I’m having an *extremely* frustrating day. First a lady calls that used to have a dog I have and says she wants her back and starts getting nasty and says she will call the police on me. I said to tell her to go ahead. Well, so the police call just now on my cell (i’m at work) and tell me that they need to look at the dog someone told them I have a starving dog that’s about to die. The dog is skinny because she came to me that way (about a month ago) and I’ve been feeding Canidae dog food (for those that don’t know it’s a higher end, quality food) dry and wet and she’s slowly putting on weight but the key word is slowly. I have another dog that is also underweight that came from a shelter a couple weeks ago. So, it probably looks really bad and against my favor that I happen to have two skinny dogs. I am just praying the cop knows something about dogs and doesn’t try to take them away saying that I’m starving them. They get as much as they want to eat every day in hopes of putting weight on, but I wish they would eat more. The one eats about a bowl a day and the other only eats about a half a bowl or so. Wish me luck. I would be pretty mad, sad, and on and on if I got both my dogs taken away when I took them out of kindness and am doing everything I can to put weight on them.

April 29, 2008 at 6:19 pm #694271That’s peachy.
Let the officer know about the lady who wants that dog back too, so he knows that this call is likely a retaliation call because you will not give the dog to her. Also, make it clear just how long you have had each dog, and show him what you are feeding them, and how. Free feeding with food always available is not indicative of someone who routinely starves their animals.
They usually won’t take an animal unless they really feel that you aren’t doing all you can to care for them properly. So if you prove to them that you are taking good care of them, and explain that their current condition is an improvement from how you got them and that you are trying to get them to healthy weights, they should leave them with you.
Also offer to let them visit the dogs again in a month to check on them. If you are friendly and cooperative and showing you have nothing to hide, then they should be willing to leave things be.
Good luck.

Have your adoption papers so he can see you just got them.April 29, 2008 at 6:41 pm #694273Kyrin wrote:That’s peachy.

Thanks 🙂 When he called he said so what’s up with this dog thing? And I told him the lady wants her back and she’s getting nasty about it and I told her I’m not giving her back she’s my dog and then he said well she says she’s so skinny she’s going to die (back story- this lady owned the dog until about 8 weeks old. She went to a man who had her until about a month ago and the dog is now a year old and NOW the lady wants her back!) so the officer of course has to come check if that’s true or not. I just worry because I have 2 skinny dogs (one from a kill shelter) so it looks bad. I do have one dog that’s a good weight though and several average weight if not plump kitties 🙂
The officers in this town are jerks though- they are the same ones that told me there’s nothing they can do (mind you VERY nastily) when my landlord came into my apartment (old landlord) and stole about half of everything I owned, smashed up many irreplaceable valuables (speaking of which I have a slightly damaged ruby scratcher and a peacock hatching empress I got for my golden birthday that needs to visit you someday!) and stole my timneh african grey parrot she ADMITTED it to the officer even and he still said it’s not their problem! 😥
Ok off my soap box rant now I will let you all know how it goes please pray for me they don’t take my furkids!

And, the shelter director called the officer to tell him that I have another dog that’s skinny and that she was skinny when I got her and she has no reason to believe I’m not feeding her, etc. etc.
April 30, 2008 at 1:25 am #694275I have to agree with Kyrin, and add this:
Did you keep any receipts from your vet visits, your food purchases, anything that you bought for the dogs? Under “normal” circumstances, the humane soc. people look for signs of neglect, to see if there is no food, if the dog lives outside, does it have shelter, water, etc. Even though you might not have papers on your one dog, you should be able to provide records showing regular food purchases, and vet visits. You can use credit card statements as well. You can also ask your vet for copies of the office visit records, and to state the condition of the dog when it was brought in. If the dog is rescue, and in rough shape, it should be noted in the vet’s records that you just adopted the dog.
If you at least provide some of these things, and point out the conditions of the rest of your furbabies, I think it’ll be a lot harder for someone to seriously claim that you are abusing your pets. What reason does this wingnut give for wanting the dog back after all this time? Does this person have a history of mental troubles?
I still think if you can show proof of your ongoing care, along with a statement from your vet, you should be okay. GOOD LUCK!!! We’re pulling for ya from NJ!April 30, 2008 at 2:33 pm #694276tasgrs wrote:I have to agree with Kyrin, and add this:

