I am going to Europe in May w/ my mom for my brother’s wedding. Do any forum members live in Paris, France, Monterosso, Italy or Rome, Italy?
I am looking for ideas for thing to do. My mom wants to see Versaille (sp), so we’ll do that but everything else is up for discussion. Apparently I am in charge of ummm everything.

Sun Dragon Koi #3January 27, 2012 at 5:36 am #871266GreaterBasalisk lives in Switzerland. If you tell her you are coming (this far in advance) she might could plan a day trip to France or Italy to meet up for lunch/dinner or something.
Oh! Versailes! *swoons* I haven’t been there, but I can say with certainty that its an awesome place. The perfume capital of the country and possibly the world is in Versailes. I imagine the whole city to smell like lavender, roses and other flowers; especially in May! Just bring your French! I doubt you’ll find many english speakers that far from Paris
January 27, 2012 at 1:38 pm #871304PM Greater Basilisk, she’s very busy and isn’t online very often, but she’d be thrilled to meet you.
There’s honestly tons to see in Paris itself – Versailles is outside (Louis XIV built it so his court could be there and he could have them all in one place and watch them). You’ll have to decide what you want to do! The biggest ones of course are the Louvre and the Tour Eiffel. You also have the Arc de Triomphe, but just walking along side the river, with tons of little street shops is great too.
Google “What to see in Paris” and go from there. If you’re in highly tourist areas, you’ll have English-speaking guides, and people have to learn a second language in school, so many of them do have some basic English (though some learn German or Italian), but yeah, brush up on your French, especially if you decide to go off the beaten trails.
My brother was in Rome a few years back and he hit every single colisseum within distance – he made us all jealous when he was able to attend a performance of Carmen in one of them.
And the churches! Don’t forget the churches, no matter where you go. Whether big or small, they’re all worth seeing. Some are quite old, actually, so they’re even more interesting. They will all be Catholic churches, though. In Southern France, you’ll find Protestant temples, but not in Paris. I’m not sure for Italy, but I suspect it’s the same.
Have a blast!

January 28, 2012 at 12:51 am #871420Lol. A lot of people want to go with me. I speak a little French, and a friend of mine is fluent. He said we could get together once a week until I go to brush up on my conversational French.
Thanks for the ideas. I’ll see if I can get a hold of GB. We have a few months to see if she can work something out.

Sun Dragon Koi #3January 28, 2012 at 2:54 am #871436I will be in Europe late June/July. I booked the Hop on Hop off pass for a few cities. Hotels in Paris seem to be cheaper close to Disney then inner-city. We also went with the Eurail Select Pass.(This pass gives you unlimited travel on the national rail networks of 3, 4 or 5 bordering countries connected by train or ship.)
January 28, 2012 at 3:04 am #871438Snerk. *imagines my mother traveling by train* We will fly into Paris, then from Paris fly to Florence. From Florence we will go Monterosso for the wedding, and take the train to Rome for a few days. We will fly home from Rome.
I think the one train trip might be enough for my mom. 🙂 She’s a little overwhelmed by the whole thing. Versailles is the one thing in France she didn’t get to see when she went w/ my dad many years ago. I’m trying to find fun things to do w/o overwhelming her. She’s terrified of going to a place where she doesn’t speak the language. I also have to keep in mind that Mom isn’t a young as me, so horseback riding along the cliffs of Gallway Ireland was out. That was amazing. i couldn’t walk for the rest of the day, but I’d do it again in heartbeat.
Churches and Louvre are her types of things though. I want to see the L’Arc de Triumph though.

Sun Dragon Koi #3January 28, 2012 at 3:37 am #871448We are flying from JFK to Barcelona, Spain. Have a two day tour booked then we leave for a 2 week cruise. The cruise hits all the major cities in Italy. Florence we have passes for Galleria degli Uffizi and then Tower of Pisa. Rome has way to much to see. We booked a private tours for St. Peters and the Vatican Museum. I want to see Pompeii! I still have Venice, Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Germany to do research on. We have a group of 11 and i have to book/plan everything! If you find any tours please share. We need English tour guides!
March 28, 2012 at 4:01 am #877357So I gots a few questions. 🙂 I will be bringing my iPad 2 and kindle touch w/ me and I need to know about power adapters. What do I need to buy to recharge my toys? Does anyone have suggestions about what works and what does not. I do not want to fry my entertainment. I do not want to bring my lap top, as it’s bulky and the iPad will do wifi if I need to get online–love my iPad btw. Any and all advice is welcome.
Does anyone have any suggestions about cell phones? Are they needed? What is the best option(s)
Thanks all

Sun Dragon Koi #3March 28, 2012 at 5:53 am #877360I don’t know if you NEED a cell phone, but if you want to have one, you can usually call your carrier before you leave and let them know and they can temporarily swap you to an international plan.
OR you can buy a minutes pre-pay phone in the country you’re visiting.
Just don’t use your cell phone without getting the swap made! 🙂

I’m not sure if an adapter would be enough and if you might need a converter. I would check at the Sony Store and ask them.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmMarch 28, 2012 at 10:45 pm #877390I was hoping some of our European members or others who had traveled would know the answer. I read a lot about ipad and kindle being able to convert themselves, but I am not certain i read that correctly.

Sun Dragon Koi #3March 29, 2012 at 11:18 am #877411I think you will definitely need a converter since it´s 220/230V and 50Hz in France and Italy. But I´m not 100% sure since I have no experiences with either iPad or Kindle >_<
A friend of mine travels a lot and always takes his iPad with him. I will ask him if he knows anything.
*Edit*
My friend says you don´t need a converter for the iPad, an adapter is enough. It seems Apple offers a Travel set with all adapters.March 29, 2012 at 5:33 pm #877419i will look into that for the ipad. Thanks. Now, I need to know if the kindle is safe in Europe…anybody?

Sun Dragon Koi #3March 29, 2012 at 5:48 pm #877420Maybe this discussion at Amazon will help?
From that, it looks like Kindle works with both 110V and 220V currents.
