Hehe.. yeah, it’s funny that you say that, since my original thought on his name was going to be something to do with the beach on a sunny day, but I couldn’t come up with anything that sounded good, and I kept getting pulled into his blue feathers which remind me of clouds π
I would have called him “Heaven and Earth.” The rock and tail remind me of the heavens and the upper part of the body remind me of earth.

November 19, 2010 at 8:55 pm #829953Thanks for the compliments guys π I have a lot of painting to do this weekend, but luckily I got this guy done before I had to start painting more phoenixes! I took some pictures with my cell phone as I was painting him – he took 20 hours to get done, and I blame the scales! I love how he turned out though. His scales remind me of an artichoke, so I’ve named his paint scheme just that. My boyfriend piped up with the idea of shortening it to Artie, and I think the name is cute and suits him well. So, Artie it is!
I made an image out of the pictures I took with my cell phone, also describing what I was doing in each picture. The picture quality isn’t good but I think you can see decently the different changes that came about as I was painting him. Finished pictures are at the end π
(This image is too big for the forums, so if you’d like to see/read it, follow this link:)

And finally – finished pictures! The only thing that I changed from the last step to these images was that I antiqued the pebbly scales. These pics were also taken in the late afternoon sunlight so he looks a little more green than he does in person and in normal inside light. Still, I think they came out well π
And Artie with his fuzzy – my very first, with adorable gold eyes! I love him!

I decided before I got this one that he was going to be inspired by Falkor from the Neverending Story because the Kirin’s scales always reminded me of Falkor’s scales. He’s a bit pinker than I had imagined him to be, but I think he will come out good nonetheless.
Here’s the image that I am using as inspiration:
I will be interferencing some of the scales with gold and some with green interference to mimic the look of Falkor’s scales that you can see in the picture, and I will be antiquing his mane and tail and probably the rest of his furry areas. I’m not sure if I’ll be doing it to the scales or not, I’ll have to see how it comes out. His belly is tan and it will be interferenced in gold. I have already put some light streaks of gold interference along his tail, around his eyes and on his nose.
I bugged Susie to send me brown eyes because I realized after I ordered him that I had a definite color scheme I wanted to go with and I had ordered the grey eyes at first. Well a couple of days later they put a bunch more Kirins up so I ordered another one with Lavender eyes, and I’m not sure now which looks better on him, brown or lavender – so I’m posting pics of him with both eyes. Let me know what you think looks better! Falkor has brown eyes in the movie but the Kirin doesn’t have to look exactly like him of course π
I will definitely be selling this guy when I’m done with him, so if any of you love pink, keep me on your radar! I’d rather sell here first than on Ebay π
