Melody, thank you so much for shedding some light on where Blackfire came from. He is such a cherished part of my collection. It’s good to share him with all of the people here.
I don’t think so. The spots don’t look like paint. And the rest of the paint is so good and so professional, there is not even a hint of brown anywhere on it (or even green for that matter). Would someone really have been able to do a repaint this good 20 years ago and then put him in retail store? That doesn’t seem likely, does it? Did people repaint them that long ago?

As far as I can tell, that area between the end of the felt is just the color of the unpainted (or unfinished piece). I don’t know how these were made. It reminds me of some pieces I have seen when people do ceramics. He’s never sat in anything except a glass display case in my homes. So, he must have come that way.

Mine has the same purple gems and the same painted outline around the gems, only mine has his outline painted in blue. Mine also has more of the painted blue, violet and gold dots on him. This may be a different test paint version of the same prototype.
By the way, my dragon feels like he’s found a long lost brother. 😀
Thanks! Yours is beautiful too. Great to have a sibling out there! 😀 I guess I never realized how unique he was until now. Makes me appreciate it that much more…..
Thanks to everyone for all the great feedback. Blackfire is a treasure in my collection and he has always been a subject of discussion from people that see him. I’ve posted a few more pictures as well to show what I’ve been saying….
He actually does have a series of gold accents on his claws, tail, tips of his wings and on various points of his body. He also has the Pena 86 copyright stamp on the back near his tail like the others. Beneath the jewel in his forward are some blue and purple spots too. You can’t see them well from the angle I have photgraphed him.
As I said, I ‘ve had him for twenty years and this is how he looked the day I got him.
I checked him against my other dragons (Green, white and Peacock males that I have). He has the same wing design as they do. There is a small gap at the very tip of the wings before they attach to the body. He has felt on the bottom that has the Windstone stamp, just like the others. He came from a retail store, so I doubt he is a fake. There were only two stores near me that sold them. One was a Wicks N Sticks candle store and the other was this Cigar store that sold these statues.
There are a few spots on him that seem to have a a violet tint. The chest is one spot and if the light hits it just right, it really shows up.
His only accents are a little gold (claws and on the face). No other colors. However, if the light hits him at a certain angle, there’s a little violet tint.
I named him Blackfire…..
Very nice to know I’m not alone in my appreciation for them…..
And I put the links up…
I need to put up three more posts before I can past links. So, ignore the next two…..
Folks, since I’m new to this, I’ll plead ignorance. I have pictures but no publicly accessible place to post them. Suggestions?
Hello all. I am new to the forum, but have been collecting Windstone Editions since the 1980’s. Among my collection is a unique item. Around 1986 or 1987, I was walking through a mall in Pittsburgh near where I lived. I passed a cigar store that had on display a Male Dragon from Windstone Editions. I had purchased them there before. This one was different. It was completely black with orange eyes. I asked the owner and he said it was a special order for someone that ended up not buying it. He also told me that it was one of only five made. I’ve never thought to verify this until now, but since I’ve had it for almost 20 years, I wanted to try to establish some sort of history for it. Can anyone help verify this or recommend how I could learn some history on this piece? Thanks!!
