most importantly they cught the kids and Everyone was OK.
I’m sorry you have to go thru this with your Windstones though. I would NOT want to lose my head!!January 21, 2009 at 9:51 pm #749632I am going to give you some very solid advice. Before accepting anything talk to a lawyer. I am not sure what the laws are in MA but in Indiana the kid’s insurance would have to pay for all the repairs including the repairs to the foundation. The foundation damage was aggravated damage made worse by the impact and he should be liable for the repair. If he has a cap or an upper limit to his insurance you are entitled too all of that plus you have the legal recourse to sue the parents of at least the owner of the and perhaps the driver as well because he is a minor for the difference to what they paid you and what you had to spend to fix the house.
Again these are the laws in Indiana and MA may be different but this could be $30,000-40,000 worth of damage. You should also be able to sue for court fees, etc. I know there are a lot of people out there who think lawyers are out to get them but you want to be sure you don’t get cheated by the insurance company. And the insurance company will try to cheat you if they can.
Sorry you’re having so much trouble. Maybe this a blessing in disguise thing? Getting your foundation fixed and not having to pay for it?

January 22, 2009 at 4:34 am #749634Oh for the love . . . I’m so sorry, drag0n! 🙁 What a mess. And because the driver didn’t have a license, I bet he doesn’t have insurance either. Yes, setsunawolf is right: talk to a lawyer. This could get complicated, and it’d be a really good idea to know what your resources are.
In the meantime, that stupid, stupid kid. :nea: And stupid owner of the car, too. Their behavior was totally inexcusable. I mean, what are they, a couple of monkeys? No, monkeys have more sense than those two. Brine shrimp have more sense. Single-celled organisms living on the underside of damp rocks have more sense. Both of these fools are going to have this mess hanging over their heads for a long time, not that that makes me feel the least bit sorry for them. From the sound of things, they both needed a serious wake-up call. 👿 What idiots!

The cat will get over herself sooner or later. Definately get a lawyer and find out what your options are, this may take a while, so don’t let it stress you out worse than you already are.
Sorry your Windstones got broken, at least you are a good repairer and shouldn’t have too much trouble fixing them good as new again. But I feel for you, especially in the brand new one, ouch.
Try not to bicker with Shaun too much, alot of that is just due to stress that you are both under, try to keep that in mind and not to let it undermine your relationship. One of the things that near drove my husband and I to divorce in our early years was money stresses, we ended up filing bankruptcy, but it saved our marriage, so it was worth it.
Pity food isn’t that bad, one of my dear friends has a sister that does that, cleans out everything that is out of date on a regular basis and gives it to her, she brings us the things she doesn’t like, which happens to be stuff we adore. Her sister buys good stuff…but as a single person living alone, usually doesn’t eat it all, so she gives it to my friend before it goes south so it won’t go to waste. We take it and do the greedy hand wash with our hands, cause it is usually stuff we won’t spend the money on ourselves, but we really like.
Anyway, take deep breaths…find out what you will need to do, and take it one thing at a time. Also, since things have just gotten a bit tight for you guys, I highly recommend a book called The Complete Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn. When I lost my job when I was 4 months pregnant, this book helped us make it through the 10 months we had to struggle along on only one income. I still use it now, you should be able to find it on eBay for pretty cheap.
Anyway, hang in there and I am so glad you guys aren’t hurt and that your house wasn’t seriously compromised.

January 23, 2009 at 1:48 am #749641Oooh! I have a humidifier if you need one! You’d probably need more than one for a house your size, but I can ship it your way if you need it! That will help with the static.
Also, odd as it may sound, do you have dryer sheets? If you do, take one and rub it all over Ein. Seriously helps with the static problem! My dogs, particularly Soot, since his fur is a little stiffer on his back, especially after being groomed, gets a lot of static. He also likes to lay right by the radiator all the time, which doesn’t help. Do this as needed. My mom likes the lilac ones, so every so often, he’ll smell nice too (even if he looks at me funny 😀 ). The dryer sheets should help! You can probably reuse one once or twice as well (use a new one… not a used one).

January 23, 2009 at 7:10 am #749644Oh before I forget – I don’t remember if you have forced air or what for your heat. Just setting out an open pan or wide topped container of water in a room will help add moisture to the air. If you have floor vents, put a container in front of the vent, so when the heat turns on and blows into the room, it will have a greater effect. With the kitten (and the ferrets when they are out), you might want something sturdy. 😉 If you have any radiators (I don’t remember seeing any), you would put a container on the radiator. I know they make cast iron ‘humidifiers’ through stove places and LL Bean that have a grating or lattice top (some look like tea kettles), but they aren’t cheap. Just a pot, or decent sized bowl, of water will do. It doesn’t have to be filled very high… you can always refill it. Cheap and easy and should help with the dry winter air.
It may take a couple of days to really notice a difference if the air is really dry. The water will probably evaporate quicker the first few days, with it being so dry (or if something decided to drink or play with the water ). If a room is really large or very long, for 2-4 days you may want to set something at opposite ends until moisture comes back into the air. Static is bad for computers and sensitive electronics too, so it’s not a bad idea to do.
January 23, 2009 at 8:29 pm #749645That kid must have been mortified. It’ll also put a lid on how much of a tale he can and can’t get away with, since Shaun will be there to umm…temporize. I’m glad to hear he’s got something going his way. Be sure to talk to the lawyer. Also the driver should have criminal charges brought against him, and so should the car’s owner, because he let an unlicensed driver drive his vehicle.
