Ok so I ordered this amazing custom Anubis Mask off of ebay. It is from Austria and I just received it today. I took it out and my hands are covered in black paint. Its almost 100 here so I could see where the paint would melt. The mask is smudge. 🙄 I was wondering if there is anything I can do to stop it from melting. I will be wearing this to Dragon-Con for a few hours at a time and I do not want it to melt on my face. Also what kind of paint should I buy to touch it up? 😕
I think everyone’s afraid to say anything and have you try their suggestion only to make things worse. 😀
Do you know what kind of paint was used on it originally (acrylic, for example)? Is it still smearing now that it’s cooled off? Maybe all it needs is a clear-coat. Something meant for outdoors would probably be more heat-resistant. Then again, mail trucks usually don’t have air-conditioning, so it was probably baking in its box until it got to you. I dunno that it would get hot enough while you were walking around with it on to melt like that again. As for touching up the gold, it doesn’t look that different from the gold on the toenails of Windstones. If you have one of those Decoart pens, I’d pump some out and brush it on…since they’ve got that whole brush-stroke look going on those bits. You might want to put some on a piece of black paper and hold it up next to it for comparison first, just to make sure the color is close enough, though.

Any suggestions is very appreciated.It has been 3 days and it is still wet in some places. I have emailed the seller through ebay about what paint he used but haven’t heard anything back. He hasn’t even left feed back yet and I have given him positive feedback.
Do u think I should just strip the black off and repaint it with a more heat resistant paint? I have thought about clear coating it once it is touched up or repainted.I don’t think I’d strip the paint. Without knowing what kind of paint it is or what the mask itself is made of, some really bad things could happen. It might be that the paint is fine, but it’s incompatible with the mask material. It’s interesting that the paint is still wet after 3 days. Very weird.
There are so many variables that I’m afraid to give advice!

Clear coating the paint, without knowing what kind of paint it is and why it’s melting, could just make it worse. Normal acrylic spray on clear coats are not compatible with all paint types, and it’s almost always a bad idea to apply it to ‘wet’ paint.
How frustrated you must be! Even in very hot conditions, most quality paints should not melt as you’ve described. You say it’s still staying wet or tacky? Hmm. I wish I were more help. If you don’t get an answer on the paint type, you will have to make a decision… either file a paypal claim (at the risk of not getting to keep it) or eat the problem so to speak. If it was mine and I decided to keep it, I’d remove as much of the ‘wet’ paint areas as possible without using any chemicals or solvents, then test some nice acrylic to see if it had any reaction, and re-do it. But that’s just me. Good luck!!

My art: featherdust.comHmmm…. I agree with every one else about finding out what the mask materials and paint are from the seller. Also, can you re-check the listing? were materials listed there? What was it wrapped in when it arrived? Does the packing material show any signs of paint? Like it may have been still damp when it was packed? are there any marks from packing material on the finish of the mask itself? Some paints especially oils, enamels and automotive paints take forever to dry and cure and can be adversely affected by heat and more importantly humidity during this process.
A stop-gap measure might be to find a cooler place in the house, basement if you have one, or place it by a fan to cool while you wait for a response from the seller.
Ohhh, and you may want to try a search through DeviantArt or other art websites, you may luck out and find your seller there as well.
I am positively no help for your situation, but did want to comment that the mask is AWESOME! It will be really neat to wear during your convention – provided of course you get the paint situation figured out.
The heat we have been having everywhere is enough to melt paint, I actually worry a bit about Windstones travelling in this weather. I know I wouldn’t ship any candles this time of year lol
Just common sense tells me if the paint loosened up due to extreme heat (I think you said it came from down under and we are just now learning to live in their heat!) – it should reset within a couple of days if left in a dry in a cool environment and if not, then yeah you have trouble on your hands. I can’t give any suggestions because I have NO idea, but if it were mine I would try to dab the wet paint up/off the mask (which was probably made of a paper mache? or could it be leather?) and repaint it or touch it up and then seal it…..if you have enough time :/ BUT DON’T TAKE ANY OF WHAT I SAID AS GOOD INFORMATION – because I know nothing at all about paint.
But that mask is way cool, and worth saving somehow! 🙂
My roomie’s guess is the mask is paper mache and the paint was an enamel. That type of paint doesn’t set correctly on paper mache and she thinks that is why you are having this issue.
My roommate says to put it in the freezer to make the paint set again, and then coat it with a craft clear spray on. After you have touched up the paint smears w/ craft pens. Use a clear coat that says it would be good for paper mache. She does not guarantee it will work but that is her suggestion. Good Luck!Looking for Blue Fawn Baby Kirin
