I think the second highest bidder was legit, yes. It’s just a matter of finding out who they are. 🙂
I don’t get it; can’t they be contacted through ebay?
When ebay pulled the auction, it pulled the list of bidders with it, so Windstone has no idea who actually bid on the piece.
February 27, 2008 at 8:07 pm #669584Yes, all traces of all parts of the auction gets pulled. The only thing that is helping us this time is that I took screenshots right before eBay nuked the auction.

My art: featherdust.comFebruary 27, 2008 at 8:13 pm #669585When Ebay does that do they refund you your list price? I was also wondering if they don’t give you the auction info in an attempt to make you re-list it instead of offering to the next highest bidder? It’s kind of underhanded to not provide you with the list of bidders if you paid to have the auction listed.

Sun Dragon Koi #3February 28, 2008 at 12:00 am #669586EBay totally nukes the auction. It’s as if it never existed, and the fees are never charged to your account.
It really does bite, but I know why they do it. My husband and I were trying to figure out why eBay won’t even give the seller a bidder list to sell to the second highest bidder. My family got into a debate over why they’d do this and we think we figured it out.Consider this scenario.. (purely hypothetical, but with the amount of business on eBay I can totally see it happening)
Business A or even Person A does a lot of sales on eBay. Perhaps it is their main source of profit. They sell items that tend to go for a high amount, like cars or perhaps mountain bikes… whatever it is, it is items that tend to go over $800.
Let’s say that person A is shady. They want their item to go for as high as possible. They could have a friend shill bid (bidding without intent to buy just to drive the price up) but there is always the risk that the friend will win the item, as it is a legit eBay account bidding.
So, person A says, hey, there are about 5453487 script kiddies online that can hack eBay IDs easily (most of the time though spoof emails). So they or a hacker friend hacks a random eBay account, and bids an outrageous amount on their auction, perhaps $50,000 on an item they only expect to sell for %5,000. To make it look as if it were random, perhaps they use the random hacked account to bid on a bunch of other high dollar items at the same time. So, other people that actually want the item for real are bidding and they think they are in a bidding war with a real person. If the hacker hadn’t bid, and a real buyer entered a bid of say $10,000 but it only gets bid up to $5,000, the winner would only pay the $5,000. But since the hacker’s highest bid was so high it ups everyone’s bid to their max amount. So now eBay comes along and says oops, that bidder was fake! Hacked account! Sorry, this auction is invalid. What if they let the seller sell to the second highest bidder? Then the seller would be sure to get the max amount out of the auction. The only way eBay can avoid this problem is to pull the auction like it never existed.
This is a very very real problem, because I don’t see a real solution.

My art: featherdust.comFebruary 28, 2008 at 12:15 am #669587Well, that makes sense. As long as they aren’t making you pay the list fee it is at least mostly fair. It is annoying though because the real winner will have to go through the auction all over again and might not win the second time. Or maybe they won’t be available to participate. I think I’d at least like the chance to decide, but I suppose that is why Windstone offers the second chance to the runner up. I hope it works out okay for you.

Sun Dragon Koi #3February 28, 2008 at 8:46 am #669588So Nam, if you don’t find out who the second highest bidder was, will the Keeper be relisted?
February 28, 2008 at 1:07 pm #669589That’s very frustrating. All that time lost while the auction was going on, when the Keeper could already be on her way to her new home. 🙄
February 28, 2008 at 2:38 pm #669590Yeah, really. It also delays windstone and Jen from getting paid. I dont know about you, but I get cranky when my pay is late. 😛
February 28, 2008 at 4:13 pm #669591I’ve been told that John was able to sell the keeper, I believe to the second highest bidder. I don’t know any more than that. So I guess it found a home!

February 29, 2008 at 10:10 am #669595Oh good, I’m glad the Keeper found a home. I hope the lucky owner comes out of hiding so we can see pics!
