I started a new job as an ACO a few months ago and encounter some pretty interesting things that I thought I would share. I won’t post any icky or sad things, just happy, cute, and cool things!

First of all, I would like everyone to meet the newest edition to my family!

This is Toph! I received a call on Monday night that someone had a domestic bird in custody. I drove out and low and behold, a poor, tired cockatiel landed on their porch! They quickly took her inside and placed her in a pet carrier with some seeds and water. I had a priority call come in just before I arrived, so I had to quickly scoop her up and place her in my truck.

Later, when things had slowed down and I was at the animal shelter, I brought her into the cab as I filled out my paper work. She was such a flirt and was climbing all over her carrier and sticking her head through the holes! I fell in love and wrote on the worksheet that I wanted to adopt her if she wasn’t claimed. By law, any animal not claimed within three days becomes the property of the shelter. Today was the fourth day and my husband and I were at the doors as they opened and took her home!

She is still a little beat up and we are hoping she will perk up after a few days of rest and healthy diet. To be safe we are taking her to the vet next week. We think that she had been lost for at least three days because a friend of ours (a cockatiel owner as well) saw one flying around not to far from where I picked her up a few days before!

      Next are some baby pictures!

A couple snakes (The bull snake was 5 feet long!)

And a bad photo of a bobcat (he wouldn’t cooperate for the camera as we were chasing him)

              So cute!!

As a bird owner, may I make a plea? Three days isn’t long, especially if she flew away from the home area where she got lost. If she is friendly she is likely a loved pet. Would you consider putting her up as found on a few of the lost bird location webites online? Her owners might actually be looking for her, but as light bodied as cockatiels can go, they tend to fly a long distance indeed. If one of my cocktiels ever got loose I’d be devastated and would do anything to get them back.

I made sure to check things like craigslist to see if anyone had posted something for a lost bird, but there wasn’t anything. 🙁 I live in New Mexico, and we are pretty isolated. Our town isn’t that big and it’s an hour by interstate to the next.

To be honest, right now is a big moving time for students and I think she was let go. We always have a ton of abandoned dogs and cats around moving times and I wouldn’t be surprised if other critters were dumped as well.

Messed up, we’d be very upset if something happened to our cockatiel, & I just don’t get people abandoning their pets & thinking that somehow they will survive on their own. Stupid.

I checked the links you sent. There is only one bird around our area that comes close to matching her (and it’s sounds like that bird has a lot more yellow in the face) is a three hour drive on the interstate with literally nothing (I seriously cannot impress upon you how little habitation there is in NM) but desert and sun.

It makes me feel better knowing I made the effort to find where she came from, but if she was lost (and not dumped) the previous owners have not made a huge effort to get her back.

Yep, we relocate all our snakes. I picked up another rattler and bull snake yesterday. I have pictures of the rattlesnake I’ll post soon.
