I’ve been holiday baking and was making Chocolate Pots (see Food thread) and my male cat, Loki, got into the dark chocolate. He’s snarfed down most of a 3.5 lb. bag of Ghiradelli bittersweet chocolate. Will this be a problem? I know that chocolate is dangerous when dogs get hold of it, but what about cats? Trying to clean up the baking utensils and keep him out the chocolate is almost impossible! He keeps chewing on my hands not just licking, really chomping! He does the same thing with peppermint. We have to make sure we don’t leave the toothpaste on the counter ’cause he chews holes in the tube and eats it. Do I need to get him to the vet?

December 18, 2007 at 6:15 pm #648327I would really call your vet ASAP and talk to them. I don’t think it is good for cats to eat chocolate.
December 18, 2007 at 6:16 pm #648328I don’t know about cats but you are right about dogs chocolate can be fatal. If I were you I would give the vet a call and ask. I hope your kitty is OK let us know.

December 18, 2007 at 6:25 pm #648331Eeekkkk!!!! Please do let us know what the vet says!!
December 18, 2007 at 7:05 pm #648332No! Cats and chocolate do NOT mix. Please get him to a vet for a safety check up. Im sure he’ll be fine and if hes showing any signs of ailing, the vet can deal with it.
My older cat Jester (siggie cat), he LOVES toothpaste. Theres never any left out or in the sink, but he loves to lick my electric brush once it’s back om the stand. Toothpaste is also not too good for cats either.
Please keep us informed!

December 18, 2007 at 7:43 pm #648335*sigh of relief* I’m so happy your kitty is going to be ok!!
Of course it was your fault…cats never take the blame. 😆
December 18, 2007 at 8:25 pm #648336Good that you acted so fast, twindragonsmum! Chocolate is very bad for cats as well as dogs, and bittersweet is a lot stronger than milk. Loki got a humongous amount, too. 😯 The dangers are seizure from the caffeine, and also there is a high risk of liver damage. I don’t know if cats are more or less sensitive to the liver effects than dogs. Usually they don’t have a sweet tooth! Keep a close watch on your kitty, and if he seems lethargic at all, or has a reduced appetite, or continues to vomit, call your vet right away. If you have to isolate him in order to tell how much he’s eating, that’s OK. I’m kind of worried about him. 😕
December 18, 2007 at 8:44 pm #648337I’m glad that at least he seems to be OK so far. Keep us updated
December 18, 2007 at 9:55 pm #648338Poor Kitty. I’m so glad he’s okay!!
December 18, 2007 at 9:59 pm #648339😯 😯 😯 😯 OMG!! That’s one HECK of a sweet tooth!!!! The only food fetish my cats have is tuna and pineapple. My Kashka loves the occasional tuna and Andromeda loves baked pineapple….she’s notorious for sneaking up on my pineapple upside down cakes and licking off all the pineapple….eeeew…. 😯
