Hi Melody!
While I love this colouring myself, I’m posting for a family member, bedridden in recovery. Paraphrasing but coming darn close to exactly what she has said, while there isn’t much that could make her give up or sell her Windstone collection, she is *so* desperate (for a very specific reason) for production or LP (in the store) Hoofers in BUCKSKIN colouring, she would! She even says dorsal stripe not necessary (if it’s too much). I doubt it’s the meds but her big statement was that she would give up almost her entire WE collection for a set of Buckskin hoofers (that is a lot)! Her first squeak is for Pegasi to be done in them because this would be a memorial (wings/angels, parallel), but if you simply cannot, Unicorns would fly with her as well.IMO, I cannot express to you enough, how desperate she really is for this colour to be released in the store where she, as well as other Buck lovers here, can afford and enjoy them… have a fighting chance to get them, rather than weep at watching them (or similar ones) tick down on ebay. Females of the hoofers are her first choice if that makes any sense or difference to you.
With respect, we realize you have tons of squeaks going on so we hope this one more is no inconvenience or pressure. We understand and respect the creative process and pressures that it can carry. Thank you for reading.
ps: she offers to email you many personal photos of her late buckskin if you need great resolution photos from many angles, if you’re so inclined.

May 15, 2010 at 6:27 am #815016I’m sorry to hear about your friend’s loss! I’d probably spring for a buckskin pegasus. 😉

Goodness! It is hard to not answer a squeek that loud! I actually was planning to do the pegasus-es in buckskin or dun… Yes, I would like some pictures! The only real visual difference ( I realize they are different, genetically) I see between buckskin and dun is that the tails are solid black on a buckskin.May 15, 2010 at 4:52 pm #815018Awe, Melody, you’re a peach! Hope my loud squawk wasn’t too deafening! 😳 My personal email has been screwed up for a long time and being that I’m living with my cousin to help take care of her in recovery, we all use hers. You’ll recognize it. Besides, the title of the email will let you know the Buckskin photos are in it. I just have to hunt them down on her computer and format them for email… they’re everywhere!
I think I just got lightheaded at the prospect of Buckskin Pegs being in the store (hopefully either large batch or more than once or twice cause no matter how many of us are constantly watching the store from over here, we seem to have horrific timing and miss many first go ’rounds). I’m giddy for my cousin. I’d do anything to keep her frame of mind positive. Just hope it didn’t cost you your ear/eye drums!
Thank you for reading and responding so quickly, Melody.
Stellarwing, thank you for your kind words.

The visual differences between buckskin and dun: Duns MUST have a visible dorsal stripe. The leg barring and shoulder bars are not always seen, but the dorsal stripe will always be there. Both dun and buckskins can have solid black tails.
Also, duns don’t have to be creme with black points… Dun is what makes black horses grulla.I’ll join the squeak for buckskin hoofers!!! squeek*
May 15, 2010 at 9:29 pm #815020I’ll “ditto” on that squeek* as well. Aside from dapple grays, buckskin is my favorite coloring for horses.
May 15, 2010 at 10:25 pm #815021Ditto that squeak, Mel! 😀
May 16, 2010 at 4:18 am #815022I’ll also add to this squeak. My sister’s buckskin mare just got diagnosed with cancer and she probably only has a year if it has spread as much as the vets expect 🙁 . My sister doesn’t collect windstones but I bet she would love a rearing buckskin pegasus to remember her baby by when she’s gone 🙁 I also wouldn’t mind some buckskin unicorns and pegasi. It isn’t my favorite color but it will be unique 🙂 (I’d still like dapple gray the most though if that’s possibly in the works 😀 )
May 16, 2010 at 7:18 pm #815023Do buckskins have to have jet black tails and manes? All duns aren’t buckskins , but are all bucksins dun?
Duns often have lighter margins on their long haired areas, which is why I like them as a possible production color, any sharp color change, such as between the mane, tail, and body color is a pain to do in production. That is why I decided not to try doing bays.
Ever see a champagne horse? They look like light duns, but the skin under their hair is bright pink, almost fushia. A friend of ours had one.May 16, 2010 at 9:51 pm #815024It depends on whether you’re talking about visual appearance or genetics. Genetically, a buckskin is a bay with one cream gene (i.e. the bay version of palomino) while a dun has one or two dun genes; some horses are both dun and buckskin. Visually, the colors overlap, except that all duns WILL have a dorsal stripe and may have other primitive marks (leg and shoulder stripes, pale borders to mane and tail, etc.). Buckskins (as with bays) may occasionally have dorsal strips but lack the other primitive marks. Like the bays, the manes and tails (and legs and eartips) will be solid black. Combo horses are frequently paler in color than either, with the dun factor markings.
But visually, people tend to call the golder ones ‘buckskin’ (with or without dorsal stripe) and the tanner ones ‘dun’.

Buckskins don’t have to have jet black tails. This is a mare I just bought. She’s buckskin.
Think of buckskin as creme on bay. Creme is a separate modifier from dun. A horse can have creme and dun at the same time or just creme or dun.
Love champagne color on horses! If you really want to get tricky…. Here’s a champagne, +creme, +dun: 😀

May 17, 2010 at 3:19 pm #815027You are so great Melody! I will add my to Sway’s (even though you already said yes), so my lovely friend will get her buckskin. 😀
May 17, 2010 at 3:59 pm #815028I’ll throw in my squeak as well, cause buckskin is probably my most favorite equine color.
Phoenix, that mare is gorgeous. Look at all those dapples!