So the officer looked at her and said well she’s skinny she’s obviously not dying or anything her coat is shiny and she’s happy and her eyes are clear, etc. He pretty much said he’s done with this and it’s not the police’s problem if she wants to sue me then she can but they are done with it (but to call them if she showed up being a crazy). He said he would call her and let her know he saw the dog and that she’s not starving to death which is what she told the officer and she hadn’t even seen the dog since 8 weeks old.
I never thought to keep food receipts- they usually get thrown away. But there’s food sitting out in a bowl and a whole container of 50 pounds of dog food so there’s obviously food in the house 🙂 And God knows how many treats- they have their own kitchen drawer full of bones and chewies and all sorts of goodies. They definitely don’t live outside- I’m in an apartment 😆
So for now the police are done with it but the lady can still sue me. I guess the guy that gave her to me, signed adoption papers with this lady saying he would return her to the lady if he ever didn’t want her or whatever. Well the lady has 300 (yes, 300) dogs and horses on a ranch- what does she need one more for when she’s happy with me?! Anyhow we shall see if I get sued or not 🙁
April 30, 2008 at 3:22 pm #694277😕 Sounds like she should sue the guy and not you (well, if she was going to sue at all, which is just crazy all on its own) if he was the one who agreed to give the dog back to her. Some people are just rotten, although maybe she is concerned about the dog if she knows the guy was not feeding her enough. How did she even know you had the dog and that she was underweight? (Hmmm… too many female pronouns, gets confusing 😆 ) I suspect the guy you bought the dog from is the one getting off the hook here…

Well, after her being very verbal I hung up on her. She said he is in trouble because he signed the contract and I am in trouble because I’m refusing to return her to the lady. She IS rotten 🙁 Anyhow I called the vet for copies of her previous records and apparantly this guy had called the lady he got the dog from and wanted his money back and to return her- the lady said you can return her but I’m not giving your money back. So the guy told her he was tying the dog to a tree because he wanted to golf more often (umm this is just he said she said seems weird to me too!) What he had told me is that his wife didn’t like the dog and she was too hyper is why he was looking for a new home. Anyhow the vet knew this dog was on a contract and when I called they obviously found out he had gave the dog away so they called the lady and told her that the guy had indeed gotten rid of the dog which led her to calling me. Did that all make sense? And she said the vet had noted that she was skinny (which if that was HIS vet what would it have to do with me anyhow obviously he made her skinny not me I’ve only had her about a month). Anyhow I don’t even know if that all made sense. But I guess she can sue him for monetary/money because of the broken contract and she can sue me to get a court order to return the dog to her. I just hate not knowing- every day that goes by I get more attached to the dog I mean what if she waits 6 months and then sues then it’s going to really suck to have her ordered to be given back. I’m really at a loss. I thought about just giving her to the lady but not only do I not want to because I like the dog but because she would go into a kennel/cage like the 75+ other dogs on her property I don’t want that for her life! Sigh. I don’t know I guess it’s just a wait and see game at this point. Sorry this was so long
April 30, 2008 at 4:00 pm #694279Wow. Well I am glad the officer didn’t see any reason to take your dog away, and I hope you don’t get sued! Also, if she has 300+ dogs, isn’t that considered hoarding? There are laws against having so many pets-I assume.
April 30, 2008 at 4:02 pm #694280I’m not sure but if he signed a contract to give the dog back if he didn’t want it then I think that lady can take you to court to get the dog back. I think thats the same thing that happened with Ellen Degeneras’s (can’t spell her name)dog. She adopted it gave it to a friend because she didn’t want it so the agency she adopted it from took the dog back. There was a big stink about it on the tv.
April 30, 2008 at 4:03 pm #694281April 30, 2008 at 4:15 pm #694282Is the lady running a “rescue”? Can you talk to her and ask to adopt the dog? Let her know you didn’t know about the contract with the previous guy and you want to do the right thing, but the dog is happy and getting healthy and would really like to keep the dog.
