For the first time in my life I’m writing applications. For six months or so I’ve been looking through job sites on a daily basis; I’m sending off an application this evening (if I can get the gumption to do it; I meant to send it on Tuesday but kept having second thoughts.) Point being, I’m looking for a job in the canton where my house is and wavering between doing what I do now (desk jockey) to just earn money enough money for my vehicles and have plenty of free time to travel and drive, even if it means souring at a computer most of the time, or applying for a job that will be more meaningful but also a lot higher-stress, 100% and require a major effort.
I’ve been obsessing about the subject for days, so to take my mind off it, here’re two questions for all y’all: What’s your absolute dream job? (Winning the lottery and sunning on a beach every day doesn’t count.) And are you happy with the job you work at now? If not, what’s a job, realistically speaking, you would like to land in a foreseeable future?

I’ll start: Someday I hope to be a full-time author who lives off her fiction productions. But that’s still in the rough draft stage and doesn’t happen quickly. So I’m looking around. A “real dream” job I could actually get into at this point would be… Well, and that is precisely my problem. I’ve been eyeing the cantonal police for months but I’m having commitment issues…

      What about you?

I would like to be a full time air-brush artist and get paid enough to live “comfortable” for it. πŸ˜€ Seriously though, creating beautiful works of art and have them up in Art Museums for many to enjoy. You have to love what you are doing for it to be your Dream Job and there is nothing more relaxing and enjoyable for me than to draw or paint. Why not make a living at it at the same time, right? πŸ˜€ I think my favorite genra is galactic art.Space is infinite…..

I love my job, I do Night Audit at a hotel, because I work nights I get paid more than the rest of the desk staff, and I can pretty much always find a job where ever I go. I get paid really really well by most places standards, and pretty good even for here, I sew, I cross stitch, I paint PYO’s, I watch TV and movies, I facebook, MSN, download movies, or hell even sleep, and get paid for all of it, how could one not love this job? I get to meet people from all over, and because we have many people who are long term, get to know many guests pretty well. I work with some awesome people, and am friends with most of them, in short, again, I love my job.

If I were to not do this anymore I can not honestly think of something I would like more πŸ˜• .

Actually, Kalandra, stay-at-home mom counts very much. So it’s cool to hear you can live your dream. πŸ˜€

Being your own boss is one of those wishful thoughts almost everybody seems to have. Is there anyone here who, if given the choice, would rather be an employee than have their own business?

@Ruffian. You can take PYOs to work? That sounds awesome! I don’t think it’d be for me because I have fairly rough time staying awake at night, but I guess one would get into a schedule… No wonder you’re satisfied. Way to go.

be a mixture of freelance artist (perhaps do concept work for studios), writer and illustrator of my own projects, and a part time teacher.
I’d like to work from at home (have evening courses etc) and perhaps raise a family beside that, have chickens and the stuff..
I want to have enough money to be flexible (not count the peas) but I dont need that much money for expensive gadgets and travels.
it means a lot to me to have a place I can call home, as I am a real routinier, meaning, my childhood dream of paleontologist is a no go for me now. I want my four walls.

ruffian: you lucky bird you… man, that sounds AWESOME! where can I apply? lol

To be honest, I figure I’ve got it where I am. A ‘desk job’ with great coworkers and a great employer (my ‘perfect boss’ recently got a promotion, so things are in limbo there), that still leaves me enough energy when I go home to launch into my ‘real’ work–my novels, stories, and art. Been there over 12 years now, and it’s good. Just wish I didn’t have to commute into the city, is all. πŸ™‚

You shame me, Adaneth. You’ve been working at your job for 12 years? I’ve realized I tend to get bored after two…

Haha! Poor Aky. Well, if it makes you feel any better, I admire every piece of artwork I see from you, especially your creature, plant and world creations. At least you’re living part of your dream job while I seem to be willing to settle for effortless jobs, just so long as they keep me in gas and tires… πŸ˜†

Well, there’s been a couple promotions in those years, and a lot of change as technology changes. But I enjoy routine because it leaves my creativity free to ‘ferment’…but I also enjoy challenges because I can learn something new technically. Doesn’t mean I don’t have my grumpy days when I’d rather be home writing! πŸ˜†

i thought i had my dream job… a senior graphic designer at a prestigious design studio in a swanky part of town designing for luxury hotels and resorts all over the world. then… it just became a job with all the usual stress, drama and whatnot. then i had my daughter and now work (still for the same company) from home as well as take care of her. its tough to juggle but i think i’ve really seen what my real passions and interests are. my dream job now would be to be a fantasy artist and get paid for it (of course). but, in the meantime i’m working on growing my own studio/freelance gig on the side so that i can quit my other job.

GB, in response to your question about if its better to be your own boss or work for someone… its always a toss up!! depends on how much stress and responsibility you want. lol, i think im a control freak so i have a tendency to lean towards doing my own thing.

No matter what you do or where you work, at one point, you’ll be either bored, stressed, etc. from your workplace, especially if you’re there for a long time. Every job has its ups and downs! But if you like what you do and the people with whom you work, those times just come and go; you just deal with them and forget about them after a while.

I found out that I need to go into an office or whatever workplace at least 2 days a week, simply for the contact and the teamwork. The other days, I can be at home and write mah shtuff or work from home. In fact, I’m waiting to hear back from a company that would offer me these exact working conditions. Plus it seems their busy workload isn’t really busy for me, so it’d be a break from what I’ve done over the past 10 years (I did change companies at one point because I burned out).

My dream job involves giving me time and energy to continue with my novels. I’m a translator by trade (since I’m unemployed right now, I’m kinda really thinking only about this type of position) and my dream job also involves translating interesting content. The pharmaceutical industry was therefore perfect. With what I do, I could freelance and work only from home, but it’s too isolating; I need people contact!

So I wish you luck, GB!

Good for you Kalandra! Stay at home moms dont get the recognition they deserve. Its not a full time job, its a 24/7/365 job! How old is your little one(s)?
