I was just wondering how you guys store your Windstones- particularly those of you who have display cabinets. I (currently) have my Windstones stored in a short/small glass display cabinet I got from Ikea, but I’m running out of room and frankly I worry about how well the glass shelves will hold up under the wieght. I’m afraid to put more than two large dragons on each shelf.
So where did you guys get yours? Any tips for finding a new one? I’d like to find one thats relatively short (no tall ones) and has wooden shelves (since I’m paranoid) but glass doors so you can see inside.

    This is mine; I got it from Alco for $100. I’m starting to run out of room though and then some of them will end up being moved to the bookcase I guess. ^^;

Before I moved, most of my displyed Windstones were in this:

I had some pieces boxed up, and PYOs were displayed elsewhere. I tried to make sure none of the heaviest pieces were together on a shelf. The Emp got the most support, with the highest visibility (the center shelf had an extra support). I won’t do wooden shelves because it cuts out too much light. My glass shelves were fairly thick, so could handle a decent amount of weight (not sure how much, but I knew I was okay).

I have a new curio, since I couldn’t bring my other one… still glass shelves, but smaller pieces that are nested within wooden borders, so it’s even better. When I get back stateside, I’m going to need another big one though, if my house will allow it.

I won’t keep my Windstones out in the open… they have to be behind doors (I hate dusting). So that limits me. I don’t get my cabinets anywhere special… but I’ve got to have the big ones, so it makes me shy away from online furniture in favor of local stores that I can see the cabinet first.

I have my larger pieces on IKEA Bookshelves. I use BILLY and they have nice strong Adjustable Wooden Shelves and If you want you can get glass doors for them

I got my first 2 from an antique store that was retiring and selling off their display cases. When I ran out of room from that πŸ™‚ I had an out of work carpenter build another one on top on the original bigger one. It has metal supports and 3/8″ glass shelves. The glass people said that the glass was thick enough to support 40lbs per foot so unless I am supremely lucky enough to ever get a secret keeper, I’m confident that the shelves will support the Windstones. Now I’m running out of room again (!) so I think I will let go (with a heavy heart) some of the ones I have before I try to figure out more space. Several antique stores and jewelry shops have gone out of business, that might be a good area to keep an eye out for. The cabinets I have, one came with lights, one I installed them very inexpensively. Make sure they are in the front because of the shadows. πŸ™‚ drgnlvr

I have glass cabinets too but i brought a special one for my Windstones, i would be scared to put a large one on a single shelf on my old cabinets and i see people have three sometimes thats brave!
I have very toughened glass in my cabinet!

You can see the old cabinet the left with a few Dragons i have two more huge ones of them

I have a couple of Ikea displays, but the display I like best came from a Hallmark store that was going out of business and selling off their fixtures. It’s a John Hine Studio display, glass walls and shelves. The shelves are pretty thick, but I still wouldn’t dare cram them much fuller than they already are.

Store closing sales are useful; you might look for one of those. The displays can sell off pretty fast, though. Or if you can find a craftsman like drgnlvr did, that would be great too. πŸ™‚ Good luck!

All of mine are currently displayed on wooden shelves on the wall. I have a cherry and glass curio cabinet but I’m not sure of the weight limit each shelf can hold which is why my windstones are not in there at the moment.

I really want to add them in there but the last thing I need to happen is a domino effect. πŸ˜•

My most wanted list: Peacock kitty wizard, carnelian mouse wizard, copper patina frog wizard, autumn leaf poads, pumpkin spice kitties

Oh, I still have it! But it’s at my mom’s house for the next 4 (or more) years while I’m overseas. I’ve dealt with military movers my whole life, but I learned what to trust them with and what not to – if given a choice – pretty early. Only the smallest, most compact (curlies, poads) Windstones came with me, and none of my displays.

*sniff* But at least it looks nice at my mom’s… with my BVF OW and a couple more of my prettiest Windstones on display.

I’ve looked at the Ikea glass display cases but the glass used on the shelves are really thin. I’d be afraid to put my larger pieces on them. When we move, we’ll probably get some wooden bookcases with glass fronts.

You guys all have really nice ones. I would love to go for a big/tall hutch to display mine in like a lot of you have, but my apartment is much too small to fit one.
My main concern is how much my glass shelves can hold.

I am getting an RF Old Warrior in the mail sometime this week and Id like to put it between my Black Gold Male and Scratcher (I dont think it would fit very well between the Lap and Mother dragon on the bottom). But I’m not sure about how much the glass holds. Anyone know what the average is? (I got the shelving unit from Ikea)

Its holding 15 pounds right now on the middle shelf where Id like to put the OW, and the OW is about another 15 pounds. Would 30 be too much for the average shelf? I just dont want it to break and crash onto the other dragons below.

If you go on ikea’s website and look up your cabinet it should tell you how much weight it can hold. I know the glass selves in mine only hold 15lbs.

I remember hearing bad stories about people’s glass shelves breaking and breaking all their windstones… so I’d say make sure you know how much it can take before you do put anything more on it… like Purpledoggy said about the website.
