I just had to rant! Why are people so cruel?
I actually got a call from a shelter today. A woman surrendered her 8 year old, spayed, female Min Pin, because her Catahoula had puppies and she was going to keep some pups and didn’t have room for the Min Pin any more. The shelter had sense to keep her seperate from the other unvaccinated, and ill dogs.
Sometimes, I have to turn away shelter dogs due to illness and disease. I can’t afford to bring sick dogs into a home with so many elderly dogs.
I am going to pick her up Saturday if she doesn’t get adopted. I usually take in older dogs (or dogs with diabetes/ medical problems) like this. It never ceases to amaze me how someone can just discard a pet they have had that long on a whim.
I actually find the older females fit right in to the pack and they usually cause less trouble than younger dogs.I just don’t understand how someone could own a pet for 8 years and then just throw it away. This dog doesn’t have any issues and is up to date on shots.
I currently have 10 dogs, but frequently have as many as 13 or 14. Because I take a lot of older dogs, I have the heartache of loosing dogs to disease or age, it breaks my heart every time I loose a dog, but at least I know they had a good life with me, or with their new adoptive home.
It makes me feel good that I don’t have to say no to dogs who have owners who think they are disposable, they are loved at my home and if they are healthy then I find them new forever homes. My husband is wonderful about taking them in also.

May 23, 2008 at 2:38 am #706431That’s just sad. I could never give away an animal I’ve lived with. My cats will be with me until they pass, hopefully not for a long while yet. And I’m hoping to get a dog once we move into a bigger place.
You’re wonderful for taking her/him (?) in.
May 23, 2008 at 2:42 am #706432It breaks my heart to hear of how some animals are just discarded when they are no longer young and cute. I can’t believe anyone could give up a pet after 8 years. There is nothing you could offer me that would even make me consider giving up my cats-they are mine and they are mine for life. I used to volunteer for the cat shelter here, but it was the people that got to me, abandoners and the people who ran the shelter-I couldn’t stand to get to know the cats and then have them put to sleep cause there just wasn’t enough room for everyone. It was always the kittens that got picked, even though the older ones were amazing and loving too.
You and your husband are wonderful for taking in so many dogs 🙂
May 23, 2008 at 2:46 am #706433I could understand if the family was moving or they were ill or they couldn’t afford to care for her.
I frequently get dogs from people who are ill/dying or from families who have a loved one who died and they aren’t dog people, so they don’t want grandma’s grumpy old dog.
I just can’t see discarding an old pet to get a new one. People never cease to amaze me with their callousness. Does the owner even realize the dog is on a death sentence and the minutes are ticking down? The shelters down here still use gas chambers, and stuff them full of live animals. It is horrific!
It is a female named Roxy, thank goodness the shelter called me. The girl (at the shelter) is worried she won’t get a home due to her age. Thank goodness she seems like she has a good head on her shoulders. She said the owner even dropped of the shot records.
The shelter is a very rural one and has had some big problems, but they seem to be trying to improve.
The best thing is that my husband didn’t even hesitate when I told him we were going to take her.
May 23, 2008 at 3:03 am #706434That is so cruel to do to a loved pet…thank goodness for people like you… 🙂 I am sure the MIN PIN will appreciate going to a new home and if you do end up getting her or him please post some pics…I would love to see her.. 🙂

May 23, 2008 at 3:08 am #706435Bless You for the wonderful things you are doing for animals.
I can’t understand how somebody can give up a pet they had had for years. When my company transferred me to Atlanta I had several people ask me what I was going to do with Starfire (she was a blind 8 year old chow I had had since she was 8 weeks old). I said what do you think I am going to do I am going to take her with me. I drove her from KC, MO to Atlanta, GA even though the company woudl fly me and ship her because I felt it would be to stressful for her. By the way after that trip I couldn’t get her back in the car for a couple of weeks.
I love all the animals I have had. In fact I just spent $6K eight months ago to save the life of my 12 year old male chow. Today he is doing wonderfully and I hope to have him for as long as possible.
May 23, 2008 at 3:29 am #706436I don’t get it either. To me that would be like discarding my twins just because they weren’t cute babies anymore and didn’t fit into my plans 👿 👿 👿

May 23, 2008 at 3:49 am #706437I concur with everyone else. Unless your situation turns dire (unforeseen circumstances, for example) I can’t imagine getting rid of a pet I’ve had for years. I’ve had to put two dogs down, but both dogs bit people and other pets. We have invested thousands of dollars to keep some of our pets alive and healthy. It’s just sad that some people don’t care about their animals. 😥
I’m glad you are going to adopt her, keschete. I know she will be going to a good and loving home that will appreciate her as long as she lives.
May 23, 2008 at 4:04 am #706438I can’t imagine anyone giving away a loved pet unless they REALLY had to (dire circumstance, etc) but this doesn’t count.
I remember a cat came into the SPCA when I worked there that was given to us by family members when the owner died. He was scared, and would cry if we took away his favorite blanket (probably smelled like the owner). Needless to say this cat never got adopted. 😥
People think that if they just deposit the animal there that they will always find a good home, but (especially in shelters that aren’t no-kill – and ours certainly didn’t have the funds) it rarely happens.
People make me mad. 👿
May 23, 2008 at 4:28 am #706439You are doing a wonderful thing taking in dogs that have little chance of finding other homes. People like you are one in a million!

May 23, 2008 at 5:14 am #706441How wonderful to do that.
My grandson and I walk the dogs at our local pound. Its a Paws Pound.
So I totally can see where you are coming from.
And I thank you for all those little guys who need you.
