I am interested in the paint your own models, but I was wondering, before I begin, what paints are recommended? Do oil paints work well? I have Golden high flow acrylics, a range of other acrylics, pearl-ex powder pigments, and I also have oil paint and pan pastels. I’ve used them with a variety of my own art.

I specialize in making life like replicas of leaves and flowers.

Hello and welcome to the Forum. 🙂 I don’t do paint-your-owns, but I read information about them and admire the results achieved by others. I’ll let the painters on the Forum answer in detail, however I do know that oil paints are not recommended for the PYOs. Acrylics and pearl-ex powders are commonly used and I think some artists have gotten good results with pastels.

Have fun with your projects! If you feel like posting photos, it would be interesting to see some of your flowers and leaves sometime.

Hello, welcome to the Windstone forums!

As Etruscan said, oil paints are a no go, but everything else you listed is fine.

I am not sure anyone has used Golden High Flow yet on a PYO (at least not that they have mentioned*), but they will work. I have not used them in any capacity but I have heard they have an ink like consistency? People have used inks to stain Windstones, and they are acrylic paints, so there shouldn’t be a problem.

Hope to see finished projects from you in the future, good luck! 🙂

*or they did, and I have just forgotten.

I have never tried using tube-type oil paint, but we do not recommend using any type of oil based paint because it will seal the gypsum, and not allow moisture to escape. If moisture builds up under a film of paint, it might make the paint pull away from the surface, if the piece is exposed to extreme temperature changes.
Small areas of oil paint, or lacquer paint (like nail polish, or metallic markers) should be fine, just as long as most of the sculpture can breathe.

Thanks for the recommendation not to use oil paints. I haven’t ordered a model yet but I am eyeing the PYO dragon. If I don’t order it this week, it will be next week. It will probably be a few weeks before I get it.

Why I was hesitant with acrylics was because my experience painting La-doll Premier type clay. It seemed prone to chipping off and I am a bit of a clutz. So far I’ve found oils to work well with air dry resin clays. Acrylic sometimes dries slightly tacky, especially on some polymer clay types. High Flow acrylics are really nice. I like that I can achieve a smoother texture on them without showing much of the brush strokes.

This is some of the stuff I paint. I cast leaves and flowers in silicone, then I use the molds to make replicas out of clay.

Sorry that didn’t work, There’s no way to preview to see if my image links are working properly?

                No preview yet, unfortunately.

Experimenting a bit with your links … a couple of them show, anyway. Very nice!

Would it be okay if I were to order a PYO dragon and let’s say I add onto it, like have it wearing a leaf or make a base for it? I’, playing around with the idea. I have something in mind.

Wearing a leaf should be all right, and probably making a base also as long as it is clear that the base is an addition. People have drilled holes and added small gems, and that is OK. What you can’t do is materially change the sculpt by carving away or adding pieces to change the shape.

                        OHH! Your leaves are beautiful!!
You have African Violets! Gosh, I remember African Violet lust. They are addicting. I had about 40 different cultivars. They take over your life after awhile!
And bugs! I collect bug models too. (Now I primarily stick to collecting things that don’t need care)
I Loved looking at your pics!

It is ok to add leaves and a base.

Thank you Melody. It arrived today. The dragon looks really pretty. I’m torn between two ideas. One is to paint it in green and brown shades w/ an attempt to make a tree for its background and a removable leaf hat for it. The other idea is to paint it like a monarch caterpillar and try to make a little caterpillar buddy for it.

I am raising 3 monarch butterflies this year. They just passed their caterpillar stage yesterday. About 7-12 days I expect some butterflies.

A 3rd idea is to paint one like an adult polyphemus moth. I’ve been raising them this summer and last summer.

Update. I’m thinking of going with the moth idea for my first PYO. If I decide to sell it later I’ll use that towards buying another to paint the other two ideas.

Reason for the decision: One eye does not fit. I swapped out for a couple swarovski rivoli stones (crystal vitrail medium) for eyes that give it the moth look really well. I still will try to contact about the eye. I might never know when I’ll need them for another project.

I’ll post my progress on the PYO forum when I have my idea drafted up.

Oh lovely work. Please do post the results of your PYO work. The detail painting on your leaf and flower casts is beautiful in detail and subtle shading and should translate amazingly on a PYO. Looking forward to it!
