This is a sad tale of my Gryphon I got on Ebay. I emailed the seller with instructions on how to pack it (double box), and even retyped those instructions on the paypal receipt, but unfortunately, the seller didn’t read the paypal receipt or the email before he mailed the statue to me. After that, I pretty much knew it would be a lost cause because the seller’s response to my email after it was sent was that he thought it was packed “fine”, but even if it wasn’t, it was insured. *sign*

The fact that he needed to remind me it was insured, hinted to me that he probably did an awful job packing. I knew I’d be emotionally attached to the piece once it came, so I even told my little sister beforehand that if anything was wrong with it, that she was going to have to force me to claim the insurance money on it. And to no surprise, it came with both ears and one paw and the tail broken. But besides the busted areas, he was GORGEOUS! I instantly fell in love, so I told my sister to hide it from me till I can take it back to UPS so I wouldn’t get attached, but she fell in love with it too!!! She even convinced me that I was skilled and motivated enough to repair it. My other sister convinced me as well, saying that these defects would be battle scars and he would have an interesting story behind him. She even wanted me to name it immediately so I’d be less willing to return it! Personally, I don’t want to spend money on broken items, but I just do not want to think of that beautiful thing in the trash. I’m so impressed with the color and paint job. So… I will fix him up 🙂 I think it will just make him rather personal.
I thought I’d post pictures of the process. Here are a few I took after I got him but I had already started the reconstruction.

      His missing ears:

      Some of the larger pieces:

This picture is of his leg and tail. I forget to take pictures immediately after I got him, so I had already started the process of putting him back together. In that picture you can see two large chunks that I was able to glue back together rather nicely.

More pictures to come. I’ve been gluing all night.

Oh poor baby. 😥 Go to the seller and ask for your money back. Or at least something. That’s just awful. What a…. I don’t know what to say. I’m just crying for your beautiful griff.

OH NO! What a shame! I hate it when sellers do this kind of thing! It’s just awful! That’s a bad break too. Good luck fixing it. Poor little guy! I hope you didn’t pay and arm and a leg for it!

This was that pretty stripey one you got for $80, right? Poor thing. That’s terrible. Good luck fixing it. I’m rooting for you.

I’d definately ask for a partial refund considering he didn’t follow your request on how to pack the griffin.

I didn’t know about asking for double boxing at the time I got my Black Male Unicorn (all the others off ebay came fine in one box) and he arrived with his tail broken off and his horn pulled out of the socket. I talked it over with the seller and he refunded about 1/3 of the cost since I really wanted to keep it.

The thing that gets me is people hide behind the “I can’t be held responsible for any damage caused by the postal service” clause in these cases. I’m sorry, but, failing to take into account the well-known tendency towards carelessness in postal and shipping services when packing a large, heavy and breakable item is tantamount to neglect. Have they never received a broken item before (as well as unbroken ones) and wondered why some arrive intact and others don’t?

I wish there could be some standard for packaging certain types of items in eBay’s rules. I think everyone could agree that double-boxing is the best (if not only) way to ship such items safely. I’m sure most serious collectors of breakables would be happy to foot the bill for better packaging. And if the Seller fails to provide even somewhat adequate packaging, it’s easier for the Buyer to get compensation for something that was definitely not their fault (especially in this case).

I HATE it when people do not do something as simple as double boxing!!!
I’m so glad my supplier in Sacramento knows how to pack even if he does not keep the original boxes

Grrr. I would at the very least leave a neutral feedback!

Please let us see pictures when you have him fixed up!

it does at least look like large enough pieces that hopefully you can put him back together easily

That’s awful, Lokie. What a lousy seller, and this was even a stripy griff. What a pity.I hope you can fix him, but it seems you’ll have to be filling in a few cracks.

Ugh! What a ninny seller! 👿
But, I would still talk to UPS about a refund. I’ve heard that UPS will refund you AND let you keep the broken item. Especially since he’s just smashed to bits. Why ANYONE, other than a collector, would want to keep broken and ruined items is beyond me. But, before you repair him further, I would look into it. That’s what I’ve been told anyhow (about keeping the damaged one) And I’ve heard too that you’ll see a refund from UPS in about a week.

I know you want to keep it, but I would at least ask for a partial refund. Also, as for packing… USPS and UPS will ONLY refund if they determine that packing was adequate and it was their fault. Sometimes you have to get a note from them saying packing from the seller was inadequate. Think about it… the PO is not going to pay for something that was not their fault.

Really, that is some horrible damage. Its gonna take some skillz to fix it. I would attemt to get some back cuz it may not be worth what you paid for it. Well, it was before it was shipped, but just not now. Sorry for your loss… he was lovely.

I think you should absolutely talk to UPS! I had a TV that got broken, kept the TV and got my insurance $$.

There is a thread back a few days that talks about fixing these guys. I have one that was in a bunch of peices too. Iglued him together using Elmer’s White Glue and it worked great. I am now in the process of making molds of good areas from polymer clay to help with constructing the areas that didn;t have stuff to glue back on. It is working pretty well. I’m using veggie oil on the griff to prevent the poly clay from sticking, and again on the inside of the polyclay after it has been baked and cooled.

Let us know how you make out!
