Melody, I just bought a Woodlore Wizard from a dealer and he had it for a long time so he didn’t know anything about it. I just found out what he was and that he was classified as a gargoyle! That surprised me a lot because I don’t like gargoyles at all and I like this guy a lot. He looks so intent and studious and foresty and wizardy and un-gargoylelike which I associate with the ones I saw in Europe meant to scare away demons by becoming said demons, all ugly and horrid and devily. So what is the story of this non-gargoyle hermity studious forest-dwelling wizard and why is he classified in with the rest of the yooglies? Why isn’t he more well-known? Is he rare? I’ve never been into wizards much, more for dragons, but this guy hooked me right there in the store! drgnlvr

He is with the gargoyles because of the stone finish. He was made when wizards as a subject were in demand. He is a forest wizard, he studies natural things. I don’t know why he is reading a book, he should be bird watching.

Well how about you say the book is a bird watching guide and he glanced down real quick to identify a bird?

Maybe he’s studying herbs, mushrooms or fungi. That would work for a forest wizard. 😉
March 10, 2008 at 2:11 am #676356Unfortunately, I’m still not good at posting pictures, but there is a really good one on astralcastles.com website. I WISH I was more computer-literate and could just send you the link, but I don’t know how to do that either. 😥
Melody, does that mean that there isn’t a “story” about all the leaves in his beard and hair and robe and what mystery/answer he is looking for so intently in that book? To me, he feels like a royal nature spirit exiled, very sad, still part of who he was, and very determined, trying to find the way back to where he was through learning the ancient secrets in that book, and locked in one place in stone forever, as a reminder to the rest of us (me) what we’re here to do so we can get back to who we are and where we came from by learning the ancient secrets of nature. Well! That was unexpected! I really didn’t know that was coming. Maybe that was what hooked me so fast in the store! What else to say? Thank you Melody for making this wizard. Do all the stone finishes fall into the gargoyle category? I have 2 winged wolves and owls and cats and a lion head sconce, they too?March 10, 2008 at 2:44 am #676357Wow, that’s one neat looking wizard. I need to track one down. 8)
Here are the pics from the Astral Castle Encyclopedia.
(I hope they don’t mind me linking them like this)
March 10, 2008 at 3:58 am #676358I love my Wiz Woodlore! Actually I always imagined him in a heavily wooded area, standing outside of a house, which blends in too. Just reading his spellbook…Maybe to help Mother Nature and cast a spell for her or two… *shrugs* He is one of my favorite gargoyles. 😀
March 10, 2008 at 7:18 pm #676359I love my WW, too. Nice to see him being discussed….he doesn’t get much love. 😉 😆
March 10, 2008 at 9:59 pm #676360I’d never really noticed that one before! He’s really nice! 😀 😀 😀

I have 2 winged wolves and owls and cats and a lion head sconce, they too? There wasn’t that much of a story behind him, though he is looking for an answer! He was meant to fit a garden setting with his oakleaf-inspired robes and beard, while he works (more franticly, now) on a way to rectify the mess we have made of the ecology. He was intended to remind gardeners (and everybody) of the need to stay in step with the deep magic of nature. It is a serious task, as you can tell by his expression..
This sculpture won’t hurt the earth either, he is biodegradable, and non toxic, unlike resin sculpture.
A problem with this sculpture is that I designed him to be a garden piece. This means his “display sides” are also the sides and back! Everyone always displays him facing front, so they aren’t great for gift-store shelf display.
Then we never made these in an outdoor material!Mine is outside and he does look great with leaves and dust on him, but he won’t last long out there. Don’t put yours outside! These aren’t cement.
No, the candle lamps and sconces are usually classified in a separate category from the gargoyles, even though they are the same finish. I kinda lump the “stone finish” pieces together, though some stone finish pieces are painted, such as the bunny and the polar bear candle lamps.March 13, 2008 at 8:57 pm #676362I have mine displayed so I always have a side view. Too bad they were never cast in cement….I would love one for my “garden”.
March 13, 2008 at 9:14 pm #676363Man I would LOVE one of these for my garden. Would there be any chance of a similar type statue done as Garden Art? Please? 😉
