Did anyone else watch the parade? There was a great float of 2 dragons engaged in a battle around a castle. At least one if not both of the dragons were supposed to shoot flames out of his mouth but it wasn’t working while it was in view of HGTV’s camera. Trader Joe also had a great float of underwater critters including an awesome sea turtle. Plus there were a lot of horses – 2 teams of Clydesdales pulling floats plus a bunch of mounted teams. A friend got me hooked on watching the parade several years ago – it’s just amazing what they can do with flowers. At least this year it wasn’t pouring rain.

I haven’t watched that parade for many years, but it sounds like there was a lot of neat stuff! I’ll have to check the web later and see if I can find some images from the parade.

      O.O!! *drools*

I totally forgot about the Rose Parade, gah! I love watching it, but we don’t have television XD Guess I’ll have to scour the interwebs now!

Has anyone else watched the Dirty Jobs episode where they break them down after the parades? It looked very neat, smelly but neat.

I saw the parade and the dragon float. The fire was coming out of both dragons’ mouths when I saw it — very cool. The Ewok float and all the people dressed in Star Wars costumes were fun too.

This had to be the best Rose Parade I’ve ever seen! They had three platoons of STORMTROOPERS, and EWOKS, and DARTH VADER running around! I mean, dude, that was so awesome I nearly peed my pants! Normally the Rose Parade is neat, but boring. This time totally owned, though. The dragon float DID breath fire (we were watching channel 5, I think). Both dragons plumed out flames. It was great.

Did you guys know that they start putting up all the seats and stuff like a month and a half before the parade? The archery range we go to is right around there, so my dad and I are down there two or three times a week, and they start putting up the seats at the beginning of November. It’s mind boggling how much work goes into this parade.

I saw some of it, but there is only so much I can take. My mom watches it religiously and cries every year. I dont get it ๐Ÿ˜• I did see the one being pulled by the clydesdales and I saw some stormtroopers, but most of the show was three people talking….and they were very boring. My brother and I got to help stick flowers on one of these floats when we were reeal little. It is quite cool what they can do with flowers.

If you are looking for images try the HGTV website – I watch it on that chanel as they show it without commercial interruption. It is so frustrating when a really cool float comes along and they cut away to a commercial. I have to admit I taped the first part and fast forwarded through all the marching bands. The Star Wars floats were great! And one of the OK flights had a rocket man who really flew. I agree with Chessie – this year was the best!

Nope, I didn’t see it. If someone find the photos, could you post them? ๐Ÿ˜€

I don’t know abotu taking down the float’s but I know helping decorater them is a blast! You get to see every float up close and personal. I’ve helped decorate many floats over a period of about four years. It was fun going to decorate the floats every year with my uncles, cousins, father, and sisters. Then they started making you pay for the privledge because it got to popular of an event. But I have some great memories. Like the time I was in about a hundred pictures because me and my dad were asigned to pick flowers off their stems in this flower room right near the line of tourists that pay to get an early view of the floats. Or watching big bird shed thousands of yellow petals as they tested him out for the first time fully decorated and then judged him for awards. The best thing was watching it on tv and looking for close ups of areas you personally decorated. The whole nation got to see my family’s patch of yellow roses one year it was great.

That sounds like so much fun! It must be great to actually be a part of it but I can’t believe they make the volunteers pay to work on the floats. Actually, they said on the color commentary that they were short about 100 volunteers this year – the people got held up because of the snow snorms.

Edit: I meant snow storms! I have no idea what a snorm is.

We didnt have to pay, but that was years ago. How times have changed… now you gotta pay to volunteer? Its a sad state of affairs…

I know we found it very annoying. But because of how fun it was to do many people were willing to pay. The year we found out they were charging admission to volunteers we ended up walking in looking at all the float and then leaving because their were far too many people working on them to begin with. It was a sad end of year event.

I’m so out of touch and uncultured sometimes. XD

My friend asked if I wanted to camp out with a mutual friend of ours to see the Rose Parade. I was grumpy about it because we had planned on camping in the Angeles National forest for New Years, away from the city and then this came up! He said that since our mutual friend works for a store that is right on the parade route (Dino’s Computers) he was allowed to bring his RV into the parking lot and stay there for free and it would be a private party with free food and BYOB.

I agreed, grudgingly. I didn’t see the point of seeing a bunch of stupid cheerleaders and loud brassy marching bands blare by, and I didn’t think he was the type to want to see it either.

Then as we were driving into Pasadena New Year’s Eve, I noticed all the people lined up in the streets, camping out on the sidewalks…and I started to wonder…

“Hey, is thing a big deal?”
                “Yeah…”
“Is it like, a worldwide thing?”
“…yeah…Don’t you know what the Rose Parade is?”
                “No…well, yeah, it’s a football parade, right?”
“Well, that’s what it’s supposed to be about. There are floats made of flowers…”
“OH!!!! THAT ONE?!?! WE’RE SEEING THAT ONE I HAD NO IDEA.”

I stopped being a surly curmudgeon after that. ๐Ÿ˜›

So I had front row seats and what a neat theme! The Giant Mother Nature at the head of the parade was amazing! And there were hummingbirds and there was even a bird of paradise that made me squee! And the dragons rocked hard core. And when the Star wars stuff came by, I wanted to pee because I thought it was so frickin cool. 200 stormtroopers make a lot of racket. The Imperial marching band was impressive too.

And the llamas. And the pretty horses. Oh it was wonderful.

But not so wonderful I’d want to camp there again to see it. Gimme National Forest quiet anyday.
