I watched it a few hours ago ^^ it was a good movie. I haven’t read the books and my brother actually has…which is a trip since he never reads…and I’m a bookworm 😀 so I’ll be borrowing the books from someone/somewhere and reading them when I have time. My brother says there were two books and that they combined stories from both Beowolf and Grendel…I dunno how much I trust his memory though…
November 19, 2007 at 8:12 am #637846Algy: Ah, I see. Like I said, only read it once. Didn’t care for it either. But still. >__> The idea of Grendel’s mom being uh… not a monster…? is weird. XD
Thanks for clearing that up for me!November 19, 2007 at 8:17 am #637847Oooh, we just saw it tonight – I really enjoyed it. I’ve read the original (a little of it in the original old english, too!) and this adaptation is certainly different, but I thought it was well done. And, yes, it does definitely imply that Grendel’s mother is not really beautiful at all, and is in fact very monstrous, but appears beautiful to the men she wishes to seduce.
I really love the way this movie did Grendel. There are way too many sexy monsters these days – this Grendel was seriously disturbing and icky.
Man, I hope that people don’t bring their kids to this movie…I know I would have had some doozy nightmares after seeing it as a kid! Yikes!!

There is only one “book.” At least, there’s only one original text. It’s a very old manuscript from 800 A.D. in Old English. There are many translations of the text, however, and I think Seamus Heaney’s is the best. Also read J.R.R. Tolkien’s well-known essay on it called, “The Critics and the Monsters,” I think.
Other people have written their own versions since then. “The 13th Warrior” (“Eaters of the Dead” by Michael Crichton), “Grendel” by John Gardner (I think), and others. “Legacy of Heorot” and “Beowulf’s Children” by Niven, Pournell, and Barnes is an interesting sci-fi version. These are numerous and not always good, but the ones listed above are better than most.

It’s a pity, because I love the Beowulf story.I loved Grendels Mother… though, not Angelina. If you pay close attention to the reflection you see the true self of Grendels Mom, awesumness. She seemed like a huge dragongoldfish. But of course they didnt show it *rolls eyes* left the tasty bits aside… yes, I would have taken a full view of Grendels Mum OVER naked Beowulf and Angelina boobs.
Aside of the dragon thats the only thing I can praise on the movie. Half of the time the eyes were not focused or the comp could not mend the scans of the original actors and it looked like striking realism one second and then the next second simple computer game animation … hfrmmm… stuff. The horses gave me rabbies, totally, fully… never wanted to scream out so much in a cinema.Grendel had a nice skin texture… *counts fingers* was that it? yes, that was it. Watching it on big screen makes it dragonworthy, but if you know the original and treasure it, get the friggin DVD 😉
or better, when the DVDs out give me the remote so i can fastforward between hollywood nonsense and tasty fantasy stuff.November 21, 2007 at 6:45 am #637851That’s decided it, Aky. Thanks for your review. 😆 I guess I won’t be watching it.
November 21, 2007 at 2:57 pm #637852I’m going to go see it today. I’ll let you know how true to the original text (at least the Heaney translation) it is.

November 22, 2007 at 6:27 am #637854Well, in that case, I sure won’t say no! Weekend though, please. The workdays are chock full. Let me know when it works for you and I’d love to come over! 😀
November 22, 2007 at 2:56 pm #637855Got to the theater too late and missed the beginning. I won’t go into a movie late, so we’ll have to go another time.
We did order a new screen door for the front of our house. The old one was flimsy (wood) and didn’t latch shut. We still have to replace the inner main door, but we’re doing one step at a time. We won’t get it for two to three weeks, so the hubby will have to install it in the cold and snow (probably).
