Regular production things also need to look good on physical store shelves and be a color that “average”* people are inclined to purchase. Their main business for normal production colors are in dealers / retail shops (what few are left).
The color needs to look really good on each of the entire line of (dragons / griffins / whatever) because stores often like to carry the whole line. Or, at least, they used to.
It needs to be simple enough to paint manymany pieces, and simple enough for more than one person to learn how to paint it.* By average I mean non-Windstone fanatics like us! XD

My art: featherdust.comMarch 4, 2011 at 2:57 pm #837499I am not feeling the penguin griffin. I do want to see what the babies look like! Are they grey and black like penguin chicks? or are they colored like the adults?
March 4, 2011 at 3:31 pm #837500I have a few theories about what looks ‘good’ on griffin sculpts and what doesn’t, but it’s mostly just “BS” and these are fantasy critters anyhow! XD
Mostly it comes down to shape and feather type, I think. Because windstone griffins have big fluffy feathers in relatively small numbers (compared to a real bird) and a short haired rump, colorations that exist on birds with tiny, hair-life feathers don’t translate as well. When you bisect a large feather to create a pattern it can look ‘unnatural’ because on the real bird the pattern would be created by manymany small or even tiny feathers. Bisecting a large feather creates a stenciled look sometimes. This theory is what can make a patterned dragon look too ‘busy’ to some of us, as well.

My art: featherdust.comMarch 4, 2011 at 4:23 pm #837501I can’t believe Melody did penguin griffins! When the pyos first came out I wanted to paint a penguin griffin. I bought a book on penguins, a Pyo griffin and paint but then got intimidated and never did it. I kept meaning to commission someone but there was always another Windstone to get so never did. I love penguins and always thought they would make great griffins. I am so glad to see Melody painted a momma. She is lovely.

March 5, 2011 at 5:26 am #837512That’s how baby penguins look when they first hatch. They don’t look like the adults until they grow up a bit
