Well, good news is that the suppor has held and is much stronger then my old support. Unfortunatly, when the tail fell a lot of areas got stratched or smoshed so Ive had to go over and smooth out a lot of my work. I have to set the dragon aside for a little while due to school and medical reasons but it shouldnt take to long to finish it once I can work on it again. For now, here are some pics of it at it present state and some pics of Sheridan, the custom shoulder dragon I was given a long time ago that inspired me to do this project. She is very old and a lot of her paint has rubbed off from me constantly wearing her wherever I would go. Ive tried very hard to make my dragon as different from Sheridan’s design so that when I sell it, there are no legal problems. Ive think Ive done a really good job at that.

Well, just avoided disaster. The support for the tail failed yesterday. Luckily it did it right as I was there so I was able to catch the tail before it got too smooshed. Ive put the tail back on and rebuilt the support with a stronger material. Unfortunatly this will set me back few days as I cant even touch the dragon because the new material for the support takes a few days to dry. At least my dragon isnt distroyed and I will be able to easily fix the smooshed areas. I’ll put up pictures after the support is dry.

Well, I still have a good bit to go on my dragon. I havnt been able to work much on it cause of school, but there is a lull in my school work so I am working non stop on it now. The tail should be finished tonight and so should most of the belly area. I have a goal to have this done but saturday. Even if I dont meet that deadline, I plan to have this done over the next week, no matter what. Well, the basic scaling at least. Cleaning it might take longer as I want the scales to be as smooth as I can get them.

So, while moving some things around, the dragon got his face smushed a bit. Thankfully, I planned for this. I was able to fix his face perfectly but Ive had to start the scales over again. It wasnt to bad, though. I hadnt been able to add anymore scales because I had been sick so it didnttake me long at all to make up for the set back. So here is an update, Ive changed the scale pattern a bit to make it much less uniform and more realistic. The pictures show about 1 and 1/2 nights work thus far.

Your new attempt looks pretty good! What is the yellow sculpting material? I’ve never seen that before.

Its actually non drying polymer clay. I didnt actually mean to get it in yellow, though. The color was hard to find on the boxes and since all the boxes looked alike, I kinda asumed they would just be white or something genaric(BOY was I surprised when I opened the boxes). Under it, though, is regular polymer clay that I baked before getting to the real sculpting. I found this to be a great way to make an armeture for this as a regular wire and foil armeture eventually drooped or bent under the weight of the clay. The none drying polymer clay is great also because not only is it easy to fix mistakes from acssidental scratches and stuff, if it falls, it wont shatter but just get slightly smooshed, which is very easy to fix. The best part about the non drying clay also is that after Ive made the mold, nearly all of it will be re-usable for another dragon. This way, I can make maybe 10-15 different dragons before I have to buy more clay.
There is one other reason I choose the non dry. For my health. I have an old injury on my wrist which hurts like heck if I try to work too hard with it. If I had used regular bakable polymer clay, I would be spending hours trying to knead with one hand so as not to hurt myself. Non backable clay softens MUCH quicker and with a lot less work, though. It only takes a quick roll in my hands before it is soft enough to work with. One last thing about why I chose this then I will stop babbling. This non dry clay was CHEAP! It only cost me about $3 per box as opposed to $5-6 for the bakable clay. and I think I got more clay per box. So ya, thats what it is!

                How heavy is is?
What do you plan to do with the wings?

The wings will actually be made of fabric and will have a wire to stick into the dragon. They will look like they just popped out between the scales. I might actually add a little appendage to the actual dragon, like the very base of an arm to connect the ling two to make it flow with the dragon more. If I do, I’ll do that before I finish scaling the shoulder area.

I’m FINALLY back on this forum…. A while back I had started work on a shoulder dragon and had posted some pics of it here. Well, I got to the point that it was only 1 days work, 1 DAYS WORK away from being completed…….. and the darn thing fell of a table and shattered >.<
The only pics I still have of it before it broke are these.

After all the work I put into it, I REALLY didnt want to start again and have the same thing possibly happen… so I spent a while doing research on sculpting and such… and after so very long, I began work again on making a shoulder dragon and now I am nearly done already! All thats left is sketching on the scales!I plan to use the wings I made for the previous shoulder dragon on this one. Either way, I would like to get some opinions on it before I finish the scales because once thats done, all the muscle detail will be harder to see. I tried to base this dragon off of a number of different animals. The neck and uper arms are meant to be an exageration of a horse neck and shoulders, its paws are based off of canines, and its tail is going to be a cross between a crocodile and a sea snake. The holes in its head are to allow for plastic gems to be put in and the eyes are empty so that I can put in plastic or hand painted glass eyes. It should only take me a week or so to finish up the scales now (IF my free time doesn’t get completly taken up by school work) but no matter what I plan to have this dragon finished and make a mold of it by the end of this month!

You should look around for cheap toys then. I have this old dragon toy thats a bit banged up now and doesnt work too well anymore but its already programed to move its head around randomly and every now and then roar. Once I am done with this dragon, Im going to see if I can take the toy apart and and make a dragon to stick it in. If you look at garage sales you can probably find a lot of toys like that for really cheap.

Im still looking at different coloring options. Ive seen some dyes for latex that might work but they cost a lot around here. Im also looking into some special paints that work on latex. I’ll be working on the dragon more this week and since Im getting a break from school I just might have almost all the scales done before christmas. After that, it should only take a day or two to do a resin mold and then another couple of days to do the final latex cast. I’ll post more pics as the piece pregresses.

Im still putting in the details on the plaster cast.. and I have a few breaks that need to be fixed… but in its final form it will be made of latex and is fit to sit comfortably on any shoulder and will not fall without being attached. Its also going to have some fabric dragon fly wings which I will work on this week. The tail, which you might notice it currently lacks, will be made seperate and attached in its final latex form. Im still figuring out how to make the scales as I go. They are some what based off of a windstone edition dragon I have but mostly off the scales of my guppy and koi fish I own…honestly… Im surprised at how it is coming considering this is the first time ever I have attempted to carve something… also the first time ever I used a Dremel tool that my dad got me… heck, it will just plain be the first latex shoulder dragon I have ever made!…. anyways, tell me what you all think… Im making it as a thank you gift for a man who gave me some near show quality koi for free so I want it to be good when I give it to him.
