I can’t describe this too well… other then how quick that wind picked up, how hard it was raining, the sudden thunderstorm with hail… mass panic…
So I’ll show you the link.
There was 5 of us at Capital X at the fairgrounds. Let me tell you… mass panic. There were a couple of people hyperventilating, and everyone was talking about tornadoes! I was clueless. Apparently there were funnel clouds out by Leduc (an hour away). I think there were minor injuries at worse and no one died. Couple of wrecked cars, and the CN tower had a hunk fall off. The front entryway.
That feeling of panic in the air really started to freak me out. Then I remembered that, although we were in tornado alley…. the probability of a tornado happening here was pretty slim. The last major one was in 1987.
We all took a bus home, dried off, lit a couple of candles (power was out) and putzed around for awhile. By that I mean 5mins…. it came back on pretty quick. That storm could have caused a heck of alot more damage if it had lasted longer. BUt it moved on pretty fast. Maybe an hour to 2 hours of the most intense stuff, then it just…….. stopped.
This is what happened to Capital X in the storm…
Kinda glad everything shut down when it did. Sure made the fair more exciting (read… actually exciting. It was rather boring except for the wine tasting and drink mixing presentation….).
What was funny though… this guy threw a drink (sprite?) at some girl in the train station… and a cop comes and hauls him away… had to shove the girl out of the way because she was trying to come kill the guy…. and as the cop hauls him away, he says “Just come with me. I’m HELPING YOU.” I found that so very funny…. mostly because the girl (and other panicked observers) would have killed him I bet! Mob mentality can get pretty nasty. Fear, anger, and a spark to set them off (if rather inconsequential in and of itself) and… bam!
So…. that was my weekend. How bout yours?
July 20, 2009 at 2:59 am #498789July 20, 2009 at 3:21 am #776359not so good. saturday was pretty ok, but WAY too hot for me…
and then last night the dark barked next door and woke me up in pts panics, i was arfriad some one was in the back yard…could not go to sleep so i sat up in my dark room. I could see my kitty was sitting in the window seel right above my headboard…so i got enough courage to peek where she was at, between the window shade, to out into the back yard….
very sneakily…and felicity did not recognize me, she looked at me with nostrils flaring and eyes as wide as can be and when i leaned a little closer……..she hissed and flipped out, ran out of my room.
well the comotion, and the fact that my cat, sent me to check the rest of the house, make sure doors were locked….
all the cats were in the living room stairing at me like i was some stranger, they were ready to fly every where as i walked around.so i got little sleep. slept for the rest of the night on the couch with the living room light on.
today i slept……..a lot, was sore and in pain because of muscle tightness, and right now still am tired. it;s still hot too.July 20, 2009 at 5:05 am #776360Thats crazy Dragon, we were going to go for the Ex this weekend too, kinda glad we didnt now. A few years ago there was a storm like that in Edmonton, the skylights in WestEd broke and the ice rink was flooded, I was at the the theater in South Edmonton Common for that one and came out right at the height of it, that was bad enough, LOL. Glad you guys are ok though.
As for my weekend, we did some fishing and hanging out in the river, had a fire and hotdog roast on saturday, and changed the oil in the quads and the trike, i know ever so exciting, LOL.

You were just on the wrong end of it. There are still people who don’t have power tonight.
I could have taken a lot more pictures but driving around Argyll Road with no street lights, no traffic lights, hail and rain, in my little car… dodging trees… that was an experience! The south side of Edmonton was a literal black and green mess. The LRT was stranded out on the bridge by the University. There was absolutely no power to be had south of the University to at least 51 avenue. Listening to the EMS/Fire dispatch last night it seemed that Epcor was basically dealing with the downed lines by simply shutting down complete neighbourhoods so fires or accidents wouldn’t happen.
Here at home 109 Street was black, yet somehow our building managed to survive. Even so, we have an emergency generator so we’re good. I drove over to the data center because one of our wireless antennas got knocked out, and found a huge chunk of the wooden fence from the railway, blown out of the ground and lying in my parking stall. We had power at the data center, but that’s only because we are across the road from the substation. The rest of 142 Street was dead. Lucky us.
Here’s a few trees around my condo this morning that I had to dodge to get out
Here’s the front of the CN Tower. When my servers used to be here, I parked in that very spot – OFTEN. Had my servers still been there yesterday, I would have been in that very spot as I was always there during storms like this to ensure the battery backups were running. Freaky.
Photo credit goes out to Jeff Espejo, who is another client on mine who hosts with me as well.I took some pictures from my balcony showing the blackouts on the south side, but without my tripod I couldn’t do proper long exposures and they didn’t turn out.
Fun times.

OMG!
Well, in contrast, my weekend was boring. No rain, a bit of a breeze, a bit of sun… Yup, boring and I loved it!
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

So glad you don’t work there any more, Adraenyse, and didn’t get your car smashed. That is freaky.
July 20, 2009 at 1:40 pm #776364Yikes! Compared to that my weekend was nicely boring.
July 20, 2009 at 2:03 pm #776365Mine, too!
What a storm. I’m glad none of you were hurt.
July 20, 2009 at 2:38 pm #776366I still say there could have been more damage. I knew there was alot, but we weren’t on the worst part of the city. Worst damage we had was a few broken limbs and a small power outage which didn’t last too long.
Still… lots of people freaking out at the Ex…. 😮
July 20, 2009 at 3:03 pm #776367Yowch! 😮 I’m glad you’re okay! Sounds like you had a microburst – almost a tornado but not quite 😮

That’s normal without the storm though. 😉
July 20, 2009 at 3:19 pm #776369we had a little storm compared to that one. It kicked up quick and hit 65mph winds and broke a section of our tree…but nothing like that looks like hurricane damage in those pictures.
Otherwise, my weekend was full of picking up dog dodo -_-;
Glad everyone stayed safe in that though <3
