refuse any animal….

I really hope they find him a new, loving home. That must be a terrible situation for the owner 🙁

We actually got our dogs for a similar reason–their owner was elderly, moving into assisted living and couldn’t keep them. Both dogs were middle-aged; they had been together since they were puppies and we couldn’t bear the thought of seperating them, so we took them as a pair. Dad found this out later 🙄 It was pretty funny, he came home from work to meet the new dog (singular) and instead found the new dogs (plural). He was fussing over Honey the lurv bug and then Gus came waddling up like, “Well, where is MY welcome?” 😆

It depends on the individual rescue, each one has different rules and there’s only so much money to go around so different rules may apply at different times for example they might take a dog that needs surgery one time but the next time someone asks they might not have over a thousand dollars for a surgery so they might not be able to.

If the owner googles dog rescues in your state I’m sure there are many that are non breed specific and then probably at least 1 or 2 that are just Akitas- her best bet would be to start e-mailing/calling them all to see if she can find one to take the dog.

Thanks everyone for ll the advice. I actually have several Akita rescue websites bookmarked, just none specific to CO. I’m hoping to get some rescue Akitas one of these days. I can’t take this one as I’m in GA and can’t afford to ship it. Probably wouldn’t be good for her dog either.

I’ve had Alf (Alpha, my Akita/Chow) seven years and can not imagine giving him up for anything! I’d love to have more Akita’s.

In a pinch Colorado Shiba Rescue may be able to help as well, it depends on if they have room etc, they do take in Jindos occassionally so they may help an Akita.

Good idea Thanks. I’ll have her pass that on too. I’m sure if this woman tries hard enough that she could find someone. I just hope she doesn’t give up too easily.
