We let the dogs go outside tonight cause they all said there was something out there. Yep, there was, a strange dog…and of course our male dog, Ein, brainless testosterone filled idiot that he is, challenged it. Ein is a chihuahua, min pin cross, weighing in at a whopping 5 lbs, and the other dog was probably about 40 lbs +.

We call everyone in, thinking that no one is hurt. Wrong! Ein is covered in mud, was rolled, but more telling is he is hunched over and walking stiffly in obvious pain. So I pick him up and he screams, and I notice one very bad thing…he has air under his skin.

What does that mean? It means in the brief seconds long encounter with the other dog, it managed to do some serious trauma to my little dog and punctured a lung. The skin isn’t broken, but it is obvious to me from his breathing that his left lung has collapsed.

Not good. So now I am trying to get the 2 year old to go to sleep so I can rest a bit, while my husband and roommate take Ein to the local vet. So far Karli won’t settle, and I’m not really able to rest due to worry. Anyway, everyone if you would just pray for my little dog, I’d appreciate it. He’s almost exactly the same age as Karli being born 2 weeks before she was, and we had always thought they would grow up together.

So far Ein was stable, his right lung was okay, and he was able to scream and walk, so I am hoping that with quick enough medical help he will be fine, but it is hard to know. I don’t even want to know what the bill will be.

    I’ll update tomorrow.

Good luck girl. Sorry about your dog. That’s horrible. Makes me think twice about letting mine out w/o a leash. I do it all the time and they are great, but other dogs might not be. 🙁 Good luck.

Well the vet took out 150 CC’s of air out of his side and then wrapped him up so that the skin would lie flat against the ribs and hopefully seal the air leak, this sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.

Doped him up with some Torb and gave him some steroids to help with pain and shock. Vet is cautiously optomistic that he will be okay. Today he is going to take x-rays and see if there is any broken ribs, for sure one or two has been displaced.

So for now he is stable and reasonably comfortable. With luck when I get off work today and go see him he will be doing better. It turns out the right lung was the one compromised, and thankfully wasn’t collapsed, just leaky. He explained in dogs that a collapsed lung on one side is very bad, because it usually will cause the other lung to collapse as well, unlike in humans where we can get away with having one go down temporarily. I didn’t know that.

        Anyway, so far so good.

I hope the wrapping up trick works and the poor little guy bounces back quickly. 🙁

Hope the bill isn’t too horrific either.
