I know many of you like to paint PYO’s, but I don’t know you’re expertise on mural painting. I was wondering what type of paint would be the best for painting a mural in the baby’s nursery? Acrylic, Tempera, regular wall paint?
I tried googling it, but I couldn’t find much information. Help please! 😉I used combinations of paints…
acrylics and latex wall paints mostly…although on a few parts I did use some of those oil based stencil paints…
started with a large part of latex wall paint…then did the smaller objects with acrylics…and did details with it…and the oil paint….
Acrylic and latex wall paints…preferably semi gloss or less…don’t go with the super glossy stuff. Here’s some pics of a mural job I did year before last….I’ve gotten alot better since then. This was the nursery of a friend of mine. 😀
Yup, latex and acrylic. The walls were done in latex, and the mural I did w/ acrylic cheapo craft paint. Worked like a charm…..
I’m doing another nursery in May…I didn’t take pics of the last ones I did….

As everyone said latex wall paint with Acrylics for details and stuff. Have fun and post pics.
*** Make sure that your walls have been painted with latex, some places (especially older) may have been painted with oil based paints and the acrylics or latex won’t stick. If your walls have been painted with oil you’ll have to get a special ‘oil to latex primer before you paint.
*** Also, YOU should not be painting with latex paint when you are pregnant! And ‘well ventellated room’ does not mean just opening the windows. It means actually sucking the air out of the room! Acrylics are okay because there are no fumes associated with them.
I had to give my sister this lecture (she’s due in April) and so now get to piant her nursery for her. And she won’t let me be creative 🙁
I just use acrylics over the latex-painted walls, or the same latex that I use on the walls.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmActually, my OB told me it was fine to paint as long as we were using latex. Oils are a different story. So, paint I did, with both babies. I felt fine, it was towards the end of each trimester…
I actually painted the above mural while pregnant…I never stopped painting at all for any of my pregnancies…but then again I have an art addiction. 🙄
I also agree with the acrylic over standard latex house paint. I mostly use acrylic when I paint murals, but try not to mix glossy paints with flat, it can look funny. Also, I’ve found that metallics can flake. I would check with your OB about the latex paint, I wouldn’t advise it, only because of the fumes, but the acrylic shoudn’t be a problem. Make sure you post progress shots!!! And have fun!
Thanks dragonmistress and foxfeather, because I was wondering the same thing about whether or not I should be painting with wall paint. I will ask my OB/GYN about it too!
I am glad you all said to use latex wall paint and then acrylics with the details because ironically, that is what KC and I were planning on doing, although we weren’t sure about whether or not to use acrylics or tempera. The only reason we considered tempera paint is because we found some we could buy in large bottles for a good price. We went to Hobby Lobby to find some acrylic paints in large amounts, but we couldn’t find any.Does acrylic paint go a long way when it comes to painting a wall, or does it run out quickly? The details we will do are animals, flowers, and stuff like that because it’s a noah’s ark mural.

I will post pics once we start painting it, but we need to get rid of a queen size bed first!If you have a Michael’s or a A.C. Moore by you, you can get large bottles of Delta paint in the primary colors. I would stay away from tempra, it can be unpredictable, and doesn’t mix well with acrylic. I find that my 2 oz bottles go a long way, but I usually have the primary and black and white in bigger bottles. Also, I usually do blocks of the wall at a time, ie. grass all at once, then sky, etc, then go back and do the detail work, but that’s just what works for me.
